Her vital Christian experience, her high appreciation of fine music, her staunch adherence to scholastic prin- ciples have been a constant inspiration for better living to the students of Olivet. In appreciation of her years of unselfish service, her sincere devo- tion to the church and college, her words of encouragement and her friendship- we dedicate the 1950 Aurora to- Dr. Ella Leona Gale [10]  m ' to those we left behind Dr. Roy V. Starr, for over twenty-five years a loya l and active trustee of Olivet Nazarene College, met death suddenly one morning. His home-going brought grief to our hearts, and as the days pass by we miss his cheery greeting and his wise counsel. But when we pause to reflect we remember the words of the Master he so faithfully served, And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. Then we know his face was Ufted to Eternity and that he went forth with calm, untroubled eyes. [12] Lord, when Thou seest that my work is done. Let me not linger on With failing powers, Adown the weary hours,— A workless worker in a world of work. But, with a word. Just bid me home And I will come Right gladly,— Yea, right gladly Will I come. J. O. Margaret Jean Barsalou When on my day the evening shadows fall, I will go down to where a quiet river flows Into a sea from whence no man returns; And there embarks for lands where life immortal grows. She passed away, like morning dew. Before the sun was high; So brief her time, she scarcely knew The meaning of a sigh. Love was her guardian Angel here. But love to death resigned her Tho ' love was kind, why should we fear. But holy death is kinder? H. C. ViRGiE Hall Kyle [13] The Board of Trustees Olivet Nazarene College is genuinely proud of the men who serve so wholeheartedlv the cause of Christ and this institution. To these men we pledge a like devotion and thereby honor their sacrifices for us. I CENTRAL OHIO Dr. Harvey S. Galloway Rev. Miles Simmons Rev. H. C. Litle CHICAGO CENTRAL Dr. E. O. Chalfant Dr. C. Edwin Harwood RELIGION MUSIC ATHLETICS COUNCILING OUR PRESIDENT OUR TASK Olivet Nazarene College is today the largest insti- tution of learning in the Church of the Nazarene. Be- cause of that fact, in a certain sense, it must set the pattern for the entire denomination. It must chart the course in adjusting a campus of twelve hundred stu- dents to the ideals and vision of our beloved church. Olivet is not only a Liberal Arts College, it is a Holiness College. Education with a Christian Pur- pose is its motto and it sets forth the clear-cut func- tion which it performs. The centrality and essentiality of its Christian purpose is constantly kept in mind by the Administration, Faculty, Board of Trustees and Student Body. Our institutional goals recognize that our college is an institution of the Church of the Nazarene. While students of twenty denominations and more are in attendance this year, the college underscores as of paramount importance the fundamental beliefs, prin- ciples, and emphasis of the Church of the Nazarene. The college seeks to provide a well rounded Liberal Arts education in an atmosphere of Christian culture. The Liberal Arts enrollment continues to grow. As an illustration of that point, our graduating class this year is tlie largest in the history of the college. Olivet Nazarene College nuist continue its clear vision of its primary responsibility to God, the Church and Nazarene Youth. It must seek first the Kingdom of Cod, knowing tliat all material, cultural, and spiritual blessings will be added in the Will of God to our esteemed college. HAROLD W. Clubs and Organizations The Student Council A spirited political campaign last Spring cul- minated in the election of Richard Jones as Student Body President and Charles Perry, Treasurer for 1949-50. For its Secretary the Counsel selected one of its representatives, John Handschy. Dr. J. Russell Gardner was appointed Faculty Representative by Dr. Reed. The ten student representatives on the twelve- man Council are elected by their respective aca- demic groups: one each from the freshman and sophomore classes, and two each from the junior and senior classes, the Bible School and the High School. Under the resolute leadership of President Jones, the Student Council has striven to enhance the stat- ure of Olivet ' s student government, initiating a thor- ough revision of the Student Body Constitution, de- signed to make it more adequate for the needs of the enlarged student body. In fulfilling its function of haison between students and Administration, the Council has maintained as its ideal the acceptance of the Bible standard of Christian living by every student. Notable among this year ' s Student Council proj- ects are the new recreation faciHties on the campus. STUDENT COUNCIL Left to right: Seated: J. Handschy, R. Jones, C. Perry, Dr. Gardner. Harris Debate Teams The Department of Speech offers work leading to the Bachelor of Arts de- gree in Speech. The fields of instruction are Interpretation, Public Speaking, Speech Science and Radio. Many of the courses are designed for teachers of speech