Yes, we realize this to be our heritage. Great men of science have developed marvelous new things-the atom bomb, iet planes faster than sound, rockets which may someday carry passengers to the moon. But it is left to us. the generation following those men, to deal with these things so that they bring peace and prosperity to the world, not war and desolation. A race in ac- cumulating such weapons and building only upon the deadly uses of them can lead only to a third World War in which mankind could be wiped off the face of the earth. Therefore, we, the younger generation, must be wiser in the future years and develop the helpful side of these magical new discoveries. Each of us needs a strong character and stable personality to withstand the im- pact of these rapidly changing conditions, an alert mind to evaluate and solve the prob- lems life inevitably brings to us, a tolerant attitude toward his fellow men throughout the whole world, and the intelligence to lead others through safe channels to a peaceful and happy world. In these pages we shall not only show you the events of the past year but pic- ture for you some of our conceptions of the future. Although you may marvel at the streamlined world to come, it shall arrive, and we must be prepared for it. Undoubtedly the school shall be effected by it. We could dream of a day when classes will be very informal, with overstuffed chairs for all, personal drinking fountains, and a television set in every room-but that is iust a flight into fantasy. However, improved school fa- cilities are bound to be introduced. In this school we have received not only a formal education but valuable instru- tion in getting along with our fellowmen which will be useful to us in the future. Our symbol, the rocket ship, expresses this expectation of rapid changes. Thus, wide vistas will be revealed to us in the future, and we sincerely hope we can face them, not as a grim duty, but willingly, as a task that may promote happiness for ourselves and others. 6OllteI'lfJ Faculty -- page 5 Seniors - page 13 Underclassmen - page 29 Activities - page 35 Alumni - page 57 One 'WO OLEY HIGH SCHOOL Sckoof syififorg The educational history of Oley begins with the French Huguenots, Quakers, and Ger- mans. These good people, in order to see their children prop- erly educated, began the first schools in their homes. The first Moravian school was built in 1742. After that followed various private or pay schools until Merkel's School, the first public one, was estab- lished on Iohn Clouser's land. In 1857 the Oley Academy was set up. the brick building in which it was housed still stand- ing in the town. The first high school was a two-story brick building. When this was destroyed in 1927. a need for a more modern struc- ture was felt and the present one erected. l ma.. Wafer We sing to Oley High School, We make for thee a crown. Noble and strong. Rest on thy brow To thee with loyal hearts, Pride, honor, glory, love, We raise our song. Before thee bow. May your spirits never die, Swelling to I-leaven's high Nor your walls decay. Our praises ring. We will sing our praises, Pray that Oley High School Through endless days. Survives all things. --------OLEY HIGH SCHOOL eEZ5eJicafion Dear Class of 'Fiftyz You were born at the dawn of an era which has since been called the era of the common man. It is true that the era has been marred by a war, but it is as true that it has been stimulated by that war. That war may well serve to remind us, too, that in this, our era, great strides of social progress have been and are being taken -- and that such social progress is paced by the greatest nation the world has ever known. Provident grace has made you a part of that greatest nation - - that nation of cosmopolitan individuals whose unlim- ited initiative and energy has wrung endless new horizons from the world of L. Four WAYNE G. WESSNER the atom, in such recent months as your own high school days. As you take leave of your alma ma- ter, you have expressed, through this book, a zeal and yearning for the future -- and well you may, for you are the most richly blessed youth of the world. Unscathed by war, you bring to the future unblemished hope for even great- er progress. Yours is the heritage of democracy's, You're as good as I am. Yours is the opportunity of the land which represents the epitome of the great social faith that - - u The individual human being is of surpassing worth. The earth and human culture be- long to all men. Men can and should rule them- selves. The human mind can be trusted and should be set free. The method of peace is superior to that of war. Racial, cultural, and political mi- norities should be tolerated, respected, and