ll Hll I and dlfiferent a large number of students flock to the 1n1t1al meetmv True to form more than a dozen puplls came to the first sesslon of the debatmg class All but seven have dropped out one by one smce that tlme However Mr Hamlen who lb rn charge of the class IS not downcast for he reallzes that a few always find out that they are not as mterested m the sub ject ln hand as they orlgmally belleved they were Each year Bates College sponsors a number of lnter scholasnc debates on a questxon whlch IS of natlonal lmpor tance The subject of the questxon 15 declded by the part1c1 pants 1n the debates of the precedmcf year The question selected this year I5 concerned wxth the natlonal cham stores and stated formally lb The cham stores are a menace to the best Interests of the Amerlcan publnc Mr Hamlen sent to Bates for reading matter and m a few days all klnds of blbhographles magazlnes debatmg guldes and digests arrxved In fact there 15 enough materxal ln these papers and booklets recelved to carry a team through any debates and on elther sxde of the subject of cham stores All the maternal IS sent to a hxgh school wxshmg to enter the debatmg league on the recexpt of an admlsslon fee of a few dollars I have found out that the majorlty of the students are taklnff thus subject because of the fine trammg xt gxves 1n speakmg Many of us I fear are sadly ln need of a blt of thls especlal tralnmg Jlldglflg from our actlons when we rxse IH class and try to express ourselves Therefore I advlse every one who can to enter thls class at the start and remam wlth It to the Hnxsh THE HIGHEST HONOR The word honor has an attractlve sound Especlally IS thls true to the boy or glrl of hugh school age They are will 1ng to work hard to show thelr prowess ln basketball baseball or other sports Isnt thls true because they conslder bemg a good athlete IS an honor to themselves and to thelr school?
