Horsehide Hitters Almost Win Division Championship Well, we lost the big one — and it's hard to forget, especially since it has been 17 years since Oley won the County Baseball Championship. But let's look back at the whole season ... the 9 League games and the Southern Division title we didn’t lose. Actually, the team’s over-all record is 11 wins. 6 losses, while their Division tally stands at 9 wins, 1 loss. On March 31. Oley opened the season by losing to Fleetwood. 11-4. However, the Lynx bounced back in their second assignment to blank Kutztown. 3-0. James Hill went all the way in that game, allowing the Cougars only 3 hits. The two big offensive plays were Timothy Brill’s triple to left, scoring Milton Manwiller. and Kim Lorah’s slide to score himself. Next. Oley suffered a 4-1 setback at the hands of Brandywine. Keith Kleinsmith gave up only 2 hits. To complete the non-League portion of the 1971 season, the Lynx were axed by Schuylkill Valley. 7-6. The first League game saw Oley break out for 11 hits, including 2 each by Hill, Brill, and David LeVan. Kleinsmith went all the way. allowing only 6 hits and 1 walk for a 10-4 victory over Wyomissing. Next, the Lynx took Daniel Boone. 6-3 Manwiller and Gary Noll had 2 hits each; Bill, Hill, and Thomas Levan had 1 apiece. Win number three was against Exeter. 8-5. Three hits were scored by Kleinsmith; 2 each by William Werner and Manwiller; and 1 each by Daniel Delp, Hill, and Levan. Hill went the distance, striking out 8 and allowing only 5 hits. Helping to clobber Mt. Penn. 14-0, Kleinsmith allowed only 4 hits. Hill collected a triple and 2 singles; Manwiller and LeVan, 2 hits each; and Brill, Kleinsmith, Levan, Noll, Werner, Randy Hoffman, and Craig Knabb, 1 apiece. Twin Valley was the next team to fall. Hill threw the 1-0. four-hitter game, while Kleinsmith scored the only run by walking, stealing second, and scoring off an error. Stretching their winning streak to 6. the Lynx thumped Wyomissing. 8-3. Noll collected 2 hits, while Brill, Hill, LeVan, Levan, Lorah, and Manwiller had one each. Three extra innings were needed to outplay Exeter. 1-0. LeVan led off with a single and reached second when Noll’s attempted sacrifice bunt was errored. Delp followed with another sacrifice for an out to put David on third. Finally, a dramatic line single to left by Werner scored David for the winning run. By toppling second-place Daniel Boone. 7-3. Oley clinched the Southern Division Berks Scholastic League Baseball crown. Oley had 2 runs in the second, and then took over for good in the fifth. Manwiller led off with a double and scored on Hill’s single Brill’s screamer then cleared the fence in left field for 2 more runs. The Lynx then added 2 additional runs in the top of the seventh, but really didn't need them as pitcher Kleinsmith blanked the Blazers over the last four innings, walking none and striking out 8 for his fifth win. Still in the winner’s circle — and enjoying it — Oley bumped Twin Valley. 4-2. Trailing 0-2, the Lynx rallied in the sixth when Manwiller reached first on an error, followed by a pair of walks, and then a single by Werner which scored Kleinsmith. An insurance run was added in the seventh. Sophomore Wayne Sowers pitched; Hill was his relief. After going 9-0 in the League. Oley was jarred by a 4-0 mauling by Mt. Penn. Delp, Hill, and LeVan collected 1 hit apiece. In the playoff game for the Championship at Reading Municipal Stadium. Oley was humiliated. 14-0. by Governor Mifflin. The Mustangs stifled the Lynx hitters, allowing only 2 hits — a clean single to center by Brill m the fourth, and a bunt by Manwiller in the sixth. Then, unbelievable as it appeared, less than 24 hours later. Oley kalsomined Fleetwood, 2-0! Hill had a 2-hit. 1-walk effort which saw not a single Tiger get to third. Oley's 5 hits were doubles by Hill and Delp, and singles by Noll, Kleinsmith, and LeVan. Finally that long-awaited last game with Governor Mifflin for the coveted title! It was 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, favor Oley — but then the Mustangs began hitting like crazy, and the Lynx defenses — which had so beautifully frustrated Fleetwood — got the jitters. and Governor Mifflin took the game. 5-1. and. along with it. the title. 12