valued. May provident grace continue to at- tend and bless your vibrant, youthful efforts as you ply your every talent, in places great and small, to the fur- ther uplifting of your fellowmen. In truth - - There is a destiny that makes us brothers. None goes his way alone. All that we send into the lives of others Comes back into our own. Your future will be a bright one if your guiding 1ight keeps leading you ever onward to greater achievements. M. D. Grim l President of School Board F ive 'ix 30 Me Clfaw 0 l950: Your graduation marks the first for the second half of our century. Your motto indicates your fitting goal- The future is our guiding light. Your efforts and your ideals have brought you success - - graduation. Congratula- tions, to each and every member of the class. May success and happiness be yours always. Fortunately, those who have gone before have charted many of the landmarks and milestones that give direction and breadth to our careers. Happier and more efficient years ahead result from a good start. It is impor- tant that we know and recognize our needs: namely, to develop our personality in the way we most desire and to resolve the many conflicts that arise in every-day living. Life itself is simple: it is man that makes it complicated. Man's intellect gives him many advantages, yet he is enmeshed in material things and is in a constant struggle with conflicting desires, with prejudices, with greed and ambition. To succeed he needs a definite goal, promoted by self-interest and seasoned by a sense of humor and of proportion. In short, we need to develop a way of life that leads us to happiness. To learn to interpret the signs of the times is our challenge. I know of no way of judging the future but by the past. We need to develop the ability to adjust ourselves to change. The lessons we learn from living with people to-day will be useful to-morrow. Ideologies differ, but let us always resolve to live the democratic way of life. You will be the leaders of to-morrow. Think creatively, act cooperatively, and assume responsibility, In the mean- time, there is work to be done, as there always will be. FREDERICK H. STAUFFER Oley, Pa. Muhlenberg College, Ph. B. This should be the most important decision in each person's life. Some wish to obtain additional education by attending colleges, business schools and other institutions. Others expect to work in industry. Some vocational students intend to start farming or work on farms. We, as students, are blessed with opportunities in selecting vocations. We are living in a very prosperous country, and each individual should know his aim before he leaves high school. In this way the individual can obtain the maximum education in the field in which he is interested. Through the guidance of the school faculty, and with experience as our best teacher, we have gained at least a portion of the knowledge necessary to carry on later life. To each classmate I wish frequent knockings of opportunity, a world at peace, and group and individual success. Sincerely, LeRoy Howard Class President Thirteen PAULINE D. The first year in school saw members of the class taking part in a play entitled The Three Bears. We continued our progress in the primary grades. In third grade the primary grades presented a play entitled Cindere1la. With much activity in the grades we were now ready for pro- motion to the intermediate grades. In fourth grade we assisted in the presentation of Tom Sawyer. The boys remember the fifth year in school by the line who witnessed the use of the paddle. Another feature of our intermediate years was the play We Want Mother. We were now promoted to a new phase in schooling, the junior high school. The arrival in junior high school presented more intricate problems to be solved. In eighth grade we presented a Thanksgiving program including The Courtship of Miles Standish and Aunt Adele Reduces. In ninth grade we were introduced into a new field of study, science. A feature of this school year was the presentation of the plays A Day for Truants and Second Honeymoon. The athletes had a chance to participate in varsity and junior varsity sports. ' The next step was promotion to the sophomore year of education. We now had a choice between the academic or vocational courses. We partici- pated in the operetta The Mikado and the play Her Fatal Beauty. The first Oley Valley Community Fair was held in this year. The agriculture students were each to exhibit in two departments. We helped in the athletic events which were a part of the activities at the fair. Our junior year saw many important activities. A play was presented entitled The Ghost of a Show. The music department featured the