I ' 2. 8 THE OCEANIC We have noted with great pleasure that Miss Nellie Guilford of the class of '85 is the First woman in the State of Maine to serve as a member of the Grand jury. We are proud that York county and the town of Old Or- chard have had the privilege of sending the first woman repre sentative and in this case the only woman to a Grand jury but as a school we are especially proud that an alumna of O O H S has received this honor A school is known by its alumni' The alumni of any school have everything to do with shaping the character and standards of that school There is something most encouraging to us as we labori ously pursue our various courses to know that others have studied these same lessons have overcome these obstacles which stand in our pathways Others have succeeded in these things which we attempt We too can succeed' Perhaps we can go even further since we have the advantage of following blazed trails Many wise men not educators only but clergymen poll ticlans and business men are saying that the school system to day is a tragic failure lt is hard to believe so broad a state ment but nevertheless as the old proverb has it There is no smoke without some Fire There is without doubt much to be said on both sides By what standards shall our schools be Judged3 ust what have we a right to expect from our schools3 What shall our boys and girls have learned when the schools send them into the world in their final une3 This last question is well answered in a recent issue of Collier s Magazine There are many more things that a grown boy or girl should know of course but the five which follow are beyond question e s ould mm imstlf hi 1 lllf. ls allng xnm 1 4 isnt He s ould knmx 1 tl xdt an pro 1 1011 th It fits him ind mx to ltttp on lcaimnf, HL shou d mm tht world h ls to lxu. in an t Q p oplv. 1 4 HL should ltnmx hmm to ust him elf and his uollt to gmt fiom t L uolld the things ht most xx xnts illll to in the stunt fm xx lt is t 1 I 1 1 it ls Illusl neu nur 114 1 fuundu on this ltmmlu L nu 1 lm zur tn mn lllllgllljg 1 with ln Illlll 4 unsc fish IX Everyone has a right to these at least without them he is handicapped in the race of life How many get them3 Dad you3 Will your chlldren3 1.