and others professionally engaged in the ministry, in radio, as teachers in speech clinics and on the public plat- form. The Debate squads, under the direc- tion of Prof. George C. Moore had a very profitable year. Participating in several tournaments, the Olivet teams came out well in competition with lead- ing colleges and universities of the mid- dle western states. The question this year was, RESOLVED: That the United States Should Nationalize the Basic Non- agricultural Industries. A trip to Peoria, Illinois, in November to the Bradley Invitational Speech Meet netted a world victory. However, Charles Scott came through with an award of Excellent in Extempore Speak- ing and Radio Newscasting and Bill Mor- rison as award of Excellent in Radio Newscasting. Most of the members of the debate class were privileged to participate in a practice Purdue Novice Invitational Meet, at Purdue University. The keenest competition was experi- enced at the Sixth Annual Speech Meet at the State Teachers College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In this event thirty- five colleges and universities were en- tered, with a total of eighty-five teams. Eldon Cornett and Gene Harris rated an Excellent in debate; Don Winne and Jim Leach deserve honorable mention for they lacked only one point rating Ex- cellent in debate; Jim Leach rated an Ex- cellent in After Dinner Speaking and Fred McGraw rated a Superior in Folk- tale Telling. J. Leach D. Winne I W. 0. N. C. Radio The demand for competently trained Christian radio work- ers increases and with it the opportunity for young men and women to serve the church through the medium of radio. Real- izing this fact, radio at Olivet was organized several years ago. This year it was voted by the Board of Trustees to merge the radio department and station WONG into the Department of Speech. Courses in radio include an introduction to broadcasting methods and programs, continuity writing, program planning, radio announcing, news reporting and laboratory courses for writing and production of actual radio programs. Completely modern in design and equipment, WONC radio facilities comprise a large sound-proof studio with adjacent control room and recording room, a music library and offices for the staff of the Department of Speech. Use of non-professional talent is one of the key elements of the college broadcasting service. Working as a part of the Department of Speech and with close cooperation with the Di- vision of Music, WONC makes it possible for ministers, teachers, and Christian workers and others to gain studio experience un- der professional direction and for campus listeners to hear prom- ising artists in both music and speech. Students are selected from radio speech classes and auditions are held for students who are interested in participating in broadcasts. LIBRARY iss Slemmer m- ■ ;, 9.m I ;| .T4Kr One of the most distinctive honors that can come to a college stu- dent is election to Who ' s Who Among Students in American Uni- versities and Colleges, a nationally recognized organization. A com- bination of qualities of character, academic accomplishments, partici- pation in extra-curricular activities and capability for service in the world of tomorrow are the standards by which students are selected. Each year the organization publishes a book which includes the biog- raphy of each student-elect and which acts to supply information to personnel managers concerning capable college graduates. A certifi- cate of recognition is sent to each individual and he is privileged to wear the official Who ' s Who Key which is a symbol of the most out- standing achievements in college. r 143 ] I Who ' s RICHARD JONES Danville, Illinois . . . Pastor of the College Church THE COLLEGE CHURCH- right on the campus in location, and right down to earth in understand- ing, helpful ministry— is dedicated to the spiritual task of serving Oli- vet. For hundreds of Olivetians the COLLEGE CHURCH serves as more than a convenience for those days when there is no other place to go; for them the COLLEGE CHURCH provides a preaching ministry geared to their present problems and needs and life de- mands and a service and guidance and atmosphere that are valuable all the time. Seekers find spiritual help at the altar week after week. THE COLLEGE CHURCH of- fers a counseling ministry through the pastor, a guidance service uti- lized by multitudes of the students that covers the range of problems facing youth today, a service that occupies the pastor day after day. This ministry brings the student close to the pastor at the time when he is in greatest need of experi- enced, understanding counsel. The pastor ' s office is strategically situ- ated at the center of student traffic, where the pastor can come to the heart of student need. This min- istry is one of the most valuable services provided the students by the COLLEGE CHURCH. THE COLLEGE CHURCH pre- sents many different outlets for service, for learning, for experi- ence, for leadership, for practice. Through our choir, our special mu- sic, our Junior Church, our