Peterson, author of such stimulating novel as, 'For Whom the Horn Fonked' and 'From There to the Drugstore' Then came a quick flick of my tuner and he was enduring the 2 onles of channel 5 Here, through a cloud of dust he saw Shiftless' Mullin SPUPP1nS his faithful rotrod on in the interests of law, order, and gravel spreading After watching this modern western melo drama for exactly 55 and 3 4 seconds, another quick flick of my channel selector brought us to charnel 4 and the heart rending episode of 'Older Brother , starring none other than that famous husband ard wife team, T Hugh De Yarman and his famous actrea wife Janet Miller This is the true story of Hugh and Janet in their e rliex days when he was a profess lonal pickle packer This was followed by a tube jarring change to channel 5 Here the distinguished president of Sing Sirg U , Dr Brant Abrahamson was lecturing on the prob lem of absenteeism in our public schools Fifteen seconds later I was tuned to channel 6 and my owner wa watching 'Wild Red Peterson and 'Horrible Helen Ol on After a glimpse of this brawl and one good look at the contestants, my owner was so scared trat he could hardly change to channe 7 There, the Marilyn Tindlll show, 'Prison to Prison was in progress This 1 the show on wkich Miss Tindill inter views notorious criminals from their prison cells The guest celebrity was 6534l29, who is called 6 by 9 by her closest friends She was known during her earlier life as 'Mona the Menace' Ahlsclager She said that her ambition was to be the first per on to serve out a 99 year term, which she re ceived for hunting pedestrians out of season M owner was not prepared for the hock of seeing 'The We ace on my screen When he saw it, he ment completely berserk Trying to run away from this terrifying spectacle, he bashed his head into my picture tube, ruining thirteen tubes in the pro- cess Yes, I was a television set, The men wko came and pulled my owner's head from my chassis weren't TV repairmen They wore white coats and they tookhim to a padded cell I was the first of these 57 million sets dumped into the Grand Canyon by friends of people who had watched TV that fateful evening We are a grim memorial to those nine, now departed people who wrecked the TV industry 5 - 45 x49 9? ,ui X mga lj , , , A we . - X A , , II l - I O ' O 'Greatest Fights of the Century' with the battle between w Q n. - A 1 . n n S y .- 3 s Q. M N The Story Qz: No matter how hard it was to make ends meet, Poppy and Mother Rose could never say 'no' to a homeless child, and in the Pumpkin Shell, their tiny summer cottage by the ocean, it was often hard to tell their own children from the strangers they took under their wing But, Janey, their latest aquisition, was somewhat of a problem They had promised the Home to keep her for two weeks and here it was the day before she was to go back, and still she acted like a stranger a frald to go into the water with the others ard most scared of her Own shadow It wasn't that Janey didn't want to belong she just d1dn't know how Then Miss Winston, from the Home, arrives a day earlier to take Janey back with her Janey rebels She doesn't want to go The rest of the children take a vote they always decide such matters and they decide that Janey can stay They have no sooner shifted the sleeping quarters around to make room for her, when Jimmy John a nother unfortunate- who had been waiting out in Miss Win ton's car, comes in Ji my John is not only a problem child but wears braces on his legs No one had ever been kind to Jimmy John before, and Mother's heart goes out to the boy Before she herself realizes it, Jimmy John is taken into the ever growing family and they shift a gain to make room Tren in the midst of their hectic but nappy exis tance, tragedy strikes Poppy, who has been overworking, succumbs to a heart attack Mother's real and adopted family rally 'round and pitch in to keep the Pumpkin Shell going It's not easy, for Joey is starting his first year at medical school in the fall, and Mother's rejection slips from her writing haNe been coming in wdth alarming re gularlty lhen Joey realizes how tough things are for the family, he decides to give up medical school and accepts a job but Mother puts her foot down on that idea Meanwhile Ji my John has been making re markable strides Several operations which have caused the drastic drain on the family income -enable him to walk with hardly a trace of a limp. Finally, lother decides the only solution to their financial problems is to sell the Pumpkin Shell. When Jinmy John overlears Mother and Hrs. Biddle discussing the sale, and realize- that the bills for his operations make it necessary to sell the Pumpkin Shell, he runs away. But the kids fird him and bring him back. Then like a sudden burst of sunshine. fortune smiles upon the Pumpkin,Shell and all because of Jimmy John. 11 459371 1,94 'X 'D 'nik se J l I X1 lk 86. 9- 1 -fc-..
