On January 19, 1994 OLDENDORF departed San Diego for a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf. lt was to be six months of hard work and long hours broken only by occasional periods of rest and relaxation. Of the 180 days the ship was gone, an amazing 81 'Vo or 145 days were spent at sea. TEAM OLY spent the transit to Hawaii training and never stopped. We generally had two general quarters per week, fired the guns once per week, had one undenrvay replenishment per week lsometimes twol, and conducted countless other training evolutions during our time at sea. Even after we left the Gulf and the anticipation grew for our homecoming, the training intensified due to our detour to Korea. OLY left San Diego with two SH-60B helicopters, their crews and support teams from HSL 45 detachment 6. After stops in Hawaii, an eight-hour visit to Guam, visits to Singapore and Phuket, the ship entered the Arabian Gulf on March 5. During our three month stay in the Gulf we conducted exercises with the Kuwaitis, boarded 9 merchants in and outbound to Iraq during enforcement of United Nations sanctions against that country, and visited Kuwait, Dubai, and Bahrain twice each. For two days OLY served as contingency flagship for Vice Admiral Katz, COMUSNAVCENT, an event that went off without a hitch. On the way home, OLY visited Hong Kong, Pusan, Yokosuka, and again Hawaii. ln the end however, it all proved to be worth it. Not only was the ship more prepared than any of our companion vessels, it was by far the most well kept. Other commanding officers told Cdr. Bouchard they could not believe how good OLDENDOBF looked upon returning from deployment. One admiral even asked another CO why his ship, which had been in San Diego the last six months, did not look as good as OLDENDOBF. The deployment was even completed without a liberty incident, a significant achievement for having spent so much time at sea and having numerous port calls in the Middle and Far East.
