GERTRUDE OLIVER, giver of knowledge, unceasing in effort, respected by all, we the Class of 1959, proudly dedicate this 1959 edition of the Olean High School Congress to you for the invaluable years of service you have given us. x' f 1 HIM 4 v . fi . ,fi '-u I , . .5 - . Standing: Wm. Nixdorf, Glenn A. Reitz, Arthur E. Yahn. My dear Seniors: On this graduation day, you have achieved a good High School Education. In addition to your academic achievements, many of you have received glory in athletic participation, school plays, activity in clubs, etc. Your participation here has established close relationships be- tween the members of this class that will ever be a source of happy recollection. May I congratulate you on your splendid accomplishments and wish you a prosperous future abundant in health and happiness. Sincerely, Thomas R. Olson, President Board of Education 6 My dear Seniors: Every crisis creates its leaders. Every age takes on its own peculiar marks of identification. In a global sense, the ideological conflict that has divided the world into an East and a West, continues to cast its ominous and ugly shadow across the earth. The atomic age, while yet in its infancy, is tem- porarily eclipsed by the age of Sputnik. It has been your unique privilege to secure your high school education in this atmosphere of conflict and change. The leadership that shall determine our national and individual destinies is soon to be placed in your hands. If you, the Class of 1959, are representative of the quality of youth throughout America, and if your record to date is an index to your future achieve- ment, then I have faith that the force of human decency, freedom, and progress will prevail. To each and everyone of you, my every good wish for success and happiness both temporal and spirit- ual. Sincerely, W. Cecil Davis Superintendent of Schools Mr. W. Cecil Davis Superintendent of Schools Mr. Harold McManus Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Snyder Secretary M. Wesley Smith Principal Seniors, as a class, you have had a broader educa- tional experience than any other class graduated from the Olean High School-such is the nature of our times. It has been diflicult to select and then provide you with what seemed to be the best experiences to prepare you to enter a rather troubled world, a world that needs the courage and hope of youth. Each successive group of graduates released from our school adds just a little more to the matrix of our society-weaves into it a little more strength and stability. Class of 1959, this is a part of your destiny. May you be happy in the knowledge and that you now become creative elements in a new era of hope and progress. M. Wesley Smith Principal Miss Elizabeth Herzog Mr. john Wallace Vice-Principal Director of Pupil Personnel Service This year the Guidance department, in new, larger quarters, has been counseling all the students. Mr. Marvin Adams has given much assistance to the boys, as Miss Karl has to the girls. In addition to giving advice on schedules, colleges, and scholarships, this department has supervised many tests. Mr. Marvin Adams Boy's Guidance Counselor , .
