'ip -,A,,- Av, g Y fin VL li- - - v , Under the direction of Mr. Sherman Krane, the Old Saybrook High School Band had an eventful and successful year. The band members in their snappy red and black uniforms and the maiorettes Helen Gonser, Gerry Dowd, Elaine Benwoy, Bonnie Robinson, Julie Smith, Kay Brink, Mary Jane Griswold, Janice Symington, Kerin Romenici, and Claire Haslach in their stunning white made an impressive appearance . Big events of the year: The Halloween Parade, a benefit performance at the theater for the March of Dimes, Spring Concert, Band Festival, Memorial Day Parade, and finally The Commencement Exercises. -Y? 3 Band members and maiorettes are equally reluctant to see Mr. Krane leave . lI -. .X Wafiona onor ociefy Old Saybrook first became a member of the National Honor Society on February 9, l95I. Ad- mittance to the Society is highly sought after by the students. The symbols of the Honor Society are a Keystone and a Flaming Torch. The keystone re- presents the central principles of scholarship, char- acter, leadership, and service. While the flaming torch symbolizes the light of truth which recipients strive to uphold. In order to be a member of the HonorSociety a student must have a B or better average. In addition oo scholarship he must possess a fine character, ex- hibit qualities of leadership, and be of service to his school and community. If the student possesses these qualities he will be admitted to the Honor Society in the impressive dignity of the candle light ceremony. This year six seniors and five juniors were ad- mitted to the society. Our Principal, William Belanich, administered the pledge, while member- ship pins and cards were presented to each initiate by Superintendent, Joseph Walsh. The main address was given by John Solari, Chairman of the Board of Education. It is a pleasure to have Mr. William Belanich as counselor and Mr. Joseph Walsh as an honorary mem - ber of the Old Saybrook High School Chapter. Appleby, J. Edgecombe, J. Baldoni, B, Hirshfeld, B.