Chil- dren ' s Club, our Sunday school de- partments and classes, our differ- ent youth groups, our missionary chapters, our Christian Service Training classes, our altar services: through these many avenues we use our college group, we train our col- lege group, we develop our college group, we teach our college group. THE COLLEGE CHURCH is carrying out its declared dedication with earnestness and responsibility: it is the campus church serving Olivet. The Melody Men WALTER HUBBARD DANNY LIDDELL LON WOODRUM DR. D. [184] Worship the Lord in the beauty of Holiness: ' (Psalm 29:2). This verse describes the motivation and stimulation that brings together each evening from 6:15 to 7:00 in the Student Prayer Chapel a group of de- vout, spiritually-minded students. Testimonies are clear-cut, and the prayers are filled with heart cries and desires. Times of spiritual refreshing are frequently enjoyed around the altar as definite victories are won. The music is of the finest quality and quantity, controlled by the Holy Spirit. A cross-section of the men and women from our whole educational zone joins the songs of Zion and keeps the spirit of the church at its rightful level. From this group will come the lead- ers of our church of tomorrow. Inter- weaving their spiritual fiber with their educational fiber, they will go forth to picture and proclaim Christ and Holi- ness to a lost and dying world. Student Prayer and Praise Band Student Missionary Band Here am I . . . send me. The objective of the Student Missionary Band is to sponsor the cause of missions and maintain ahve our missionary zeal. During the school year meetings were held every two weeks, Sat- urday evening and Sunday afternoon, alternately. The Band sponsored the Missionary Lecture Series held in November by the Reverend Roger Winans, missionary to the Aguaruna Indians of Peru. Outside speakers and an authority on missions were invited for Chapel pro- grams. Among these were Dr. Howard Hamlin, the Reverend WilHam Eckels, the Reverend Pattee, Ricardo Fernandez and Professor R. L. Lunsford, our sponsor. The officers for the year are: Ardee B. The following officers served for the year: George Psaute, President; Leonard Hubartt, Vice-president; Mary Faith Coolidge, Secretary; James Rhinebarger, Treasurer; Danny Liddell and Walter Hubbard, Ministers of Music. The following projects were carried out during the year: 1. Providing chapel services with both outside and student speakers. 2. Beginning a new Sunday School in East Bradley. East Bradley is a vast and needy field without one church, and through a survey carried out by students, ninety-four people were found for the new Sunday School. The entire student body is in cooperation with this project and showed their evangelistic spirit by giving several hundred dollars to this work. At the Annual Spring Banquet Dr. V. Mr. Lauf, through his untiring effort and thorough musicianship, has brought the band ' s performance to its present high level. The Band has played for many athletic events in the gymnasium, given chapel programs, and presented several concerts. [ 200 ] Now in its third year, the OUvet Sym- phony Orchestra, numbering thirty-five in personnel, this year contributed much to the musical enjoyment of the students. Under the able baton of Professor Don Hustad, the orchestra has made rapid strides musically. Two concerts were presented in the col- lege chapel, the first of which included selections by Beethoven, Haydn, Morton Gould and Johann Strauss, Jr. Soloist for the first concert was J. Maurice Dobbins, violinist, of Wheaton College. In the sec- ond of these concerts Jack Fowler, Olivet student and member of the orchestra, was presented as violin soloist. The orchestra delighted its audience with compositions of Smetana, Bizet, Grieg, Gliere and a modern number by Leroy Anderson. Olivet Symphony Orchestra The Commencement Concert, given in the Kankakee High School Auditorium, was the highlight of the year for the or- ganization. Soloists were members of the graduating class and included Elda Feath- erston and Geneva Holstein, pianists; Helen Basham, soprano; Willis Baldridge, Daniel Liddell and Joe Worley, tenors, vocalists. Gale Organ Guild The Gale Organ Guild was organized in the Fall of 1947 to ad- vance the cause of worthy church music, to elevate the status of church organists, and to increase their appreciation of their opportunities as conductors of worship. Its sponsor. Miss Ella Leona Gale, is a member of the A. A. G. O., and is this year celebrating her Golden Anniversary, having played in church services for the past fifty years. Throughout the school year the Gale Organ Guild is active in sponsoring organ recitals, vesper services and trips to the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in Chicago. Some meetings are given to lectures on liturgical and non-liturgical church music. Officers for the year are: Willard Basham, President; Betty Bron- son, Vice-President; Dorothy Ellwanger, Secretary; Bob Edwards, Treasurer. [204] ■— Music Educator ' s Club The reorganization of the OHvet Chapter