He not only puts in a full day of teaching music, but also directs the Marching Lynx (both in concerts and parades) and constructs all the stage settings in the evenings and on weekends. For his willingness to help us and for his sacrifice of time, we proudly dedicate the 1972 OLEAN to MR. BRUCE K. In the first meet (April 2), Exeter pulverized Oley. 99-10. However, the Junior spikesters did succeed in scoring 5 second-places (the 75. David Walb in 9.7; the broad jump. Miles Reitnouer; the shot. Woodrow Sanders; the 440 relay in 59.8; the 880 relay in 1: 58) and 1 third (the 120 low hurdles. Elam Folk, in 16.8). The second meet (April 7) also was a disaster. Wyomissmg trounced Oley. 861?-22V?. First places went to Walb (the 75 in 9.5) and James Angstadt (the high jump. 4’10”). Seconds were earned by Lars Schneider (the 880). Lance Atkins (pole vault). Sanders (the broad jump and the shot), and the relay teams (the 440 and the 880). Mark Applegate (the 220) and Folk (the 120 low hurdles) won thirds. Folk (the 120 lows in 16.5). the 440 relay team (Paul Dewalt, Keith Hartline, Gregg Sweigert, Walb, in 58.6). Atkins (pole vault. 7'6”). Angstadt (high jump. 4’ 11 ). Thirds were earned by Scott Yoder (the 100 and the 220). Dewalt (the 75). Stefan Strunk (the 440). David Albitz (the 880). David Johnson (the 120 lows). Folk (the broad jump). Steven Renner (the high jump). Keith Blankenbiller (the shot), and Sanders (discus). But that brief moment of triumph was wiped away by Daniel Boone in a 76 V2-32 Vi sweep over Oley (April 22). Among the Lynx who did manage to take firsts were Walb (the 75 in 9.9), Angstadt (high jump. 4’10”:). and Sanders (the shot (45'9 ). Melcher (120 lows; broad jump). Schneider (880). and Strunk (440) achieved seconds, while Atkins (75; pole vault). Folk (120 lows). Blankenbiller (shot put). Sanders (discus). and Rickie Zettlemoyer (high jump) took thirds. In both the 14th Annual C.E. Cole Meet (April 24) and the John H. Shaner Interscholastic Meet (May 1). the team failed to score. Four days later (May 5). at the Venzke Relays — thanks to the efforts of Applegate, Jeffrey Rigby, Blankenbiller, Thomas Rounsville, Dewalt, Hartline, Sweigert, Walb, Renner, and Schneider — Oley placed fourth in the 440. 100 lb. class relay; fifth in the 440. 115 lb. class relay; sixth in both the 440 open and the 880 relays; eighth in the mile relay; and ninth in the mile. No score was made at the Governor Mifflin Victory Meet. May 8. One point was scored in the Exeter Championship Meet (May 12) to give Oley a ninth-place tie with Schuylkill Valley. Horsehide Hitters Almost Win Division Championship Well, we lost the big one — and it's hard to forget, especially since it has been 17 years since Oley won the County Baseball Championship. But let's look back at the whole season ... the 9 League games and the Southern Division title we didn’t lose. Actually, the team’s over-all record is 11 wins. 6 losses, while their Division tally stands at 9 wins, 1 loss. On March 31. Oley opened the season by losing to Fleetwood. 11-4. However, the Lynx bounced back in their second assignment to blank Kutztown. 3-0. James Hill went all the way in that game, allowing the Cougars only 3 hits. The two big offensive plays were Timothy Brill’s triple to left, scoring Milton Manwiller. and Kim Lorah’s slide to score himself. Next. Oley suffered a 4-1 setback at the hands of Brandywine. Keith Kleinsmith gave up only 2 hits. To complete the non-League portion of the 1971 season, the Lynx were axed by Schuylkill Valley. 7-6. The first League game saw Oley break out for 11 hits, including 2 each by Hill, Brill, and David LeVan. Kleinsmith went all the way. allowing only 6 hits and 1 walk for a 10-4 victory over Wyomissing. Next, the Lynx took Daniel Boone. 6-3 Manwiller and Gary Noll had 2 hits each; Bill, Hill, and Thomas Levan had 1 apiece. Win number three was against Exeter. 