PRI CIPAL'S MESSAGE The ability to work with the group, to submerge one's own ambition to the better objectives of a class or a school, to play and work as part of the team, are skills which are becoming in- creasingly more important. Though conformity as practiced in other parts of the world may verge on slavery, the word is rich in connotations which can be most rewarding for those who properly practice it. Living in the American tradition, our great fear need not be that the mass of our people may be forced into a narrow channel of thinking or action. Rather must we guard against the worship of individual rights and powers which might be detrimental to our society as a whole. We need only look at the literature of our day, at the television of our time to detect an abuse of our basic freedoms which easily becomes dangerous license. We cannot allow freedom to enslave us, and this indeed can happen. We must instead, as individuals, accept limitations to our free- dom and to our independence when these cherished American tra- ditions become a detriment to group or national welfare or prog- ress. I write upon this theme as this year's EASTONER message be- cause I feel that these understandings have been exemplified to a high degree by the class of 1960. Composed of very fine young people, many possessing out- standing characteristics of scholarship and athletic ability, the class will, I think, be remembered not for its individual mem- bers, but for the deep and solid contribution it has made to the school. Quietly and steadily, without sensation, this class has made its contribution, our school is better for this class having been with us. I, as Principal of the Oliver Ames High School, take this oppor- tunity to express to the Class of 1960 an affection and an appreci- ation. PETER C. MCCONARTY, Principal
