To sleep Perchance to dream in blurred reality or 20-20 vision, incongruous maze or encyclopedic order; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. War ' s nightmare, bloodthirsty battles and agonized courage, Endured, ' til dawn ' s early light Found America reborn. To rest in peace. ] i To rest, but not to sleep And yet to dream . . .awake. I Old men saw visions of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Young men dream dreams of cancer cures, equal rights, and two-car garages. 12 i Sometimes our dreams elude the shore In waves of restless reach. But when God in timeless stretch takes heart-hold of humanity, We reach the shore As co-dreamers And find Cod-shaped reality. 13 Now glory be to God who by His mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever ask or even dream ... Ephesians3:20T.L.B, . ' ' -. i In the solitude of our minds We can look to the future. For we know what we are But not what we may be. IN DEDICATION TO DR. CAROLYN ROHE FAYE RILEY ESTHER SALZAAAN 53 MMWHM  f STUDENT LIFE 55 Mr 56 ACTIVITIES 57 nauguration Of Dr. Parrott i •• n February 1 0, 1 976, Dr. Leslie rarron was ror- mally inaugurated as president of Olivet Nazarene College. Dr. Manning M. Patillo, Jr., president of Ogle- thorpe University, was principle speaker for this occa- sion. Over 70 American and Canadian colleges and universities were represented to honor the educational tradition of Olivet and her president. The faculty partic- ipated in a processional and were dressed in academic robes. The formal inaugural ceremony is an Olivet tradition designed to involve the education community in the installment of a new president. i Ollies Follies Early this fall, students were to be seen in the fields and in the streets. The Olivet stu- dents were ready for a full day of class com- petition. There was no mistake that the stu- dents would become better acquainted by the end of the day, through the many activities involved. Among those activities were the obstacle course, the tug-of-war, the human pyramid competition, the seed-spitting contest, the wheelbarrow race, and the balloon toss. A new competition added this year was the gro- cery cart race. At the end of the day, the students gath- ered at Ludwig. Each class presented skits and entertainment as the last part of the com- petition. 62 dll 63 Bloodmobile As another addition to their traditional activities. Circle K housed in Chalfant Hall a charita- ble activity. Emily Dickinson cap- tured the emotions of Olivetians as they gave blood in the latter portion of October. If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching. Or cool one pain. Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain! — Emily Dickinson 64 65 66 Red Carpet Day Floods of high school students poured into the Olivet campus on October 9 and 1 for the annual Red Carpet Day. The future Olivetians were oriented to student life by the variety of planned events. On Thursday night, a nnusical hap- pening took place at Ludwig Center featur- ing the Treble Clef Choir, Vikings Male Chorus and concluding with the Treble Tone Trio and the Churchmen Quartet. There were planetarium showings for the 1,000 high school juniors and seniors and on Friday, a special chapel was given at College Church with Dr. Parrott, the speaker, and the Orpheus choir. Red Carpet Day activities ended suc- cessfully on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and the ebb of students returned to normal. 67 68 Truth Truth, a musical group consisting of singers and musicians, came to share their message about Jesus Christ to the students of Olivet. The songs they sang were brought alive by the v arm, glowing faces. Sponsored by the Viking Male Chorus, they performed in Chalfant Hall on October 24, with a strong student response represented by a standing ovation. 69 70 Neilson-Young Recitals This year Olivet students were pre- sented two classical concerts sponsored by the nnusic department. The first of the two featured artist-in-residence, Stephen Neil- son and guest artist Won-Mo Kinn, and the second, Mr. Neilson and Ovid Young. The first concert featured sonatas for piano and violin that were skillfully and beautifully perfornned. The second concert featured nnusic for duo-pianos which was totally captivating to the listeners. Both showed the creativity and expertise of the performers, and were a delight to the audience. 71 72 Fall Concerts This year Olivet students were able to enjoy three concerts dis- playing the talents of Gene Cotton, Ron Hudson, and Randy Mat- thews. Gene Cotton, who wrote most of his own music, captivated the Olivet audience with his blend of light humor and smooth, mel- low songs. Ron Hudson, a native of Latin America, poured his gui- tar and singing talents out upon attentive listeners. Randy Mat- thews, a gospel rock singer, shared hilarious true-to-life stories and played some great rock and roll for Jesus. B: 73 oween Halloween was again a scarey experience at Oli- vet. For the all-school party, the Junior Class took off their masks and revealed to all their true identi- ties; those being of nightmarish creatures. Students were conducted by bus to a secluded born where they were shown the film Wait Until Dark. After hearts started beating again the stu- dents were taken through a graveyard to the Haunted House. Between screams and gasps they were led on foot (and hands and knees) till finally they escaped through a chute. Totally confused, the students were once again escorted by ghouls onto buses and taken to another barn for refreshments in the hayloft. 75 78 i 79 80 Nurse ' s Dedication Holy Spirit, Be My Guide. As the crowd hushed, soft voices song this beauti- ful hymn. It was the night of November 7, and probably the most meaningful night of the nursing students ' year. Speeches by several students and a special guest speaker highlighted the evening. From a history of nursing heritage to serene and beautiful candle lighting, the nurses ' dedi- cation was indeed a night to remember. 81 HOMECOMING •• f 1 t k iC-tL ..rl I «  rir '  4 ii i 1 m QUEEN CAROLYN SCHRADER JULIE DIXON KATHYWICHTERMAN 86 Homecoming Parade In the Spirit for ' 76 was the theme of the 1975 Homecoming Parade. Beginning on Schuyler in uptown Kankakee, all units began their trek at ten o ' clock Saturday morning. Included in the colorful parade were clowns, the freshman marching unit, floats, and an array of Olivitian celebri- ties. The floats in the parade were judged the Friday before and the delightful win- ners were: Clubs — International Stu- dents, Class — Sophomores, and the Grand Prize — The Senior Class. After the parade, a long string of tired feet and ach- ing muscles were seen slowly moving back to their dorms, with a sense of pride and accomplishment. 