operetta Pirates of Penzance. The second Oley Valley Fair was held. A junior-senior reception was held to honor the seniors. We also participated in a public speaking contest. We entered our senior year and felt the need for deeper consideration of affairs. We needed earnest work to get money for the yearbook and class trip. Our first major undertaking was the senior cake and cider stand at the third annual Oley Valley Fair. Through class cooperation the stand was a financial success. We served chocolate milk and sold candy each day. The operetta H. M. S. Pinafore was a feature for us. The yearbook staff was busy each day. Debating interested some seniors. We began work on our class play Great Expectations. May soon approached. Through guidance class help, most pupils had their vocations planned. Commencement approached and we soon began reminiscing about our school days. We had reached a crossroad of life. It was for each individual to choose his road on which to travel, equipped with the education he or she had received in school. gzfganst f l Twenty-five Twenty-six gasses-Gmvgbs EQ? We, believing in your ability to use these wisely, sign the above promises on this twenty-eighth day of May, 1950 A.D. 4: Twenty-seven Twenty-eight gfarffi l 0l0 QC? As I board the jet plane in Africa for my four-hour trip to America, I glance briefly at the pilot and co-pilot. To my amazement, I see Kermit Snyder and Leon Burkhart. Kermit, the skilled pilot, assures me of my safety, while Leon, co-pilot, tells me about his lovely family back home. Stopping briefly in Paris, I admire the uniform of a WAVE, busy touring the shops. Surprisingly, I find it is Shirley Sittler. After reminiscing about old times, she enthusiastically describes the exclusive salon belonging to our former classmate, Ray Rothenberger. It seems that his famed model, Dorothy Clauser, is prospering also. At last we land in the U. S., and it's good to be back in civilization again. New York hasn't changed a bit. Since there is a two-hour interval before the plane takes off for Reading, I decide to cruise around the city. As I pause before the leader of the famed Hotel Rexington orchestra, I am sur- prised to see the familiar face of Ernest Whitaker. By the thunderous applause I gather that Ernest's trumpet playing is appreciated. I suddenly notice that his accompanist is Irene Bieber. On the way to the airport I find the prominent lawyer, Ralph Angstadt, chatting with Erma Hetrick, interior decorator, about the new house that he intends to build. I stop briefly to exchange words with them and find that Doris Yeager is Ralph's efficient secretary. The arrival of the plane forces me to bid them a hasty farewell. Finally we reach our destination, Reading. The bus to the country leaves in five hours, so I have plenty of spare time on my hands. Since many of my old classmates are working at the Dirkshire Mills, I decide to drop in on them. Here I am greeted warmly by Pauline Angstadt, Ioyce Garman, and Annie Moyer. They also advise me to visit Dorothy Hafer's office in town. It seems Dorothy is a popular decorator because of her originality. As I start for Dorothy's office, whom should I meet but Gerald Heist? Gerald, also in industry, is on his way to the same place. Anna Loeb, I learn, is secretary where Ierry works, and Irvin Manwiller puts in time at the same factory. As I continue wandering about the city, I notice that the two attendants at the Never-Fail Garage are Howard Young and Charles Miller. They inform me that Gene Correll is earning his livelihood as a machinist, and Nayland Rinker has become a sheet metalist who is lucky enough to have his own shop. I bid them good-day and continue my walk. Entering Boneray's Department Store, I am politely asked by a saleswoman whether she can help me. Looking up, I find it is Eleanor Wentzel. We both laugh about the coincidence, while Eleanor explains that she has been working here since graduation. Before leaving, I am lucky to bump, literally, that is, into Robert Franke. He is now technical engineer for the local broadcasting system. The day has passd pleasantly, and at last I am on my way home. Before I even slip out of my coat, I am sent to the store. Oh well-that's home! As is usually true in local stores, I receive more news about former classmates. Here Daniel Mathias runs the store, and many of my old school friends stop here too, I find. For instance, I see Arthur Mast sitting in a corner chatting with Iackie Keller, Roger Buch, and LeRoy Howard, all prospering Oley Valley farmers. He is explaining some of his latest experiments. Arthur has achieved the long title of D. H. I. A. Milk Tester. Almost an hour slips away while we recollect old