To the underclassmen I hope this book will contain pleasant memories of the past year. To my classmates, the class of 1958, may these pages be a reool- lection of friends, events and in- t cidents of your high school life. A 'PAT DALY The Editor Nun t In September we entered for the first time the halls of the new Oliver Ames High School, and as seniors will be- in June the first graduating class. We left many memories from our five years in We, the class of 1958, dedicate our yearbook to Valentine lVluscato, a won- derful coach and teacher who has meant much to us during our four years at Oliver Ames. Mr. Muscato came to Oliver Ames in the fall of 1954, and has produced Winning teams in football, basketball, and track ever since. His close association with his students and the boys he coaches makes him seem more like a friend than a teacher. He has not only brought Oliver Ames winning teams and unde- feated seasons, but he has also taught us good sportsmanship by stressing that winning is not important. It is how we play the game. He instilled in the boys his 4'Burning Desire, which gave them the incentive to win. The class of 1958 is grateful to Mr. lVluscato for his interest in their activities and wishes him success and happiness in the future. 2 MATHEM ATICS AN D SCIENCE Mr. Valentine Muscato Mr. David Crehan Miss Kathryn Healy Miss Joan Molway Mr. Harold Simpson 6 0.1-i ,7s'f, . The opportunity to do it is each year most interesting, for it tends to bring into unusual focus all those happenings which have taken place since a year ago. There is sometimes a tendency for all of us to deery over our times and to refer sentimentally and happily to other eras and express the wish that we had had the chance to live in other circumstances and other times. No year could have more disproven this thinking than the one we now look back upon. The great speed with which earth-shaking events took place could only inspire in each one of us a feeling of gratitude that we have been allowed to share even as spectators in these historic times. This, then, is the message that I would send to you. That we should to the fullest enjoy and learn from this' day to day world we live in. Let us not dream idly of the past or wish hopefully for a vague and indefinite future. Let us instead enjoy and learn to the fullest in what is, perhaps, the most interesting era in the history of the world. PETER C. McCONARTY Principal - a Graduating from high school in the year 1958 should be an inspiration and a great challenge to any young American. It -has been during your present school year that we have seen one of the greatest races that Mankind has ever experienced to conquer outer space. Mere dreams and unheard of possibilities of today become the realities of tomorrow. This New Age, which we are just entering, needs people of integrity, people with ambition and people with a spirit of adventure. Many of you will decide on a college career. Some of you will enter the field of industry, the armed forces, or some other occupation. Many boys who have been in the armed services have considered this a period of education, either through study or travel. The opportunity in America today is greater for a larger number of people than it has ever been. Decide on a goal for yourself and set your sights high. Be determined, and the traits of this determination will be yours. PHILIP M. HALLOWELL Superintendent of Schools OFFICERS, left to riglil: 5:-crm-tarv. It seems as though just yesterday a class of trembling youngsters entered the halls of O.A. for the first time. They were the class of 1958, then frightened and anxious to know what the future held for them. In September of 19547, with Miss Healey as class advisor, we held our first class meeting and proudly elected Allan Bashian for class president, Peter Mahoney for vice president, Anne Taylor for secretary, and Joan Vieira for treasurer. Bob Silva became our representative to t'he student council. Our blue and gold banner displayed our class motto, nlfxperimentum Docet, meaning-experience is the best teacher. As it was to be in the coming years, we combined pleasure with our learning. Valen- tines in Swing was our first social. We entered our second year of high school with Pete Mahoney as president, Henry Baxter as vice president, Anne and Joan held their positions as secretary and treasurer. This year we received our class rings. It also was the year of our first night social 'LSoiree. Our junior year saw Pete and Henry at their positions but with Claire Williams as secretary and Carol Houde as treasurer. With the help of Mrs. Carter, our class advisor, we presented Imagination, our class social, which proved successful both socially and financially. We, along with the class of 1957, presented the Junior-Senior Prom. The class of 1957 selected ushers and usherettes for their graduation exercises. In our junior year we attempted to prove our ability as chemists. As seniors, the first class to graduate from the new school, we continued with the same class officers as the previous year with Mr. Mason as our class advisor. In the fall of 1957 we held our social, '4l..es Revesf' March 28 and 29, 1958, under the competent direction of Miss Pierson, 'cCharlie's Auntl' was presented on the stage of our new high school and was received with enthusiasm and praise. John Slavitz represented 0.A. on Good Government Day at the State House, and Claire Williams won the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award. The class of '58 has been instrumental in sports at O.A. having placed many class members on different athletic teams. The senior boys have been greatly responsible in the 4 years undefeated basketball team and the three years undefeated football teams. Though not as successful as the boys, the senior girls also took an active part in sports. The senior cheerleaders did a fine job in leading the student body and backing the teams. In cooperation with the class of 1959, we held the annual Junior-Senior Prom. ln June the last function as a class was our class trip. We are proud of our history as a class and we hope that the future holds as much success as our high school days. V157 FOOTBALL RICPORT First Undefeated, Untied Team in School History For the third straight year the Oliver Ames football team completed its season un- defeated. The past season was the first. however, that the team was