FLIGHT Millstone 1980 Old Saybrook High School Old Saybrook, Connecticut Bye, bye babe it's been a sweet love though this feeling I can't change. But please don't take it so badly, 'cause lord knows I'm to blame. If I stay here with you now things just couldn't be the same, Cause I'm as free as a bird now, and this bird you can not change . . . and this bird you can not change' . . Lord, knows I can't change. -Lynyrd Skynyrd- tfvjd ,ff E, , fi' W, 3 Q I iv! J ' Dedication We, the Class of 1980, Have carefully and honestly chosen the person most deserving of our Millstone dedication. We feel our dedication is very meaningful and we are proud to present it to a person who has contributed the most to our class. We have chosen a person who respects us as individuals - not just as students. We have chosen a person who is a very close friend and has gone beyond being a teacher. We have chosen a person who truly deserves this dedication. We shall always remember you . . . Thankyou.. Mrs. Marie Hobbes l 3 :IQ .- ,fi It J 4 .1 - ,, I r ,-ef --bxgjitfizkt Y if -. . We have had our successes and our failures - we have produced champions and have fallen short in other endeavors. This is a part of life. One of the true measures of success in your life will be how you are able to handle the ups and downs you face. Hopefully, the time you spent at Old Saybrook Senior High School has helped develop attitudes and skills which will make your life a bit easier. With the help of advisor Mr. Paul Smith the class of 1980 began raising money by selling popcorn and candied apples at football games. Then in the next two years, under the direction of Mrs. Marie Hobbes, the class of 1980 pulled together through fund raisers - such as car washes, popcorn sales at football games, and dances, so that future class events would be enjoyable and successful. During the sophomore year the class went to Banner Lodge, where a host of activities were provided. Then in May of our junior year a very successful Junior Prom was held at the Niantic Travel Lodge, where class members danced to the music of Home Sick John O'Leary. The Senior year started off well with help from a new advisor, Mr. Jim Barnes. The first fund raiser was a magazine drive which brought in enough funds so that the class could sponsor the Christmas Ball. After months of planning and long hours of hard work the gym was transformed into a winter wonderland . . . snowflakes and all. The class also sponsored a concert featuring Fountain Head on March 15. Then for their final activities the seniors went on a class trip and held a very enjoyable senior banquet. For the past two years the Class of 1980 has retained the Field Day Award under their winning slogan: The Senior class is super bad The biggest class you ever had And if you think that you're the best You'll have to put us to the test. The Old Saybrook girls' junior varsity field hockey team had a fine season this year, with a record of 6-4-2. The attacking defense allowed only five goals, while the explosive offense scored a total of 23 goals. Mrs. Splain can look forward to having some excellent players join her already talented varsity squad. Athletes Prayer Dear Lord Help me be a good sport in his game of life. I donit ask for any easy place in this line up. Play me where you need me. If all the tough players come my way, I thank you for your confidence in me. Help me to accept the bad breaks as part of the game, and to always play by the rules. Finally Lord, if things go against me and I am benched for being hurt, or someone is playing better, please help me to accept this as part of the game too. Keep me from whimpering or squealing that I was framed or got a raw deal. And when I finish the final play and the sixty minutes are up, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to know that I played as well as I could and that I didn't let you or the team down. 5 fs X fi I mf 1 b 'x . 'Sm Si X C Q ,.1 . y. 9 ' sh 4 V- 'X L 5 b W S! X' ' 5 R 'F .. Leading the way to a 10-4-1 season were senior co-captains Paul Mosca and Colin Delaney. Mosca and Delaney also led the Ram Harriers to a seventh-place finish in the state with 3rd and 16th place finishes, respectively. Junior Ian Delaney, on occasion Saybrook's number one runner, led a strong pack which included junior Kelly LaBombard and freshman Aaron Anderson. For the first time in years, the Ram Harriers had strength in numbers. Junior Rick Harrington and sophomore Pat Millen were backed by Joe Fayan, Ed Bushnell, Kevin Kearns and Chris Roscoe. The Rams lose only two to graduation, however, Paul Mosca and Colin Delaney will be greatly missed. They were both All-Shoreline selections and the two best runners Coach Walt Flynn has worked with in his tenure in Old Saybrook. 1 lx. if 123- ' N Q .. K. S . The 1979-80 school term has been a busy year for the members of the Corinthian Sailing Club. In November many Sailing Club members at- tended a three day seminar at Mystic Seaport. During the day we toured the Seaport and at night we slept aboard the Joseph Conrad . Those who attended got to try everything from sewing sails to rowing Purse-Seine boats. Though it was snowing and very cold everyone had a terrific time. This year on the club's fall cruise, the group sailed to Seldon's Creek. With a fleet of five boats, fair winds and warm weather, the cruise became quite a success. The cruise gave all a chance to develop their skills as sailors by doing everything from trimming the sails to watching the tiller. Later on in the year the Sailing Club held a Student-Faculty basketball game and a candy bar sale. With the money earned the club painted their boats and had one final cruise. The Sailing Club would like to extend many thanks to our fearless leader Capt. Al Wilson for all his help and guidance throughout this hectic year. We have approximately 40 active members who have worked hard to make the year a success. We are very priveleged to have two foreign students with us this year for the first time, Ulf Ellstrom from Sweden and Bertrand Schautz from Switzerland. There were several returnees this year also, Trish O'Donnell who spent six months in California, Karen Butler spent a summer in Greece, Peg Finch spent a year in Australia, and Bob Hartt who spent a year in Argentina. We sent Laura Demas to Brazil, who was our only exchange student this year. lt is not only the club's responsibility to send students to foreign lands, we also have many social activities. A few of our activities this year included parties, and two trips to restaurants in New Haven, Viva Zapata and Basel's. A few of our money-earning projects were our annual hotdog stand at the football games and selling calendars. Finally we would like to thank Mrs. Brunschwig and Miss Demikat, our devoted advisors.
