CLASS HISTORY On an autumn day in 1936, the class of 'h8 timidly entered the doors of education at various schools. Here at Old Town, Carolyn, Ruth, Joan, Beulah, and Martha, along with a number of other students, learned their ABC's with Mrs. Trivette as their teacher. How well I remember, even across all the years, how thrilled we were about a class picnic held on the last day of that year. Our second year was spent with Miss Kapp as teacher. How hard it was for us to learn addition and Subtraction, how many tears we shed, and how loud were our lamentations! But with the passing of time we finally master- ed even arithmetic, and advanced to the next grade with flying colors. In the third grade Mrs. Yarbrough increased our knowledge of readin’, writin’, and 'rithmetic so much that the members of the scholastic team won the honor of being the smartest in the county. This winnin team was com- posed of J. W. James, Jr., Lucy Leake, and Martha Hunter. uring the year, the girls made doll dresses which we entered in a contest. I don't believe our efforts were appreciated though, for if we won any prizes I can't re- member them. While in the fourth and fifth grades, we acquired some new classmates. Among them were Helen Phillips, Mamie Wooters, and Wiley Jones. During our sixth year, we occupied a room in the basement of the high school. Mrs. Furches, our teacher, made curtains and matching chair backs, which added considerably to the appearance of the room. Arlis Vernon joined our class that year. I did not suspect then that during his junior and senior years he would become the toast of the school--leading the Panthers to countless victories, and covering school and self with glory. In the seventh year we must have been more troublesome than in previous grades, for I remember that the entire class made such low conduct grades one quarter that our teacher was ashamed of them and would not record them on our report cards. However, we recovered from this in time to be the little eighth grade angels. Barbara Belton and Mary Davis Jones were new members of the class. 4t first, changing classes was a great delight to us, but in the course of a year it became just routine. We were two large classes, when brimming with joy and self-assurance, ne began our freshman year. Frank Hauser, Jo Pfaff, Syvileen Blankenship, Opal Wilson, Pauline wishon, Janet Athan, and Julia Conrad were among the Vienna students whom we welcomed. Most of us studied hard, especially in algebra, but nothing outstanding was done in other activities, or that one either as I recall it. By the time we reached the tenth grade, Mary Swaim and Dolores Colbert had brought a bit of excitement and novelty by entering our class. We could hardly wait to be juniors, but when the time arrived our orig- inal fifty-two had shrunk to an enrollment of twenty. The entire class, with the exception of Wiley, took the commercial course. The Junior-Senior banquet, held May 10, 1947, at the Cavalier Grill, was the greatest thrill of our lives up to that time. The colored crepe paper, the gorgeous arrays of flowers,. and the multi-colored gowns of the girls transformed the grill into a scene of rare beauty. The program brought roars of laughter from everyone, and the entire banquet proved a success, PANT a URE MEE er ints HALA Pl % D) rete Mey Af 3153 Nyc yaoren tAl9 = fen ¢ 7. in La 2 ag aoa) ads Raetin MSBRRe Ber 38 EN Gat ,OFes uk oh Bante | ’ t , Tel osaNe £3op s+ abt aoe 4 dale gnols _ na eee Cae geives Reo% agus BELO Te owe? 220 ws otek Sedt us eoaeri yl) ALe BeEY CRA Lene eazevl _ pdne bute xohae Yo . nedoait ae SoC LiZSS WOO bBo bo Ale OG NTE mors. eedanaed Eb Eker ‘wo, TOE ae i “eb cee Bi ae Sieh eien.g Beast ® tyxotm € ine . ’ y 44 «er Se : aD gl iw. At long last we reached the height of our dreams--vwe were seniors! This last year we have worked harder than ever before to get all the educa- tion possible. Although we hope to have several of our classmates take the advantage of a college education most of us plan to test our ability in the vocation of our choice. We have enjoyed to the full all the delights of our senior year. sure- ly no other Junior-Senior banquet was ever so lovely as the one the. juniors prepared for us this year! Surely no other class ever had so much fun re- hearsing the senior play as we had! we are very grateful to our parents for providing us with the opportu- nity to receive an education, and to all our teachers for their patience and guidance. In spite of their efforts to make us dignified and cultured, have become light-hearted, and rather talkative (we think we are vivacious), bubbling over with zest for living! we merely To Mrs. Newman, our senior teacher, we express sincerest thanks for making this our happiest year. The sum of the interior angles of a polygon ofn sides is (n-2) straight angles. Mr. Wood's voice became more and more monotonous, but I tried to arouse myself and absorb some of the geometry truths which he so tirelessly attempted to instill into our listless brains. If