The 1979 Millstone ls Best Ever As Editor of the 1979 Millstone, I have come to realize that a yearbook doesn't appear with the snap of a finger. Producing a book that is both appealing and interesting to its readers takes many long hours, and with only a handful of people who did all of the work, the hours seemed much longer. I would like to give a special thanks to Judy Shultz, Dave Pallin, Victor Wright, Robin Jendzejec, Len DiBella, Hilary Addis, Laura Learned, and Bonnie Backlund who have given many selfless hours into the making of this book. Also, I would like to thank Mr. Leo Estes who came to the rescue of our Millstone. l It took a lot of hard work, and I hope you enjoy the book. Good Luck, Lisa Day EDITOR- IN-CHIEF t, VM li- a-f KXY 't'A 3 ,iit ,Q ' . xs Q . ,.. :ai E 1 W 5 .V N, 4 OH whats the matter now? You've heard him say it alot, about everything. He didn't sound discouraged, just a humorous acceptance of high school life. We, as the class of 1979, had a problem in that sophomore year. We were alone- no advisor. Ultimately, this mathematical genius with an outlandish wit adopted us. First were the class rings, and then who could forget the Junior Prom? In between the privilege negotiations, the fund- raisers, and the Field Days, he was always there being our salvation, usually throwing in a joke or two. A man who backed our class and each of us. He believed in us even when we refused. He pulled and prompted us through every day. In conclusion, we, the class of nineteen hundred and seventy-nine, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Joseph Z. Huchla, to us an advisor, to you a teacher, but to all a good friend. 1979 Millstone Dedication J..Z. Huchla 2 eg Q . Q E 2 3 f .,. -1' i fg e . ff? ' ff afar, . Principal Arthur Myjak Enjoys First Year at O S H.S. When the principal of a school finds himself with three fewer years exper- ience than his seniors, there may be obstacles to overcome. Mr. Arthur Myjak has brought a sincere interest in his staff and his students to our school and helped generate a renewed spirit at O.S.H.S. Even though we have not really gotten to know you, Mr. Myjak, we thank you and wish you good luck while in Old Saybrook. The Class of 1979 'wc X5 Principal's Message To Class Of 1979 Your graduation from Old Saybrook Senior High School signals both an end and a beginning. First, it marks the end of a period of extreme academic, social and physical growth, and a time characterized by people making decisions for you. Secondly, it marks the beginning of a time when the decisions made -that effect your lives - are going to be yours more than anyone else's. The wisdom you exercise in making these decisions will determine whether you, in fact, live or exist in this complicated world. At this time, I'd like to congratulate The Class of 1979 on its past accomplishments. It is also my hope fwhich I'm sure is shared by the staffj that each member of the class will have much success in ,the future. Cheerleading is not a sport measured by wins and losses, however, in everyone of our hearts there exists a win - loss record. Every poster torn down, sneering comment, or every cheerleading 'put down', is regarded as a loss. A responsive crowd, a warm smile, or a compliment is what we consider a 'win'. So, yes, we do have a win f loss record, which is very important to each one of us. Our 1978 Fall season was a successful and su- per one. lt was full of rallies, clinics, locker rooms, M 8: M's Cplain and peanutll, streamers, pom routines, and an exciting bon fire. Judy Shultz Judy Williams We would like to give a special thanks to our advisor, Mrs. Shirley Brockway, because without her patience and support, our season would not have been as full as it was. Also, a super special thanks to the students of O.S.H.S., who have been supportive and spirited at our games and rallies. This made us, as well as the teams, happy and probably made the difference between victory and defeat. Not as far as the Old Saybrook girls' field hockey team is concerned. Could they match their success of 1977? That would' be a stiff order as the 1977 team had gone undefeated in regular sea- son play, won the small division of the Shoreline Conference and advanced to the semi-finals of the C.I.A.C. tournament. ' Not only did they repeat these feats but added the class S number one ranking. This was the Rams' sixth consecutive year of state tournament play, every year since its inception. Seven seniors formed the nucleus of this formidable squad led by Laura Learned who set a game record of seven goals and scored 63 goals in her four years of play. Denise Sheehan, Laura Learned, Lisa Splain, and Ro Alberine were A1l-Shore- line team members while Lisa and Denise were also honored as members of the first ever all-state team in field hockey. i 92 l SEN 3 u sr N., ,,... 5.
