To a tavern to a tavern ln a suburb of Old Lyme Came a miner forty nmer And a donkey Clementine Brown she was and so sure footed Though her age was twenty nine She went faster minus master Pretty donkey Clementine As a donkey perhaps Im not qualified to talk about people but it seems to me that a recent occurrence here is a tale worth telling Let s see I m twenty mne now and the forty nmers were at school here twelve years That makes seventeen years since I was in Old Lyme with the old gang when they grad uated Yep it was lust seventeen years and a day when a strange looking character drew near town with a pick an axe and a thicket of beard He went down the street to the tavern looked up at the sign which read SHADES OF THE FORTY NINERS M Finnigan McCarthy Prop and went in I recognized him as Digger O Dayett the only forty niner who had pursued his search for gold after graduation As soon as he crossed the threshold he saw Bud standing behind the bar wearing a big white apron Bud immediately called his old pal Robert Bugbee to see the lost miner Bob has made his mark in the world as an entomologist He has charge of the bug collection in Wash mgton D C and was in Old Lyme lookmg for an escaped butterfly Kelly was anxious to hear what had happened to the rest of the gang he had parted with back in 1949 I got as close as I could to the window and from a donkeys eye view I ll tell you all I heard about the rest of the forty niners The first name I caught was Joe Bolorquez I remember Kelly said he d planned a future in the Merchant Marine and I gathered he got as far as Hadlyme and is now Captain of the Hadlyme Ferry. Theo Champion is one of his regular customers. She has taken over her father's car and now operates a flourishing taxi business. On Sunday evenings she is a hypnotist at Young People s. The greatest thing she ever did was to hynotize Carl Kotzan for it was the only time in his life that he quietly obeyed anyone. At this time he was going steady with Mary McCulloch but as he insisted on walking barefoot through her intricate coiffure this match was bound to end in despair. Heartbroken Carl left town and became a wrestler. He s now called Careless Carl the Crushing Clutcher. Latest reports indicate that his personal valet is dashing Duane Bugbee who is making quite a tidy sum keeping Carls curls curly. Meanwhile Mary having made a fortune winning the Kentucky Derby on her five- legged pony has now turned to politics. Following the tradi- tion of her grandmother she has organized a third party and plans to nominate Betty Langworthy for the presidency. Her financial backers are Thelma Czikowsky Clara Stanton and Mary Jean Raymond who struck it rich selling refresh- ments tothe toll collectors on the Baldwin Bridge fToll House cookies, naturallyl. Betty isn't the only one who has gone in for politics. When Dewey finally made the presidency in 1964, Howard Plimp- ton became Governor of New York. He, too, many run for president. The feminine vote is a cinch when the women hear his deep voice and see him on television. Kelly asked what had happened to Lillian Manniel I sus pect he s always had a crush on her Bob said that of course she d married Noome but due to the housing shortage they live in the phone booth at James Pharmacy with their four children This arrangement is quite comfortable until cus tomers want to use the phone Recently Lillian went to New York where she ran into an old friend Polly Madison She is now Master of Ceremonies on the women s new quiz show Gravel Gerties Weekend or If the Missuz Dont Go Shoppin Well Go Hungry She also owns a New York night club Her star entertainers are Bets and Babs Mathiason who so a song and dance act and Prilook and Pekkanen a musical depreciation revue with violin and clarinet The only other classmate Polly had seen was Barney Rice Famous for his personality and sparkling wit he was whisked off after graduation to New York where he is now sound effects man on the Lone Ranger' show The Joyces Houlihan and Downing seem to be the only normal ones in the whole class They both married their high school sweethearts and are quite busy raising families and keeping the telephone wires busy Jean Kus Jane Rowland and Barbara McKernan have formed a fashion company U S STYLES FOR US WOMEN They have stiff competition from France where Marcia Frederickson has risen to fame since she married the noted French designer Francois Jardine The motto of the Kus Rowland McKernan outfit is A Miss is as good as a Mlle. Nobody seems to remember what happened to Anita Bugbee. When Jack came back from the Army they were married and when last seen they had started out to tour the country in a wheelbarrow. Norma Into had great aspirations of becoming a concert pianist but she didnt get any closer to the ivories than taking care of elephants at the circus. Marilyn Emerson is one of the more unfortunate members of the class. She became a writer and is being slowly driven mad by her iob: She s in charge of yearbook production at T. O Toole and Sons Publishers' John Selicious was another problem. He worked steadily for four years on his .ecret invention Proiect X. When it was finally completed he was dismayed to find that he had invented a dishpan Nobody has seen him since he headed for the Belgian Congo in a Model T. After Bud and Bob had brought Kelly up to date on his classmates I backed away from the window and decided to take a snooze. The only forty-niner they couldnt locate Bob said was Allene Roche. I happen to know she tried writing for a while, but she faced a future of composing WANTED'S for the Police Gazette so she gave up in despair. Life went from disgusting to nauseating.