8-5. Three hits were scored by Kleinsmith; 2 each by William Werner and Manwiller; and 1 each by Daniel Delp, Hill, and Levan. Hill went the distance, striking out 8 and allowing only 5 hits. Helping to clobber Mt. Penn. 14-0, Kleinsmith allowed only 4 hits. Hill collected a triple and 2 singles; Manwiller and LeVan, 2 hits each; and Brill, Kleinsmith, Levan, Noll, Werner, Randy Hoffman, and Craig Knabb, 1 apiece. Twin Valley was the next team to fall. Hill threw the 1-0. four-hitter game, while Kleinsmith scored the only run by walking, stealing second, and scoring off an error. Stretching their winning streak to 6. the Lynx thumped Wyomissing. 8-3. Noll collected 2 hits, while Brill, Hill, LeVan, Levan, Lorah, and Manwiller had one each. Three extra innings were needed to outplay Exeter. 1-0. LeVan led off with a single and reached second when Noll’s attempted sacrifice bunt was errored. Delp followed with another sacrifice for an out to put David on third. Finally, a dramatic line single to left by Werner scored David for the winning run. By toppling second-place Daniel Boone. 7-3. Oley clinched the Southern Division Berks Scholastic League Baseball crown. Oley had 2 runs in the second, and then took over for good in the fifth. Manwiller led off with a double and scored on Hill’s single Brill’s screamer then cleared the fence in left field for 2 more runs. The Lynx then added 2 additional runs in the top of the seventh, but really didn't need them as pitcher Kleinsmith blanked the Blazers over the last four innings, walking none and striking out 8 for his fifth win. Still in the winner’s circle — and enjoying it — Oley bumped Twin Valley. 4-2. Trailing 0-2, the Lynx rallied in the sixth when Manwiller reached first on an error, followed by a pair of walks, and then a single by Werner which scored Kleinsmith. An insurance run was added in the seventh. Sophomore Wayne Sowers pitched; Hill was his relief. After going 9-0 in the League. Oley was jarred by a 4-0 mauling by Mt. Penn. Delp, Hill, and LeVan collected 1 hit apiece. In the playoff game for the Championship at Reading Municipal Stadium. Oley was humiliated. 14-0. by Governor Mifflin. The Mustangs stifled the Lynx hitters, allowing only 2 hits — a clean single to center by Brill m the fourth, and a bunt by Manwiller in the sixth. Then, unbelievable as it appeared, less than 24 hours later. Oley kalsomined Fleetwood, 2-0! Hill had a 2-hit. 1-walk effort which saw not a single Tiger get to third. Oley's 5 hits were doubles by Hill and Delp, and singles by Noll, Kleinsmith, and LeVan. Finally that long-awaited last game with Governor Mifflin for the coveted title! It was 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, favor Oley — but then the Mustangs began hitting like crazy, and the Lynx defenses — which had so beautifully frustrated Fleetwood — got the jitters. and Governor Mifflin took the game. 5-1. and. along with it. the title. 12 (LEFT): Members of the 1971 Baseball Team. Bye, Bye, Birdie tells the story of rock-and roll singer Conrad Birdie (Wilson Eshbach), who is about to leave for military service. He is an Elvis Presley type, wears gaudy costumes and speaks in a rugged, “he-man” voice. Albert Peterson (Steven Delp), his agent, is a pleasant, mild-mannered ex-English teacher-turned-composer. It is his faithful secretary Rose Alvarez (Ruth Ann Landis) that keeps him and Birdie moving forward in the world. Rosie concocts one final national publicity plan before Conrad s induction: He will bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss! Kim MacAfee (Pamela Reitnouer), in Sweet Apple. Ohio, wins the honor. A fetching girl of 15. Kim sings with springlike ardor How Lovely To Be a Woman. as she pulls on woolen socks, blue jeans, and a baggy sweater that characterize loveliness in young ladies today. The arrival of Birdie at the Sweet Apple railroad station causes wholesale swoonings — by both young and old alike! Birdie says that his success is due to the fact that he is Honestly Sincere when he sings. The quiet town thereupon goes into a spin. The MacAfee household (Jay Levengood, Marjorie Weiss, Daniel Cawley) is completely