Y. She then came back to Olean before leav- ing for IN'ashington, D. C., where she worked three years as a clerk in the Treasury Depart- ment. As this job proved very dull to our Miss Casey, she changed the routine by going all the way to the Philippine Islands to teach English at San Franando CLa Ifnionl. After three years of this, Miss Casey returned to Olean and re- sumed teaching in the Olean elementary schools, at the same time earning her B.A. degree at St. Bona's. In 1929 Miss Casey began teaching English and Spanish at Olean High where she has con- tinued to teach until this September of 1952. Miss Casey now plans to spend her leisure hours either at home in her library, gardening, or traveling about the country. DEDICATION MISS LULA HILL Miss LULA HILL, the friendly teacher who formerly resided in room 306 where she taught chemistry, is now resting at Portville. After graduating from Portville High and later, Alfred University, Bliss Hill spent two years at YN'ateryille, N. Y., three years at Deposit, N. Y., and one year at Hancock, N. Y., teaching science. In 1924, Miss Hill began teaching physics and chemistry at Olean High School until the new building was built. At this time she taught only chemistry until September of 1952, when she retired. lyliss Hill says that although most of her life has been devoted to the cultural development of tomorrow's leaders, she loved every minute of it, and sincerely wishes that she were still able to continue teaching. al' N I YW' IN RECOGNITION Sackett Scholarship Fund A 310,000 Scholarship Fund to help Olean High School graduates secure a college education has been set up by Herbert L. Sackett, fomier high school principal. The fund, to be known as the Sackett Scholarship Fund, was accepted by the Board of Education on Tuesday night. In- come from the'fund will be awarded annually in the fonn of a scholarship to a senior or graduate of the school who intends to get a college degree. According to the terms of the grant of the fund to the Board, the annual award will be made by a committee consisting of the high school principal, vice-principal and an officer of the Exchange National Bank of Olean. The money has been deposited in that bank as a trust fund, under the administration of J. Mon- roe Hodges, vice-president and trust oflicer. The award will be made on the basis of the students' character, scholastic ability, promise of future usefulness to society, services rendered to the school in worthy scholastic activities, and financial need. The award will be made annually at the close of each school year and announced at each com- mencement. Payments to the student receiving the scholarship will be made in approximately equal installments of the net income realized to the preceding September 1. It is expected that the trust fund will yield upwards of S400 each year. Mr. Sackett served as principal of the high school from 1917 to 1946, when he retired. He had retired previously, in 1943, but was called back in 1944 when the present principal, Ernest H. Hoeldtke, was called into the Navy. A native of Smith's Mills, New York, near Forestville, Chautauqua County, Mr. Sackett received his Master's Degree and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Brown University. He served as principal of high schools in Dunkirk, New York and Lewiston, Montana before com- ing to Olean. While he was principal, he was president of the State High School Principals Association, and he originated and developed the Athletic Activities Protection Plan, which writes insur- ance against injuries for students in interscholas- tic and intramural sports. three HERBERT L. SACKETT PRINCIPAL, OLEAN HIGH Scrroor., 1917 46 He was President of the Kiwanis Club, Presi- dent of the Little Theater Guild, was active in Red Cross and Boy Scouts and was president of the Torch Club. At present, he is a field secretary of the Torch International. The Torch Club is a dinner dis- cussion club for professional men. Of the 82 such groups in Canada and the 23 in the United States, Mr. Sackett organized 24. In his earlier years, he traveled extensively in Europe, Mexico, and this country. During World War II, he manned an Airplane Spotting Sta- tion in Olean, and after his retirement in 1946, he was awarded a govemmental citation for his war services. ' , To The Seniors In the world of which we find ourselves a part, the well-educated person has become a necessity. The program of studies pursued, the subject matter absorbed, the books read, and the etlort expended do not necessarily combine to produce the product we seek. It is the spirit with which these numerous and sometimes tedious assignments are accomplished which adds char- acter to this well-informed being. As one thinks in his heart so he becomes: either he loves his fellow men and gives generously to them, or he practices an existence of mental frugality, deny- ing to others the opportunity to share the joys and successes of life. In the final analysis it mat- ters not so much what he has studied, but how he has applied himself, and the attitude with which he has completed the task. ERNEST H. HOELDTKE, Principal ADMINISTRATION My dear Seniors, Four years ago the coveted goal of gradua- tion seemed quite remote. Today, I congratulate you on achieving this important objective. Future rewards and recognitions, I am sure, will never dull the happy memories of your years at Olean High School, and these, I trust, may be many. To each and every member of the Class of 1953, I extend cordial greetings and every good wish. Sincerely yours, W. LIBRARY AIDES u-w..m...,..--Q THE LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club consists of pupils who volunteer their services as library aids. These library aids help with circulation routine book preparation references and other library work During Book Week this year the use of a new pin with the words library stafi' was introduced. This pin is to be worn to designate library aids. Several former Olean High library aids are now working in college libraries and many are studying to become librarians.
