Trip. , 0 0 Last Fall, when the scraping of bumpers and the grinding of gears were heard. an- other group of students were on their way to become the safe drivers of tomorrow. Each students gets personal instructions from Mr. Pierce, who is the instructor. They learn that there is more to driving than just being able to start, steer, and stop. They are taught all the rules of safety and put what they have learned into use during the afternoons when they go driving. The course is divided into two semesters and about twenty-four pupils are enrolled in the course. It is the objective of each student to receive his license before the end of the school year. Some of the things a driver must remember are: 1. The person behind the wheel is responsible for the actions of the car. 2. A car is a dangerous machine -it should not be used for play. 3. A person never saves time by speeding. 4. The driver should always be courteous towards pedestrians. f The Driveris Training course is doing its share in making todayis student the safe driver of tomorrow. There are fewer accidents involving people who have taken the Driveris Training Course than among those who have not. The Course, therefore, is valuable in our curriculum. CHANIPACNF sc R VIOLFTTF 744124466 This year Old Orchard opened its season against Brunswick The game was played on even terms all the way through but three plays went all the way Having lost the first game, 26-0, Old Orchard did not give up as the next week they paid a visit to over-confident Biddeford. Much to Biddefordis surprise, we tied them 7-7. The fol- lowing week the team went to Kittery to play Traip. It was one of the best games of the season. This game will never be forgotten, as 0.0.B. knocked off Traip, 7-6. The game was played in the pouring rain, as one of the Portland papers said, The game was played at Memorial Lake, rather than Memorial Field. The next game was an easy victory. Old Orchard played host to Wells High. We won 48-7. The next week, 0.0.B. journeyed to St. Louis Field to play St. Francis. It was a nip and tuck game all the way, but faithful 0.0.B. came out on top again by winning 13-0. The last game of the year was with ou.r oldest rival, Kennebunk. It was said that Kenne- bunk was all pepped up for this game and that they were going to beat us. The paper favored 0.0.B. by two touchdowns. The game started on even terms. The first quarter was the toughest as both teams were scoreless. During the second, third and fourth quarters, 0.0.B. really went to town. It was impossible for Kennebunk to stop us. The final score was Old Orchard-55, Kennebunk-7. It was one of the biggest surprises of the year, not only to the people and the team, but also to the head coach, Mr. Loranger, and assistant coach, Mr. McSweeney. This season proved to be a very good one, in fact, the best since 194-9. We had a total of five wins, one tie, and one loss. rv ,. , t ,.,, ,IF4 .7 . V r I 'fi ,fy '? 'guketlall The Seagull,s lassies opened their 1954-55 season under the fine direction of their new coach, Miss Philbrook. Connie Bean and Bea Fournier were elected as co-captains. The Lassies had a successful record in that they won 10 games and lost only 7. The season opened on December 1 with much pep, spirit, and score at the expense of a green Wells team. We won 48-25, then swamped Cathedral 72-41. Kennebunk, York, and Westbrook proved to have too much experience and height for the Seagulls, but all other schools bowed to them. Helen Fournier, freshman forward, was high scorer for the season with 249 points. Varsity members include: Co-Captains, Bea Fournier and C. Bean. D. Farr. P. Gillis. J. Skidds, S. Wood, J. The junior varsity was made up of all senior girls. Both of the teams played three games: Westbrook Junior College, Thornton Academy and Wayne- flete. This yearis varsity cheerleaders are Captain Peggy Gillis, Jackie Timmins, Joan Skidds, Janice Boynton, Pam Morgan, Colleen Wilson, and Selma Wood. These girls, under their able Captain, have led us through a very successful year in football and basketball with their peppy cheers. The faculty had a difficult job this year picking four new cheerleaders to fill the vacancies from last year. After many prac- tices Pam Morgan, Colleen Wilson, Janice Boynton, and Joan Skidds proved to be the best. The girls certainly add enthusiasm and color to all the games. The J.V.,s are Captain Jeanette Cantara, Janet Paradis, Kay Meehan, Joan Timmins and Jackie Petit. The J.V.'s have new cheers that add spirit to the Junior Varsity games and are likely candidates for replacement on next year's varsity squad. A new varsity cheer which has caught on quickly is the Bunny Hop which goes as follows: Co-o Old Orchard Co team Co! On to victory Go-Co-Co. rx al S 1 3 E .s it E eil.:.U.ul. The Gulls continued their unbeaten record until losing to Cape Elizabeth on December 30th with a score of 79-64. They continued on undefeated until they met the Cape and St. Louis. They wound up their regular games in January with a record of eighteen wins and three losses. This year the team had Dick Plante and Don Cummings as forwards, with Arnold Harrison, Bill Champagne, Jim Smith and Tom Tucker alternating. Our centers were Bob Fowler and Arnold Harrisong our guards, Russel Wyman and John Ladakakos, with Bob Rioux, Norman Ouellette, and Bob Wells as substitutes. The boys traveled to Sanford to take part in the York County Tournaments. The Gulls hit a high score of 101 to Berwick Academy,s 36. At a later game, the team won over St. Francis with a score of 66-39. On that evening, our coach, Mr. John McSweeney, received a trophy and small gold basketballs for the boys. This meant that the team would go to the Western NM Tournaments in Lewiston. Their first game was with Paris High. The Paris High boys proved hard to beat, and won with a 62-4-0 score. Another season of which the coaches and team could be proud came to an end.