upset by the visiting show. Kim's father, at first lamenting the entire uproar, changes his mind when informed he and his family will appear on television with Birdie. His Hymn for Sunday Evening is a salute to the greater glory of Ed Sullivan. But the TV show becomes a disaster. To the distress of everyone. Kim’s jealous boyfriend. Hugo (Dan Lambert), flattens Birdie cold just before the long-awaited One Last Kiss is to be given. As a result. Kim and Hugo break up. and Rosie and Albert follow suit. At last, even Birdie becomes disgusted, and sprints out on the town with some teenagers. He feels tense with Albert and is tired of being watched over. The parents of the community cannot understand any of what is happening around them, and they express this in Kids. Rosie, still waiting for that band of gold from Albert after eight years, also lets loose and invades a Shriners' meeting at Maud's Bar. Then she decides to become Spanish Rose. the Latin American spitfire Albert’s leadfooted, catastrophe-ridden mother Brenda Roth-ermel, has always held her to be. Finally, things are resolved. Kim sees the light and is reunited with Hugo, and Albert — breaking from his mother's apron strings — finally proposes to Rosie. Other songs included were What Did I Ever See in Him? ; Rosie ; One Boy : The Telephone Hour (pictured on page 5); and Healthy. Normal. American Boy. Credit for the play's success — the first musical here at Oley — goes to Mr. Betz (the director). Mr. Sample (his assistant). Miss Haas (vocal assistant), and Mrs. Reitnauer (choreographer). And. of course, we should not forget the 65 students in the cast and the countless others behind the scenes. Soccer Lads Tie For 3rd — A total of 5 wins. 1 tie. and 6 losses gave Oley a third-place tie (with Hamburg) in the Eastern Division's 1971 Soccer League. Oley's season opened with a 3-1 loss (NL) to Quakertown. Then Hamburg defeated Oley. 3-2 (L). The Hawks jumped into a 1-0 lead m the first, but the Lynx battled back to tie the count with a goal by Barry Stebbins, and early in the third took the lead on Timothy Brill’s point. However. Hamburg succeeded in clinching it in the last 8 minutes. Brill’s 5 goals, plus 3 from Stebbins, and 1 by Gary Noll sparked the Lynx to a 9-2 win (NL) over Wilson. The JV team also won (1-0) when David Wanshop scored on a pass from Miles Reitnouer near the end of their game. Next. Oley blanked Brandywine. 4-0 (L). but had some difficulty in doing so. The Lynx couldn’t score until, with just over a minute left in the third. Noll hit on a penalty kick. Then, in the fourth. Stebbins registered 2 unassisted goals, and Brill added another. Oley's only point in the Fleetwood game came in the third on a 6-yard cross from left-wing Kurt Gernerd. The fourth saw a strong Tiger team score 3 goals to take the match, 3-1 (L). The JV's followed with a 3-2 overtime win against Kutztown. Wanshop tallied first on an assist from Eric Gernerd, who then banged through the other goals. Eric’s winning boot came on an assist by David. A 3-0 (L) dubbing by Oley of Twin Valley came the next day. The Lynx did all their scoring in the second half, as Noll hit one from 18 yards out. and Stebbins booted one from 12 yards Brill, who had an assist on Stebbins’ score, knocked one in from 6 yards in the last period with an assist by Daniel Delp. Brandywine’s JV’s then toppled the little Lynx. 4-2. Oley led. 1-0 . at the half on a pass from Wanshop to Eric Gernerd. Nevertheless. Brandywine scored 3 times in the third and once in the fourth. Boyd Werner provided the second Oley point in the third with a 50-yard shot. Mt. Penn came from behind twice to tie and finally upset Oley. 4-2 (L). By heading in Glenn Burkert's chip shot. Stebbins made a point with 1 second remaining in the first. In the second. Brill scored on a 30-yard shot. Kutztown overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit to beat Oley. 3-2 (L). Noll and David LeVan hit for the Lynx — both in the first half. Hamburg and Oley battled through 20 minutes of overtime play only to have the score remain 2-2 (L). The Lynx were leading. 