times before I realize how late it now is. Eugene Schlegel, also a farmer, gallantly offers to give me a ride home. I anxiously ask him about my old pal, Mary Blaney, whom I somehow have always missed seeing during my travels. Eugene explains that Mary has risen to the top in the field of horticulture in Philadelphia. It's truly a grand feeling to be home again among old acquaintances. Seeing familiar sights and people is a welcme experience after having spent several years in Africa as a missionary. Then too, all these young men and women seem glad to see that member of the class of '50 who occupied the last seat in most classes and the last name of the class roll because her name was Mabel Zimmerman. The ample number of girls out for hockey afforded the opportunity to divide the team in- to a junior varsity and a senior varsity. Two practices a week were held throughout the season. The first game played with Boyertown on Sept. 28 even though it rained, brought a 2-1 victory for the Lynxettes. On Sept. 31, Hamburg played the Lynx- ettes as a feature of the Oley Valley Fair. The fighting spirit of the Oley players rewarded them with a 4-0 victory, the goals being scored by Dot Clauser and Dot Hafer. Then on Oct. 12, a royal battle took place with Wilson, ending in a defeat of 2-0. On Oct. 14, despite the rain and good com- petition Hamburg gave us, it was a clean game that resulted in a victory for the Lynx- ettes, 1-0. Traveling to Wilson on Oct. 19, we real- ized the battle was uphill. Struggling to the very end it seems as if the ball rolled down the hill into the goal lfor Wilson, of coursel, result- ing in another defeat for the Lynxettes. Then on Oct. 21, the Lynxettes clicked again after a scrappy game with Fleetwood and won 2-0. On Oct. 25, rain and cold did not postpone the game with Shillington. Though it rained and was slippery, this was voted, by team and coach, the best game of the season, the score standing at 1-0 in Shi11ington's favor. The fact that the deciding game with Fleet- wood on their field on Oct. 28 was the final game for five seniors didn't make the idea of losing to them, 2-0, pleasant, since we already knew we were jinxed to a .500 average. The meetings are held weekly, at which time discussions are held by the boys. The tail twister is an important member of the club, and he has an unusual job. He sits in the front of the room with a jar in his hand. When someone causes undue disturbance, puts his feet on chairs, or talks out of turn, he is fined a nickel. He must pay this fine to the tail twister. When he has reached the sum of fifteen cents, he then pays one cent for each fine thereafter. Shoot'em high: Pass'em low. Come on, Team, let's go! The Speak-O-Link, which was established in 1934, has won many high ratings for its excel- lent material. With the co-operation of the twenty nine members of the club, nine of whom are seniors. the club meets every Wednesday and every other Friday. Jalin The study of Latin is comparatively easy for anyone who knows his English. Declensions, cases, gender, vocabulary, etc., all tie in with work in English grammar. We have fun trying to adapt our- selves to ancient ideas and ways of thinking in studying old Roman and Greek ways, customs and cultures. germ fl ll Two years of German may be chosen as an elective in senior high. The first year is devoted mainly to German inflections and word study. Dur- ing the second year, students delve into more advanced grammar before they read L'Arrgiato and other interesting stories. This year the German II class presented in assembly a play portraying the life of Faust. Cf., WafAemaficJ This course begins theoretically in first grade, but comes into practical use about the start of junior high school. During the ensuing years we learn about V, R, and the forever-unknown X. The senior high years are spent learning algebra and plane and solid geometry, plus a half year of trigonometry. Almost all our other subjects are dependent on English. From grades nine to twelve, we deal with diagraming, sentence structure, parts of speech and other essentials of good grammar. Neither have spelling and vocabulary been neglected. Every year we read various stories and plays, many by Shakespeare. .Saosin f ea History classes are generally interesting on Monday, when current events are discussed. Other days we gain experience by speaking before the class when reciting on appointed topics. These topics come from civics, the study of Our United States, On The Road to Civilization and Prob- lems in American Democracy in grades nine to twelve, respectively. .Stfence With electrons, protons and physics problems swimming in our brains, we completed our science courses.
