The team missed playoffs by losing a heartbreaker to Kutztown. The Lynx finished Trdyn league just one behind Kutztown and wot) the Reading Tournament. Five players were named to the Berks County All Star ! Team. They included Scott Smith, the First Team All Cotinty Defender and East Division- I al Team Defenderj'Dan Hannum, East Divisional Tea tnSotoEast Divisional I Team, Greg Zook, honorable mention, and Jamie Christie, honorable mention. Although the team's leagu'd record of2-8-2 was disappointing, the team steadily improved throughout the season. This year's girls' cross-country team ran their best season ever. They compiled an outstanding overall record of 9-2 and a league record of 6-2. The girls finished the season in third place in the county and first place in AA team standings. Junior Pam Mitchell led the team in every dual meet and placed 14th at the county meet and 24th at the district meet. Everyone steadily improved their times to help the team accomplish what they did. The team placed first in the Tulpehocken Invitational Run, and in the District III Run, they placed ninth out of 29 full teams. Freshman Jake Rothermel had a fantastic first year, placing highly in all meets, including the Tulpenhocken and Muhlenberg Invitationals, in which he placed second. Junior Steve Hartline also added wins to his record, as he finished third and fifteenth in the Tulpenhocken and Muhlenberg Invitationals. Both Jake and Steve were named to the Honorable Mention All-Star team. Senior John Scalia's last year proved to be a winning one, as he finished fourth in the Muhlenberg Invitational, and tenth in the Conference Run, earning himself a medal. Coaches Mr. Larry Wildermuth and Mr. Tom To-borowski spent much of the season breaking in first year and J. V. wrestlersyo fill in Varsity weight slots. The Varsity League record at the end of the season was 5 wins and 3 losses, while Junior Varsity finished with 7 wins and 1 loss. Some of this season's strongest wrestlers noted for their ability were Sophomores, Craig Britton (98 lbs.) and Joey Fick (105 lbs), Junior, Dan Hannum (112 lbs.) and Seniors, Jeff Klemmer (145 lbs.) and Ben Vandevort (j y lbs.). Craig Britton spent part of the season with a hand injury but came back to become Sectional champ and to place 2nd in Regional competion. Joey Fick was also a Sectional champion, was a 4th place Regional winner and was named a Division All-Star. Dan Hannum was a Sectional champ, placed 1st in Regional competition and was named a Division and County All-Star. Dan also has the distinct honor of being Oley's first wrestler to win a State level competition, which makes him the 3rd best wrestler at his respective weight in Pennsylvania. Jeff Klemmer was also a Sectional champ, while placing 3rd in Regionals and being named to the Division and County All-Star Teams. Ben Vandevort was a Sectional champ. Their regular season record may not show it, but their performance in district and state playoffs prove it. The girls obtained a regular season record of 12 wins and 10 losses, and a playoff record of 4 wins and 2 losses. At the Muhlenberg Christmas Tournament, the team defeated Wyomissing and Central Catholic to become champions. Sharon Howard and Karen Howard were named to the All-Tournament Team. To the surprise of both the school and the coun ty, the girls steadily advanced in 3 competition, finally beating Anville-and earning a place in the state tournament. The highlight of the year occurred when the Lynx defeated previously unbeaten Cocalico. Other highlights were wins over CentralCatholic and a thrilling victory over Daniel Boone. The Lynx had a league record of 4 wins and 6 losses and a final league standing of 4th of 6 teams. Ronald Steffe had an excellent season with 5 awards acknowledging his outstanding achievements. He was named to the Exeter Christmas Tournament All-Star Team. He scored an outstanding 41 points against Wyo-missing and became Oley's all time leading scorer with 1034 points. He was chosen to play in the Duke Deluca All-Star game and was named to the Berks County Coaches Round Table Division I All-StarTeam. Their best performances were at the Oley Tournament and the Mount Penn Tournament. The boys' power volleyball team placed second in all of its tournaments which included the Brandywine Tournament, the Schuylkill Valley Tournament and the Mount Penn Tournament. Mark Herbein was named to the all-tournament teams at all three tournaments. Scott Smith was named to the all-tournament team at Brandywine. The Big