'WO OLEY HIGH SCHOOL Sckoof syififorg The educational history of Oley begins with the French Huguenots, Quakers, and Ger- mans. These good people, in order to see their children prop- erly educated, began the first schools in their homes. The first Moravian school was built in 1742. After that followed various private or pay schools until Merkel's School, the first public one, was estab- lished on Iohn Clouser's land. In 1857 the Oley Academy was set up. the brick building in which it was housed still stand- ing in the town. The first high school was a two-story brick building. When this was destroyed in 1927. a need for a more modern struc- ture was felt and the present one erected.

we.. 415 0l QlfU0l Being the generation which shall provide the thinkers and planners who are so desperately needed to control the greatest physical force man has ever discovered,we have chosen to make the theme of our 1950 Olean the future of rapid change and revo- lutionary ideas which stands before us. Yes, we realize this to be our heritage. Great men of science have developed marvelous new things-the atom bomb, iet planes faster than sound, rockets which may someday carry passengers to the moon. But it is left to us. the generation following those men, to deal with these things so that they bring peace and prosperity to the world, not war and desolation. A race in ac- cumulating such weapons and building only upon the deadly uses of them can lead only to a third World War in which mankind could be wiped off the face of the earth. Therefore, we, the younger generation, must be wiser in the future years and develop the helpful side of these magical new discoveries. Each of us needs a strong character and stable personality to withstand the im- pact of these rapidly changing conditions, an alert mind to evaluate and solve the prob- lems life inevitably brings to us, a tolerant attitude toward his fellow men throughout the whole world, and the intelligence to lead others through safe channels to a peaceful and happy world. In these pages we shall not only show you the events of the past year but pic- ture for you some of our conceptions of the future. Although you may marvel at the streamlined world to come, it shall arrive, and we must be prepared for it. Undoubtedly the school shall be effected by it. We could dream of a day when classes will be very informal, with overstuffed chairs for all, personal drinking fountains, and a television set in every room-but that is iust a flight into fantasy. However, improved school fa- cilities are bound to be introduced. In this school we have received not only a formal education but valuable instru- tion in getting along with our fellowmen which will be useful to us in the future. Our symbol, the rocket ship, expresses this expectation of rapid changes. Thus, wide vistas will be revealed to us in the future, and we sincerely hope we can face them, not as a grim duty, but willingly, as a task that may promote happiness for ourselves and others. 6OllteI'lfJ Faculty -- page 5 Seniors - page 13 Underclassmen - page 29 Activities - page 35 Alumni - page 57 One