three or more parallels intercept---- , he continued. his voice wee rose in competition with a newly awakened insect which presistently buzzed - £9 around my cerebellun. BuzzZ-zZ-z-2, went the insect, and as the slumber ¥Y ase a voice of Mr. Wood mingled with the drowsy buzzing sound, 1 again ozed. The classroom seemed to change. There were no uncomfortable seats with desks piled high with books in untidy array. Instead, there were comforta- ble plush and plastic chairs arranged behind plastic tables facing a screen. Through an opening at the back of the room could be seen part of a projector and the sound apparatus of a futuristic movie machine. Arlis Vernon, president of the class of 1948, at 01d Town, rose and ex- plained, Since our class has been so widely scattered, the few of us who have remained near the Tri-city (01d Town-Winston-Selem) have decided it would be unwise to attempt a homecoming. Instead, we have contacted all members and asked them to send us a record on film of their everyday life M0 and work. This film in turn will be sent to each class member. AS Arlis pushed a button conveniently placed on the table in front of him Ma and handsome shades silently slid over the plastic windows, shutting out the light and leaving the room in a restful semi-darkness. He pushed another button. The screen lit up and the movie was on. There before our eyes, heralded by beautiful music, were three lovely ladies clad in stunning plastic evening gowns, designed by the famous de- Gy) Signer Joan Adams. The three were Jo Ffaff at the piano, with Upal wilson rs and Julia Conrad furnishing the tonsorial calisthenics. they were singing f to us, their classmates, Should auld Acquaintance Be Forgot. YTheir suc- cessful team is known from coast to coast. The Treacherous Trio, they Ay call themselves. The music faded and we found ourselves gazing at the sandy beach at Ocean View, Virginia. Hello, everybody, exclaimed a merry voice from a COG) lady on the sand, I hope all of you are as happy as 1 am. hkeet the gung. PEATE: This is friend husband and Junior. We recognized Beulah Barber with her contented family. smid their laughter, and the splashing of the waves, the scene changed. The scene moved to the stately room where Congress is in session. We see our illustrious Syvileen leaving the assembly hall where she has just put up a victorious battle for higher education and more adequate food pro- A grams for the children of our world. Fes { We shiver as the scene carries us to the frozen north. But Alaska sks fails to intimidate Martha and -her missionary husband. We see them gliding through the snow on snow shoes, and Martha pauses long enough to pitch a snow ball in the direction of the camera. Through the courtesy of Baser en Voneuetton. aa Sone the theaters in our Tri-City, we are to be shown a preview of Janet Athan's latest picture, entitled Prehistoric Old Town,’ written by that sensational arthoress Dolores Colbert. After the preview, the screen pictured an imposing building, on the steps of which, a sweet, motherly lady soothes a hurt child. Over the spacious lawn are children here and children there, here, there, everywhere. The lady, whom we recognize as Helen, turns and smiles, Hello there, class- mates. How is the world treating you? Now, I'm not the old lady who lives in the shoe. Only two of these children are mine, but my husband and I have charge of the orphanage and indeed we live a wery busy and happy life. Her beaming face confirmed her words. The gray walls of a prison rose before us. Oh, no, there is not one of us who has come to this! But wait. We follow the steps of the guard who is showing a charming, well-poised lady to a cell. A young boy with sunken cheeks and haggard eyes gazes listlessly through the bars until the lady Speaks. My boy, as governor of this state, I personally am bringing you a full pardon, and am arranging for you to be transferred to an institution where you will receive psycopathic treatment, and training to warrant your having another chance in society. The grateful eyes of the boy follow the lady as she turns to leave. And who is this gracious lady? None other than Mamie. Mamie, who had gained the confidence and respect of the people to the extent that she won in her race for the office of governor by vast ma- jority. The picture on the screen moves on. Can this be the school lunch room we now see? Mary Davis stands behind a counter on which are arranged clas- sified, sterilized, artistic, cut glass jars containing tablets in pastel shades. She hastens to explain, You understand, classmates, pots, pans, dishes, and penurious meals are now obselete. The students of today are given food tablets at specified intervals to suit their specified needs, not Only their physical, but also their mental requirements. For instance, if One student excells in English and fails in geometry, then other tablets are reduced and he is given one which will stimulate his mental ability to as- Similate geometry. (Oh, that we might have had