With the realization that one more decade would drop the future of the world into the laps of our generation, students prepared for another op- portunity to increase their span of knowledge. In every field of scholastic effort, Old Mission students have proven themselves unexcelled. We feel this is primarily due to the fine faculty and to the character of the students themselves. We strive to maintain a high degree of integrity and will endeavor to strengthen school spirit and the educational system in order to pattern a bright future. It is impossible to dis- cern day-to-day changes in individual behavior and action. Nevertheless, changes have taken effect and it is only as actions are observed over a period of time are they noticeable. During recent years the speed with which new ideas must be disseminated and assimilated has increased by virtue of many scientific and cultural advances. The junior high school pupil who takes advantage of the day by-day opportunities to understand the nature of change is preparing himself to meet the complex situations he will face in later years. The quality of his preparation will determine, to a large measure, the extent of his success and happiness in future years. DR. HOWARD D. MCEACHEN Superintendent of Schools Administration BOARD OF EDUCATION STANDING: Dr. Howard D. McEachen, Roy E. Welch, Henry M. Turrell. SEATED: Richard V. Garrett, Melvin Flowers, Kenneth P. Rankin. PS. It is with pleasure that I take this opportunity to extend best wishes to my partners in Old Mission Junior High School. We are all members of the same team and we have and will be working with each other for the benefit of you our students, our school, and our community. Our job is to do the best we can each and every day in working to become better American citizens. This job will be accomplished by all of us working as a team. It depends not only upon your work in subject matter areas but your participation in the activities of the school and the the development of attitudes conducive towards good citi- zenship and accepting your share of responsibilities in this the Old Mission Junior High School team. My job is more than just setting up rules and regulations and general administrative duties. It includes helping both students and teachers to get the greatest possible benefit out of our facilities, recognizing that the most important resources are the talents of our faculty and our students. You are wel- come at all times as a partner in planning the activities of our school. Your cooperation in the past has been evident by the high spirit and morale in our school. I solicit your suggestions and your cooperation in the future in order that we may be a proud and successful partnership. WALT WAY DICK TRAST Counselors DR. LLOYD SCHURR Principal A number of things could be said to explain the purposes, aims and activities involved in our guid- ance program. However, the defini- tions most often used are more theo- retical than practical and, therefore, not very useful It is our hope that the guidance offices become known as places where a student can come when he needs a listener to his problems, where he can get help in self-understanding, educational planning, and begin to learn about career opportunities: where parents and teachers are wel- come to use the resources available and to meet in conference for the purpose of gaining better understand- ing in our common aim - that of as- suring the best possible education and opportunities for success of each student P.S Q Q .assess .PQS--fifl 29 'I , L IPX, zzz 'aww-wfgklywv ws- yea.. X. W i L E4 misss Msn-sw Walsh? MRS. JEAN PTACEK Math and Algebra With ne Common oal Never before have the people of the world had such a tremendous desire and need for a high degree of education. Older nations are striving to keep their culture moving for- ward while newly formed nations are fighting to reach a level that will afford them the respect they feel they deserve. If the United States is to continue to assume the role of leader- ship in the free world we shall have to continue to improve the quality of our education. It may no longer be sufficient to appeal to the student to learn for personal reasons, for although this is still of import- ance, the very survival of our way of life will depend upon the continued improvement of intellectual level of our people. In the contest for freedom we must be careful that the final score does not read no hits, no runs, one error - that of an inadequately educated people. To supplement established forms of education and to meet the demands this competitive era, school organi- zations are an integral part of our development. These organizations provide a means of expression, de- velop social abilities, and afford opportunities for practical experience. The major responsibilities are shouldered by the students under the guidance of sponsors. Valuable ex- perience is gained by this participation, experience that will be of paramount importance to our future. 1 Nw. i E l t , , iw N6 ' i Fi- If 'JZ T f' .555-' e .if ft. Under the guiding hands of an excellent staff, in the persons of Miss Mary Hodgsen and Miss Jean Couch, these students work diligently throughout the year attempting to prove, dis- prove, discover, display or conclude. Since then 36 weeks have passed which found the world deep in strug- gle, the nation founding a new frontier and launching a man into space, our state celebrating its centenary, and Old Mission students preparing in the 60's for the demands of the 70's and 8O's. Some advance to Shawnee Mission, all have truly profited by these 4,536,000 valuable seconds which have composed our school year. mmmm mm 451'
