JEAN PTACEK Math and Algebra With ne Common oal Never before have the people of the world had such a tremendous desire and need for a high degree of education. Older nations are striving to keep their culture moving for- ward while newly formed nations are fighting to reach a level that will afford them the respect they feel they deserve. If the United States is to continue to assume the role of leader- ship in the free world we shall have to continue to improve the quality of our education. It may no longer be sufficient to appeal to the student to learn for personal reasons, for although this is still of import- ance, the very survival of our way of life will depend upon the continued improvement of intellectual level of our people. In the contest for freedom we must be careful that the final score does not read no hits, no runs, one error - that of an inadequately educated people.