undefeated and also untied, thus handing to the school the best record compiled by an Oliver Ames High football team. The season started on the right foot by defeating a good ball team from Swansea. who had tied O.A. the previous three seasons: The next two, determined Whitman and Mansfield, also gave O.A. a rough time. After outplaying a small but spirited Scituate club in the mud and rain. O.A. had a comparatively easy time with the next four teams. Westwocmd, Franklin. Canton, and Foxboro. After the previous eight wins the boys looked forward with great desire to the tra- ditional Thanksgiving Day game with Class CR Randolph. Realizing a win would make them members of one of the best teams in the school history, the boys worked hard in anticipation of a tough game with Randolph. Reaching the maximum for this game. O.A. emerged with a resounding 311--0 Team Victory. A Coaches Museato and Nixon worked as long and as hard for this great season as any of the players and will greatly miss the nine seniors who played a major part in the teamis efforts. The nine seniors are eo-captains Dave Tyler, who set a new O.A. scoring record by gathering 101 points in a season, and Rob Silva, uAxe,' Chapman, halfback Gil Heino, end Larry Tingley, guards Ron May and Norby Lyons. and the two tackles Rick Martin and George Marshall. With the return of eight lettermen and a large group of promising freshmen, Coaches Museato and Nixon are looking forward to extending the 26-game winning streak. 744135447 endow 75415466 Wfwww DAVE RON BOB AXE RICKEY GEORGE NORBY CIL TING Und1'fe'atvd 3 I won't go down! However, the team was hampered with the flu sickness throughout the season, and the girls finished with a poor two wins, one tie, and six losses. The girls opened against a strong Canton eleven but were overpowered by a score of 6-1. However, the girls came back with a 3-2 victory over Randolph High, which lifted the team,s spirit considerably. The next game was a tie with Stoughton 1-1, but the team had double defeats to Thayer and Foxboro, and another to Canton. ln their last game on the eighth of November, with the temperature in the fifties, the team took a short ride to Stoughton where they proceeded to lower their rival 2-1. For seniors June Carlin and June Lanigan, Co-Captains, and Anne Taylor and Claire Williams, this was the last season. The Hockomock League did not present any opposition to O.A. During the regular season the team hit the 100 point mark twice, against Foxboro H161 and Sharon 11015. Art Wilde had a 28.6 points-per-game average to hecome one of the top scorers in the state. Art also was elected to the state all-scholastic team. The aim of Coach Val Muscato and the team was to capture the Class HAP South Shore Championship which had evaded them for three previous seasons. This year, however, there was no stopping the determined hasketeers as they ripped through Hingham, Middlehoro, and Plymouth, and heavily defeated old nemesis Wareham in the finals to gain the long-awaited South Shore crown. OA. entered the Tech Tournament confident of the state class HC championship. A bye for the first round was drawn which sent us to the quarter-finals against Case High of Swansea, defending class MCT, champions. After defeating Case and whipping Somerset, winners of the Narragansett League, O.A. faced the hig test in North Andover High in the finals. The game proved exciting and close throughout its entirety. North Andover compiled an early lead that proved insurmountable for 0.A. despite a last period surge by the never-say-die Tigers. Coach Val Muscato will miss co-captains Art Wilde and llave Tyler, and seniors Dave lillson, Shen Baxter, Boh Silva, and Charlie Hallahan, but the coach can look forward to another successful season with the return of Dan Bradley, Budge Camp- bell, Mac Smith, George Luke, Ron Buha, Phil Baker, and sophomore Charlie Mc- lVlenamy. With only three girls back from last year's team Coach Barrows had to pick a new and inexperienced team that would represent the school to the hest of its ahilit . Y C0-Captains: Anne Taylor, June Lanigan The team this season was only a mediocre one, winning six, while losing six. Since most of the team will be back next year, the season should he a good one. Appearing for the last time were co-captains, June Lanigan and Anne Taylor, the team's highest scorer. The only other senior on the team was Betty Fratus. Back next year will be such promising girls as Jeanne Clark, Pat MaQuire, Priscilla Almquist, Marlene Green, Peggy Hall, Susan Vendt, Chris Ranta, and two promising freshmen, Janice Taylor and Linda Swanberg. Although the girls did not match the winning ways of the boys, the team did show a great deal of spirit and certainly held high the values of sportsmanship. We wish to thank Mrs. Barrows for her coaching and leadership. Then our losing streak was snapped when we beat Mansfield 39-0. We went on to win two more games only to lose our last five games. Although the season was a failure with a 3-9 record, the girls kept up their spirit and desire to play. Lois Bowden again was operating at first, Joan Hall and Marlene Greene covered the hot corner at third. Anne Taylor and Bev MacKay played the double play positions of short and second respectively. The outfield rotated with Rita Crabbe, Nancy Rollins, Betty Fratus, and Martha Talbot. Behind the plate was Marilyn Anderson. The pitching stall did an excellent job, also. TRACK REPORT In his first year at the helm in track, Coach Val Muscato established himself as a top man in this field. The O.A. congregation placed second in the Hockomock League meet behind a powerful Stoughton High School, and second in the South Shore meet behind a well- balanced East Bridgewater team. Co-captains Tom Farrell, a swift half-miler, and Ed Meehan, an established miler, are enthusiastic and are hopeful of bringing home the Hockomock title as well as the South Shore Class MAB title. The loss of Bill Baxter, Mark Deveny, Dave Sundell, and Cliff Rideout through graduation leaves a gap that hopes to be filled by, a host of promising underclassmen. Trackmen to watch this coming season include co-captains Tom Farrell and Ed Meehan, Dave Tyler, versatile dash man, Allan Bashian, high jumper with a lot of spring, Edmund Delgado, broad jumper, Paul Rideout, pole vaulter and half-miler, John Olson, long distance runner, and Norbert Lyons, a shot-putter.
