The National Honor Society was founded on the principle of rewarding those who, during their high school years, besides attaining a high degree of scho- larship, have demonstrated to the fullest the qualities of tine character, leadership, and service. Since February 9, 1951, when Old Saybrook High School first received its charter, the Honor Society has had the privilege of' bestovving on qualified stu- dents an honor which is unexcelled by any other award conferred in high school. In order to be eligible for this award, juniors and Seniors must have attained an average of B or better. The keystone and flaming torch is the official emblem of the Society. The keystone represents the central principles of scholarship, character, leadership, and service upon which the organization is based. The flaming torch symbolizes the light of- truth which recipients strive to uphold as an incentive for others to follow. The solemn dignity of the traditional candlelight service in which members repeat the pledge, and re- ceive their pins, the tokens of their membership, has impressed all with the real significance of the organ- ization. THE HONOR SOCIETY I pledge myself to uphold the high ideals of the National Honor Society, to build a strong Character in myself' and others, to further the advancement of Scholarship, to carry aloft the torch of leadershipg and to serve my school, my community, and my country, in the interest of humanity.
