The individual is different from other men: he has a definite purpose in life. He wants to make his existence truly meaningful. He in- tends to make a worthwhile contribution. . . that is, what he himself considers worthwhile. He doesn’t think of his willingness to give as being a sacrifice. . .itis something he wants and has to do to fulfill his existence. He is diametrically opposed to those forces which attempt to destroy him in their frantic quest for personal glory. He dares to have values in a world which seems to have forgotten that such things still exist. He deplores dependency upon other men, . .dependency which would render him a helpless parasite. . .a being reduced to an empty hulk of nothingness, Because he believes in freedom for himself, the individual believes in freedom for all men. He dares to be himself and doesn’t fear re- jection by other men because he knows he is being true to his ideals by being himself, . . his self-respect is contingent upon his being true to himself, The individual is a rare phenomenon. . . but there are still those who deserve to be called individuals. , .and there will always be those who aren’t trying to be different just for the sake of being different, . .those who are different because they have the courage to be themselves.