87 { ,w . w li Homecoming Play With Homecoming, came the fall play performed by Olivet students and pre- sented in Reed Auditorium. When Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cor- neallia Otis Skinner was a delightful, humorous play, involving the antics and mishaps of two young girls on their first ocean voyage. Leading roles were played by Nancy Kendall and Bonnie Greene. The play introduced a great deal of talent and enjoyment, noteworthy of Olivet students. 89 90 Fall Reviva The fall revival was a time of soul searching and of spiritual growth. The entire campus was touched by the mes- sages given by evangelist Chuck Milhuff and song evangelist Jim Bohi. The services, both at college church and chapel, included a spirit of unity which aided in the revival ' s success. Faculty, dorm, and pri- vate prayer meetings, which were con- ducted throughout the campus, were another tool which made the revival effec- tive. One goal of Olivet is that of aiding stu- dents in personal spiritual growth, and the fall revival accomplished this purpose. 91 -. Ji COLLEGE CHURCH With its colonial design suggesting the strength of the ideals that were the cornerstone of o new nation 200 years ago, the pulpit of College Church reaffirms the love, grace, and purpose of God during this Bicentennial year. The warnn fellowship, the open altar, and the emp°hasis upon the Word pro- vides spiritual dimension and support for student and faculty member, and a dynamic voice in the community. Pastor Bill Draper, his staff, and lay leaders seek new avenues of ministry to more effectively tell the ageless message of Jesus Christ. Hand in hand with Olivet, the church contributes to the develop- ment of men and women who will provide leadership for the church and the nation as we embark upon the unchartered waters of our next century of existence. ■sa!.r« , ' ; ■1 y S8H 1 l-.f 9 B _J£__ ; « It 1 W ■■■M J ' M i ,: 4. . It all started with everyone uniting together in the theme of sharing love, peace, and good will to fellow students in the hectic time of studying for finals. To start the evening of peace and relaxation. Social Committee, under the direction of Stan Zurcher, provided an atmosphere of painted murals, stage scenery, and the fresh scent of pine trees, while SAGA prepared a bountiful meal. Aptly directed by Tammy Sarver, Steve Williamson, and Bruce Brian was the humorous Legend of Nick the Saint as was told in the play A Three Penney Christmas. Following much laughter and applause given to the actors, actresses, directors, and dog was the presentation of gifts to the Parrott family and dedication to Dr. Rose Burckhardt. Wrapping it all up in a closing message by Rev. Ron Pelton was the challenge to his listeners to find the true spirit of sharing Christmas. In doing so, they brought to Olivet the first conference title in the nev confer- ence (NIIC). Olivet placed three golfers on the all-conference team. Dennis Banks was conference medalist, v hile Steve William- son and Rick Watkins also made the team. Steve Williamson was the only senior on the team, therefore Coach Ward will have the majority of his golfers returning. 180 Golf Team Conference Champions Sieve Williamson, Dennis Bonks, Jim Miller, Rick Watkins, Greg Girard (not pictured). Cross Country Olivet ' s long distance runners compiled a fine season record of 9-6 in their first year in the NIIC. They were led by juniors Dave Leatherman and Kent Lamb who combined for ten first place finishes between them. Leatherman and Lamb fin- ished 8th and 12th, respectively, in the NCCAA nationals, with their best time for five miles at 26:42. They were followed strongly by four freshmen. Steve Latham and Jim Bacon ran 3rd and 4th with Gene Christy and Mike Long rounding out the team. 182 ' X,i R; ' ' i - ' mm r ' Bj ' J. Bacon, M. Long, S. Latham, G. Christy, K. Coach Larry Watson kept the guys hustling and took second place in the Hunt- ington tournament with five Tigers in the finals. Tom Allen and Dave Veanes took first place in the Olivet Invitational as the Tigers placed fourth. At the NCCAA tournament in Pennsylvania, the Olivet wrestlers placed third among nineteen teams. Olivet ' s running basketball team contin- ued their winning tradition as they finished their regular season play with a fine 20-6 record. As a new member of the NIIC, they made their presence felt as they won over each of the opposing teams at least once. Coach Ward ' s Tigers compiled a 10-2 con- ference record, which gave them an undis- puted second place finish, one game out of first. The basketballers also fared well in invi- tational tournaments as they captured three first place titles in their three attempts. The 1 975-76 Tigers were led by seniors Ted Allen and Jim Shoff, who provided the playmaking and much of the scoring. Ted held the team together through the rough spots while scoring 1 5.6 points per game. In the finest effort, he broke the school sin- gle game scoring record with a 42 point outburst against Judson College. Ted was one of the most exciting players Olivet has ever had with his quickness and shot- blocking ability. Jim Shoff, in his last year as a Tiger, compiled the highest scoring average in Olivet history, connecting on 24.1 points per game. At 6-2 he was the second lead- ing rebounder. He will be hard to replace. But Coach Ward had several other steady performers, most notably in the forms of three sophomores. Gerald Stea- goll (10.4) in his second year and Sam Harris (1 3.1 ) both showed they could score and handle the ball. Denny Followell (8.1) led the team in rebounds with 247 for the season, a 9.5 average. Also showing promise was the play of Odell Berry (4.9), Dave Brotheridge (4.4), Dave Plunkett (5.2), Steve Harris, Dave Skelton, and Ron McLean. Coach Word has a right to be proud of the way his team has performed. In his last year as head basketball coach, he again came up with a powerful team and a very successful season. He has started a win- ning tradition at Olivet and in Birchard Gymnasium. ONC OPP.