Blue Hitting Crew had another winning season with a record of 17-4-1. The team qualified for the District III tournament by winning the Division Championship for the ninth time in ten years. The improvement of Mike Distasio at bat, and Keith Kline, Brian Hamm, Bill Krall and Steve Kauffman offensively greatly aided the Lynx in their winning season. Brian Hamm was Oley's top pitcher throughout the season. Mike Distasio was a surprise on the mound by pitching a no hitter against Central Catholic. Congratulations guys, we're proud of you!!! Behind Pthe pitching of Sharon Howard, the Lady Lynx won the Division, County, and District III Championships. The girls made it to the State Championships, but lost the first round to Minersville in a very wet game. The next day was not much better when the girls were forced to play on a muddy field. Although, it was a very exciting game, the Lady Lynx could not seem to pull ahead. The softball team will be losing five seniors. They are; Cathleen Cassidy, Lisa Edwards, Lori Fegely, Karen Howard and Sharon Howard. The team will miss them but will keep their winning spirit alive through next year. A number of their members qualified for District III competition. Among them were Scott Sikora in the high jump Terry Zechman, Jeff Seidel, and A.J. Neuheimer in the pole vault; Pete Smith in the long jump; Jeff Lambert in the javelin and John Baker in the 400 dash. Scott Sikora had a personal best high jump of six feet two inches, which placed him third in the District III meet. Terry Zechman pole vaulted to a height of twelve feet six inches which tied him for fifth place at Districts. This qualified him for states. At states Terry placed third by vaulting to a height of thirteen feet nine inches, which broke a school record. What in the world? Stretching. Students Thrive On Variety The Matchmaker On November 22 and 23, 1985, the Senior Class presented Thorton Wilder's rowdy farce The Matchmaker . The play was directed by Mrs. Jennifer Hoeschele, who was assisted by student director Tammy Wolszczenski. The lighting and stage construction was done by Mr. Bruce Betz and the stage crew. In the play, a rich old merchant named Horace Vandergelder decides to marry. He employs the assistance of a matchmaker, Dolly Levi. Throughout the play, they become involved with two clerks, Barnaby and Cornelius, a hatshop owner, Mrs. Molloy, and a head waiter at the expensive Harmonia Gardens Restaurant, where the play climaxed into hilarious complications. On April 11 and 12, the junior class presented Hiss the Villian, a trilogy of melodramas. Out of a total of twenty-seven bands in their division, Oley placed fourth in the Firemen's Parade held on Friday evening. The next day, in the Grand Feature Parade, the Marching Lynx placed first out of thirty-one bands in Class C. On Sunday, May 4, the band stopped in Washington D.C., on their way home. They toured the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and saw a show entitled Big River , a take-off from the Huckleberry Finn stories. When the buses arrived in Alsace, a victory parade including three fire companies and numerous cars awaited them. All things considered, it was an enjoyable, educational, and victorious trip. A total of twelve area bands participated receiving ratings of outstanding, excellent and good, as well as outstanding soloists The Jazz Band also traveled to Daniel Boone's festival. We received a rating of ertellent at both festivals. Choir, Harmony, And Rythm On May 10, 1986, the O.V.H.S. Concert Choir presented Rythm of the Night , a musical joy to the ears. This concert featured Hello by Lionel Richie, Im So Excited , by the Pointer Sisters and many other songs. There was also an intriguing swizzel stick routine to Rythm of the Night , by DeBarge, and great choreography by Michelle Wasik. The Alcazar in Segovia. U m On March 21, 1986, 22 Spanish students from the Oley Valley set out on a 10-day journey of Spjin, France and Belgium. The gang saw a bullfight in Madrid, traveled to Cur dad Encantada and Cuenca, Segovia, and Toledo. They saw many beautiful cathedrals, castles and palaces On the sixth day of their trip they boarded an overnight train to Paris and traveled while they slept. In Paris they took a boat ride on the Seine River, saw the Eiffel Tower, Notre ?, the Arc de Triomphe, toured the Louvre and shopped at a real Parisian ient store. On the ninth day of the trip the students boarded a bus and led to Brussels, Belgium where they shopped, toured and ate Belgium ffles.