1-0. on Brill’s penalty kick shot, and led again (2-1) in the third on Stebbins’ 12-yard breakaway goal. Then, with 35 seconds remaining. Hamburg tied the game, thereby sending it into overtime. Burkert supplied the Oley edge over Brandywine. 1-0 (L). as he slammed in the only goal from 30- yards out at the 14:25 mark in the second. The next day saw a 3-0 shotout of our JV squad by Mt. Penn. Stebbins’ 3-goal performance spearheaded Oley’s 4-1 (L) victory over Twin Valley. Brill opened the scoring by blasting a shot through the goalie’s hands Stebbins followed with 2 goals in the second and 1 in the fourth — the last two on breakaways. Goalie Kim Lorah missed in a bid for a fourth shutout when a Twin Valley corner kick was knocked from his hands and into the goal. Eric Gernerd and Boyd Werner provided 2 points in the JV match against Brandywine, but to no avail. The Bullets took it. 4-2. Although it proved a losing effort, goalie Lorah played a superb game at Reading Municipal Stadium against Fleetwood. He staved off several pressure situations and helped himself out of further trouble with fine kicks. But Oley drew a blank. 3-0 (L). Oley downed Mt. Penn. 2-0 (L), on 2 goals by Stebbins (one from 6-and another from 12-yards out). The end came when Kutztown trimmed Oley. 4-2 (L). Brill scored on a pass from Stebbins to tie the game. 1-1. in the first, and William Werner scored late in the fourth. 107 Seniors Find Outlet For Nostalgia Craze In Production Of Cheaper By The Dozen” A( ABOVE) Judith Koch (Mother) and Michael Wolford (Father) are given some instructions on T how to play a scene by their director. Back in the days when the “horseless carriage” was a novelty, there were twelve red-haired Gilbreth children, and they had more fun than a traveling circus! Whenever their father took them for a ride in Foolish Carriage” — his Pierce Arrow — some pedestrian was sure to yell: How do you feed all those kids?” And Dad would reply: Well, you know, they come cheaper by the dozen!” Cheaper By The Dozen is a play of typically American humor based upon family life. Through the mist of years, two of the now grown-up children (Marjorie Weiss and Dan Lambert) relive events from their happy home life. They remember their childhood in seemingly disconnected episodes, which are really a series of character studies, especially of their father and his oddities — and he had a great many. Frank Gilbreth. Sr. (Michael Wolford) is a terrific efficiency expert, and it is his firm conviction that what works in the factory will work in the home. Despite his teenage daughters’ awakening interest in clothes, boys, and dates, he pushes ahead with better organization for his children. He puts up a chart for them to initial after completing each household chore, puts all questions (or almost all) dealing with family matters to the vote of a council, and uses a rug in the living room for an imaginary bathtub to demonstrate how to take a really time-and energy-saving bath. Someone once asked Dad what he wanted to save time for; what was he going to do with it. He answered. “For work, if you love that best. For education, for beauty, for art. for pleasure. For mumblety-peg — if that’s where your heart lies. While this provides the audience with uproarious humor, there is an imperative reason behind it. Dad has a heart condition which he’s keeping secret. He know he’s on borrowed time, and that’s why he is doing his best to make the family efficient. However, his daughters do not understand what is driving their father, nor does he in turn understand the changing interests of high school girls of the early 1920’s. So it is natural for Anne (Sharon Hetrick), the oldest, to rebel against Dad. She buys silk stockings and some flimsy little underthings (called teddies ), and wishes to date a cheerleader. Both Dad and Anne are miserable at this lack of communication. but at last Dad becomes aware of how much his daughters are growing up.