of the Music Educators National Conference was delayed during the first semester because of faculty changes; however, by second semester the Music Club was again in full swing under the capable sponsorship of Professor Sheldon Fardig. The first meeting featured a film, Youth Builds a a Symphony, and the group elected officers as follows: Curtis Brady, President; Arlene Millspaugh, Vice-president; Margaret Albert, Secre- tary-Treasurer; Ruth Psaute, Program Chairman. Programs for the rest of the year included professional papers on various phases of public school teaching and interesting talks from teachers in the Kankakee area. Left to right: Seated: R. He lost only one game in the three previous years. Jerry Green filled in and won three games. The Indians lacked hitting as Beatty was the only one to hit over .300. A youth program was installed for the Redmen as Coach Clendenen tried out at least nine freshman players in winning 3 games while losing 5. Linders, Havener and Alderson were outstanding rookies. [211] Spartan Softball Don Durick helped the Spartan team in placing sec- ond to the Trojans. He won his last three games. The lack of hitting made the Spartans come short of the championship. John Jones, Barrel Leitsch, and Leroy Hankins were the main men on defense and at the bat. Left to right: First Row: D. Leitsch, K. Tremain. Second Row: H. Smith, L. Hankins, G. Wells, L. Sparks, P. Trojan Softball With six of their players hitting .300 or over and a pitcher who is tops, the Trojan men came through with the softball championship. John Bundy hit a tremendous .722, Laymon .544, and Hess hit .454 to lead the whole league at bat. Eddie Sirrine was tough to beat as he pitched one no-hit, no-run game and was stingy with hits the whole season. Jack Nash and Tom Pauley were outstanding defense men in the outfield as Johnson was on the infield. Indian Softball The power-laden Indians have dominated the Softball realm for the last three years and have again come out on top of the first record of play this year with a won 4 lost 1 record. They lost good players in Donna Randolph Beatty, Lehmann and Zackmire but had wonderful replacements in L. Jonnson, Bug Hiatt, Stone, Kellar and Debruler. In Lois Johnson, the Indians have found a replacement for Mary Johnson, the Indian team for the past 4 years. Others who figured in the fine record the Indians have made are: Powers, Clester, Street, McMurrin, Enoch, Dye and Sledd. They say we will repeat. [214] Spartan Softball Although the Spartans lost good ball players in A. Harshman, Betty Brown, and June Brown Jones, they came up with some promising athletes as replacements. Coleman, Major, Hendricker and Snow proved their worth in helping the Society to a won 3 lost 3 record. J. Harshman, a great athlete, and Evans and Coomer were the back- bone of the team and with cooperation and team play should give the Indians a rough time during the spring session. Trojan Softball Because of the graduation of stellar performers and the dropping out of school of 3 other good players, the Trojan team couldn ' t do much this year other than appear for scheduled games. With Ricker, Wilson and Connie Evans gone, the Trojans had an up-hill struggle. They failed to win a game but were going all-out with available material. Wallace, Ritthaler, Hodgson and Carter were the big guns for the Tro- jans. The girls are better organized now and should do commendably in the spring session. Indian Football The Indians came out with the outstanding Uneman of the year in Paul Pusey. Losing practically all of their players from graduation, the redmen began a rebuilding program this year. Bell, Baxter, Brenneman, and Vastbinder were outstand- ing for this never-say-die team. They won 1, lost 6 and tied 1. [219] Left to right: E. Mattax, N. Shirkey, P. Coleman, H. Fleshmen, S. Wellman, O. Wilson, R. Voris, J. Schnell, D. Wellman. Spartan Football The Spartans could beat the Trojans but could not beat the down- trodden Indians consistently enough to overcome the high-flying men coached by Butch Ward. With huge Clayton Bailey, Flash Bill Zellars, shifty Pee Wee Voris, it looked to be a shoo-in for the green and white. To go with these backfield aces Don Wellman, Jess Schnell, and Chuck Perry seemed to give a strong forward wall which is needed for a championship team, but they couldn ' t seem to overcome the cham- pion Trojans. They won 4, lost 6 and tied 1. [220] Trojan Football The blue and gold outlasted the field and came away with the 1949 Football Championship. Upsetting the fa- vored Spartans, the Trojans pulled away by having the first three high scorers. Grubb, Ward, and Applegate accounted for 13 of the 18 Trojan touchdowns. With these three men in the backfield and Wright, Fox and Rose on the line, the men of Troy could not be denied. They won 6 and lost 2. Left to right: H. Powers, R. Fox, L. Wright, J. Morsch, D. Initiation started the year off with a bang as the old members broke in ' fifteen new members. The event of the year for the O Club again was Tip-Off which was probably the biggest in its his- tory.
