Strickler Faculty Advisor Jrtecwtct This publication is presented as a symbol of the motto of Olivet Nazarene College, Edu- cation with a Christian Purpose. It is at Olivet a student is taught that edu- cation, based on Christian principles, will help the individual in his continuous reconstruction and readjustment of experience; that under- standing, appreciation and participating in the fruitful Christian way of living will lead to a balanced, normal and effective life. In these pages it can be seen that the product of Christian education, basically grounded as he is in Christ, will be equipped to serve the needy world of this day. Edward Behr Under the competent direction of President Edward Behr, the Council of Associated Students has constantly endeavored to co- ordinate the desires of the student body and the administration of Olivet. The highlight of the year ' s activity was the dedication of the beautiful Student Union Room. It is here the campus organizations and students may exercise their various functions. Many other activities and improvements, such as laying plans for the construc- tion of new roads on campus, have been sponsored by this year ' s Council. Officers for the year were: Edward Behr, president; Robert Knuth, secretary; and Wilmer Watson, treasurer. Dr. Willis Snow- barger was chosen as faculty sponsor for the year. Page 7 li dOUuet a time ta be Parties and afternoon teas in the parlors enable one to get acquainted with almost every student on campus. We are indeed fortunate to have access to the social advantages which have been provided for us at Olivet, for it is while participating in such events that we learn how to derive beauty from life. Page 8 It is necessary for the student to have a home while in college. This is an important function of comfortable, modern dormitory rooms. Also, it is while relaxing in these rooms that lasting friendships are begun, the news of the day discussed, and lessons prepared for another day. Page 9 Breadth of vision and a love for the lost are natural outgrowths of spiritual emphasis by the college religious groups. Page 22 Forty years ago there was a small struggling school in Olivet, Illinois, which was offered to the Church of the Nazarene. This proffered gift, Illinois Holiness University, was received by the Church of the Nazarene in 1912. In 1940 this College was moved to Kankakee, Illinois. This, in brief, is the history of Olivet Nazarene College. Forty years have gone by, and forty years of service have been rendered to the Church of the Nazarene and to the entire world. Forty years of Educa- tion With a Christian Purpose have given to the cause of Jesus Christ scores of pastors, evangelists, musicians, missionaries, and Christian workers. Forty years have added to the Alumni membership until it now totals two thousand ' men and women in places of leadership in the professions, in the home, and in business; and other thousands have received training within Olivet ' s portals and likewise are serving with distinction. Forty years of progress! Forty years of Christian service! Forty years of spiritual leadership! Forty years of glorious achievement! And, now, the God who has led Olivet through these forty years, points to the future years. Thus, Olivet turns to a new point of beginning with a clear vision of her task. With faith, hope, and love she proposes to give the youth of the Church of the Nazarene, more fully than ever before, Education With a Christian Purpose. Harold W. Reed, President DR. AND MRS. The student body is high in the interests of the College Church; its pastor offering full-time counselling service, its choirs utilizing the students, and its organizations student-led wherever possible. Students find places of service in the Sunday school, in the various youth groups, and in the proper missionary society chapters. Two Christian Service Training Classes are organized each year, with courses especially fitted for the college students. The College Church definitely favors Christian education, and gears with the College in promoting it at Olivet. Page 123 DR. SAMUEL YOUNG General Superintendent Church of the Nazarene The fall revival, with General Superintend- ent Young preaching and Professor Gerald Greenlee singing, was witnessed bv many who were both encouraged and shown the way to profitable Christian living. Dr. Young ' s deep insight of the spiritual problems con- fronting the present day college student, and the timely advice given in his sermons, raised him in the esteem of all Olivetians. 4M24Vqelu£i With Reverend Lyle Eckley preaching, and Reverend Murray L. Morford singing, the student body was greatly blessed and encouraged during the spring revival. Some 150 seniors witnessed it as their last revival while college students. Many students hurried to an altar of prayer as a result of the con- victing messages of Reverend Eckley and found Christ as their personal Savior. It seemed that all in attendance were uplifted by the ministry of these two men of God. REV. L. E. ECKLEY District Superintendent Northwest Illinois District Pace 124 -flrdQ. Page 125 Page 126 ■ H The power of a Ministry in Music has long been recognized as a useful tool in the presentation of the Gospel. Our Orpheus Choir, under the direction of Professor Walter B. Larsen, endeavors to utilize this power to the fullest extent, ministering through music in concert, chapel, and church services. The Orpheus Choir made thirteen appearances in Indiana, Ohio and Michi- gan during its nineteenth concert season. The program included works by Bach, Wood, Clokey, Griswold, Thomas Weelkes, and Eric Delamarter. Upon occasion it brightened the chapel service with prelude and accompaniment to the singing. It broke the peace of the evening in welcome to the motorcades and proved most popular at the society basketball games. A notable feature of the season was the presentation of concerts and school music assemblies at many of our local area high schools. Programs featured out- standing instrumentalists in solo and ensemble. Officers for the year included William Leggee, president; Paul Newby, vice- president; Rose Ann McAllister, secretary-treasurer; and Glenna Nance, chief librarian. Page 130 The Olivet Symphony Orchestra has, over a period of years, assumed an increasingly important role in the musical life of the campus. With Professor Walter B. Larsen, conductor, and Miss Jewell Flaugher, concertmaster, the orchestra has attained a high degree of musical efficiency. The forty-five mem- bers of the symphony, while enriching the cultural life of the college community, also received invaluable ensemble experience. Highlights of the 1951-52 season included periodic appearances in the Sun- day evening services of the College Church, a concert in Chapel, and assisting the combined college choirs in the presentation of the Messiah. Spa rtan Football The Spartans eliminated a three-way tie possibility by trouncing the Trojans in the final game, thus they cinched the gridiron championship. Loaded with line-power as well as speedy backs, the George Fowler-coached eleven was easily the champion, despite single losses to each of the other societies. Page 188 Line: C. Baker, R. Hendley, O. However, victories over both the Trojans and Spartans netted them the runnerup spot with a 3-3 mark. Coach Don Bell was the league ' s top scorer with seven touchdowns. Page 189 Line: T. Pauley, D. However, from here the men in blue fell to the bottom of the heap with a 2-4 mark. Their lack of depth in talent and material was overshadowed by the determination instilled in them by coaches Butch Ward and Cal Johnson. - Page 190 1 Mi Football All-Stars BOB SCHAFER H. B.
