Although several good individual performances were registered during the season, the 1971 Junior High Track and Field Team finished fourth in the Southern Division (5-member schools) with a 1-win, 3-loss record. In the first meet (April 2), Exeter pulverized Oley. 99-10. However, the Junior spikesters did succeed in scoring 5 second-places (the 75. David Walb in 9.7; the broad jump. Miles Reitnouer; the shot. Woodrow Sanders; the 440 relay in 59.8; the 880 relay in 1: 58) and 1 third (the 120 low hurdles. Elam Folk, in 16.8). The second meet (April 7) also was a disaster. Wyomissmg trounced Oley. 861?-22V?. First places went to Walb (the 75 in 9.5) and James Angstadt (the high jump. 4’10”). Seconds were earned by Lars Schneider (the 880). Lance Atkins (pole vault). Sanders (the broad jump and the shot), and the relay teams (the 440 and the 880). Mark Applegate (the 220) and Folk (the 120 low hurdles) won thirds. Success finally marked the next contest, when Oley edged out Twin Valley. 57-51 (April 14). First-place winners included Walb (the 75 in 9.7). Folk (the 120 lows in 16.5). the 440 relay team (Paul Dewalt, Keith Hartline, Gregg Sweigert, Walb, in 58.6). Atkins (pole vault. 7'6”). Angstadt (high jump. 4’ 11 ). Sanders (shot. 42' 1 Vi”), and Matthew Righter (discus. 100’ 2”). Seconds went to Applegate (the 220). Schneider (the 440 and the 880). David Melcher (the 120 lows), and the 880 relay team. Thirds were earned by Scott Yoder (the 100 and the 220). Dewalt (the 75). Stefan Strunk (the 440). David Albitz (the 880). David Johnson (the 120 lows). Folk (the broad jump). Steven Renner (the high jump). Keith Blankenbiller (the shot), and Sanders (discus). But that brief moment of triumph was wiped away by Daniel Boone in a 76 V2-32 Vi sweep over Oley (April 22). Among the Lynx who did manage to take firsts were Walb (the 75 in 9.9), Angstadt (high jump. 4’10”:). and Sanders (the shot (45'9 ). Melcher (120 lows; broad jump). Schneider (880). and Strunk (440) achieved seconds, while Atkins (75; pole vault). Folk (120 lows). Blankenbiller (shot put). Sanders (discus). and Rickie Zettlemoyer (high jump) took thirds. In both the 14th Annual C.E. Cole Meet (April 24) and the John H. Shaner Interscholastic Meet (May 1). the team failed to score. Four days later (May 5). at the Venzke Relays — thanks to the efforts of Applegate, Jeffrey Rigby, Blankenbiller, Thomas Rounsville, Dewalt, Hartline, Sweigert, Walb, Renner, and Schneider — Oley placed fourth in the 440. 100 lb. class relay; fifth in the 440. 115 lb. class relay; sixth in both the 440 open and the 880 relays; eighth in the mile relay; and ninth in the mile. No score was made at the Governor Mifflin Victory Meet. May 8. One point was scored in the Exeter Championship Meet (May 12) to give Oley a ninth-place tie with Schuylkill Valley. Walb tallied a fifth place in the 75-yard dash. At the Paul Harris A.C. Olympic Meet (June 12). Wayne Sowers came in fourth with a 5 2 in the high jump, intermediate division. Of the 48 boys who participated. David Walb and Woodrow Sanders were outstanding. David scored a total of 24 points, while Woodrow earned 21.
