Trackmen End Season With 3-2 Log — A 73-67 non-League defeat by Kutztown. March 29. opened the 1971 cinder season. Barry Stebbins posted wins in the long jump(19'2 Vfe ) and Dole vault (10 ). while Richard Medlar copped the 100 (11.1) and the 440 (55.1). Teammates Mark Oewalt scored in the 2-mile run (11:17.5); Michael Daniels, discus (112 7”); Steven Dietrich, shot (40 1”); and Glenn Burkert, javelin (1514”). Anthony Ferreri added a first-place tie in the lows (23.2). Next, on April 22. the Lynx fell to Exeter. 85-55. Stebbins scored a triple, bagging the long jump (19' ), th » high jump (5’4”). and the pole vault (10'2”). Other firsts included Medlar, the 100 (11.0); Ferreri, high hurdles (18.0); Dennis Steffe, low hurdles (15.4); and Burkert, javelin (131 9”). Sparked by doubles from Ferreri (the lows. 14.6: the highs. 17.3) and Stebbins (long jump. 19'; high jump. 5'8”). Oley nipped Wyomissing. 71-69. April 6. Other winners were William Schroer, the mile (5:00.3); Dewalt, the 2-mile (12:03); Dietrich, shot (419”); and the mile relay team — Michael Bortz, Eric Irwin, Albert Phillippy, David Christman (3:58.7) Medlar added 3 second-places: the 100. the 220. the 440. Oley's second League win. 81-60. was at the expense of Fleetwood. May 12. Triples were turned in by Medlar (the 100. 11.1: the 220. 25.0: the 440. 53.1) and Stebbins (high jump. 5'10”; broad jump. 20'3 ; pole vault. 10’6”). Ferreri grabbed the low hurdles (22.1) and the high hurdles (17.4); Dewalt, the 2-mile (10:52.9); and Daniels, discus (122 3 fc”). Triples by Medlar (the 100. 11.0; the 220. 23.6: the 440. 54.4) and Stebbins (broad jump. 18 2 v4 ; high jump. 5'8”; pole vault. 9'). and singles from John Yoder (triple jump. 35 11 V2 '). Steven Angstadt (javelin. 130’6”). Irwin (the 880. 2:19.4). Dewalt (the 2-mile. 11:05.1), and Ferreri (the lows. 22.4). helped Oley wallop Twin Valley. 90-50. April 14. Oley’s tally of 11 points in the April 17 Albright Invitational Meet placed the team tenth (in a field of 21). Medlar registered fourth in the 220. second in the 440: Stebbins took third in the long jump, fifth in the pole vault; and Bruce Willman scored fifth in the javelin heave. The last League meet saw Oley lose to Daniel Boone. 75-65. April 22. in spite of a triple by Stebbins (long jump. 19'5”; high jump. 5'10 ; pole vault. 9 ) and a double by Medlar (the 440. 54.0: the 880. 2:09.8). Dewalt had a single in the 2-mile (11:00.2). and Daniels added another in the discus (125 5 Vfc”). At the Leonard Stephens Invitational, the Lynx spikesters (Christman, Phillippy, Medlar, Michael Robinson) netted fifth in their heat in the high school class mile relay (3: 49.0). Stebbins was third in both the high jump and long jump: Medlar took third in the 440. With a 10-point score. Oley ranked 13 of 18 entrants. On May 1. Oley (10 points) was ninth in total scoring of the 17 schools participating in the John Shaner Meet at West Reading. Stebbins tallied second in the long jump (20’ 1 ”) and third in the high jump (6’); Medlar came in third in the 880 (2:02.5). In the All-County Meet at Governor Mifflin. May 8. Medlar won fourth in the 440; Stebbins, second in both the pole vault and the high jump, and third in the long jump. Their efforts gave the Lynx 13 points for ninth place (16 participating schools). With 21 points. Oley placed fifth among 14 Berks County Class B schools competing in the Muhlenberg Meet. May 11 Stebbins won the Class B ’’Most Valuable Athlete” trophy with 2 first-places (long jump. 20’3”; high jump. 6’1”), and a second in the pole vault (11 ’6”). Med'ar earned a fourth in the ' 4-mile run (52.6); Ferreri, a fifth in the lows (14.6); and Mark Searfoss, Phillippy, Christman, and Ferreri, fifth in both the 880 and the mile relays. On May 15. Stebbins missed going to the State Meet by 1 notch as he took a third-place medal in the pole vault at the District 3 Championships at Lancaster. However, he did establish a new school record by clearing 12 feet. Medlar scored sixth in the 440 (32.0). Both Medlar and Stebbins were invited to participate in the Ron Regar All-Star Meet at Albright. May 25. Richard came in third in the 440. while Barry was second in the long jumpand the high jump. t (ABOVE): Richard Medlar (second highest scorer. 69 points) exerts his all to cop the 440.