a gallon or so shorthand tablets in Miss Ivey's class!) apples, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, rises the voice of arlis Vernon as the screen portrays him pushing his fruit cart from corner to corner of the busy thoroughfare surrounding Old Town School. He has taken time off, however, from his pushing business affairs to view the films of his former Classmates. Having heard that Barbara Belton, after studying medicine oerself, had married a famous surgeon, we are not surprised when on the screen we see her standing opposite her husband in an operating room in Jack Popkins' Great hospital. At a Silent nod from her husband, Barbura slipped outside the door to bring us a greeting. Hello, there, J hope you are all happy and enjoying the best of health, but if you are not and need any grafting, ampu- tations, or operations, come on up and we'll give you a cut-rate. With a saucy smile she then returns to her work. A distinct odor of gardenias filled the room. Not only do these films of the future produce sound effects, but also convey odors as well. Ah! There is the origin of this delightful odor. Between two extremely modern and well-kept homes runs a hedge of improved, weather resistant, ever-bloom- ing gardenias. Mary and Ruth emerge from their respective homes and meet at the hedge. How are the children's measles? inquires Mary. at Se a wide ah 7 _ ans) Oh, practically over, thanks to the fast effectiveness of the new ser- um, answers Ruth. Their father is staying with them while 1 go to see the class film tomorrow. Splendid! exclaims Mary, heir father is flying with the two boys for a day's fishing in Florida so I shall g0 with you. You know, it seems that you. aArlis, Wiley, and I are the only ones who have remuined in Sight of the old school. Again the scene changes. Who is the shabby, ill-shaven, smudged in- dividual emerging from under a dilapidated four- wheeled concoction that had once been called a car? 1 could not believe my eyes, but there I was--wiley Jones--president of the great Used and Abused Escalators Inc. caught in such a disgraceful and undignified pose. Evidently the good wife had taken the pictures while I was working on Junior's jalopy, and had, unknown to me, given them to Arlis. As the scene ended, I sprang to my feet to defend myself, but as 1 did, a pair of pliers’ slipped from my pocket and hit the tile floor with a clank , so amid the giggles of Mary, Ruth, and Mary Davis, and a loud “haw- haw from Arlis, I sat down without a word. On the screen before us we beheld a gorgeous exotic castle. In a cir- cumlotive mode we had learned that Pauline had grown weary of the prosaic life of a model, and had entered into wedded bliss with Count Do-nil. From a chaise-lounge in her elegant drawing room the countess greeted us in a most lackadaisical manner. Bonjou, mes amis, Ecrivez-moi, s'l vous plait. With her impressive hands she threw us an ethereal kiss--and was gone. Down a glazed highway sped Frank Hauser. He was manipulating a minute atomic contraption bearing the combined characteristics of a harassed hare and a fallacious falcon, now in the air, now on the ground. He stopped as a peculiar plane soared noiselessly overhead. After glancing at a watchlike instrument, he looked up--then down, as if measuring distance, then quickly drew his bazooka-like gun from his Side, aimed, and with unerring accura- cy pinned an air-traffic tag on the wing of the offending plane. altitude one foot too low, he explained ina cultured voice and perfect English. AS air-officer, it is my duty and privilige to see that these lanes are Kept clear for small traffic and sky scooters. No puerilities or satanic virtues in this distinguished and dependable officer. (Frank, we are proud of you!) He pressed a button and the con- trivance rose from the ground, soaring until the configuration was lost in the ozone. That was the last of the film and as we started to leave, Mrs. Newman hurried into the room. Oh, dear, JI am so sorry I was unable to be with you, but there was a meeting of the P. T. A. in regard to replacing this ut- terly disgraceful-air-conditioning system. Do please let me have the film before it is sent off. We follow her through the plastic door, down the plastic halls, to the plastic steps where we will await our plastic cars to carry us to our plas- tic homes. Oh, what a difference on the outside of our school! A magnifi- cent structure has replaced the makeshift crude brick heap of '48. The grounds are methodically and scientifically laid out for Supervised recrea- tion and exercise, there are individual hangers for the radar controlled safety flying sleds used by the students. Gone forever are the ancient, un- Sightly, orange colored, metal, mechanical monstrocities which we knew as school busses. I was conscious of a sharp stinging sensation on my ear. Again that buzzing sound. Faintly Mr. Wood's voice reached me as he shook me. wiley, wake upt The next time you go to sleep in my class I'll let that wasp sting you. It haa!
