C ass Prophecy It us the year 1954 and pucture yourself un the Post War World Takung off un my Helucopter I hopped down to the largest Trans Atlantuc Aur base near New York Because of dufhcultues un ar rangung my trup I was advused by the stewardess to see the Presudent of the Company Upon beung admutted to a supercolossal offuce I notuced a luttle man swungung un a swuvel chaur He appeared to look luke someone I had known back un hugh school days Suddenly he exclaumed Why hello anet' Who else could ut be but my old fruend Charlue Muller We got to talkung of the where abouts of other classmates He asked me uf I had seen any of them lately I told hum I hadnt H pressed a button and one of the most allurung sophustucated secretarues brusked un I could hard ly realuze ut was Mary Speurs standung besude me My' how New York had changed her Busuness was forgotten for awhule and we dus cussed old tumes As late afternoon approached Charlue unsusted that we all dune at a nute spot known as the Tusdale Rendezvous I was thrulled to death to thunk that I was to patronuze one of New Yorks swanky nught clubs Where had I heard that name before? Oh yes' I remember ut was back un 44 there was a fellow named Tus dale un our class could ut be that he had left the hulls of Hamburg? Upon enterung the Rendezvous we were greeted by Mr Walter Tusdale the host After renewung acquaintances we were ushered to a reserved table where Mr Tusdale assured us we show As we were enjoymg our delughtful ounner the lughts were lowered It was announced that the guest performer of the evenung would be tluat sensatuonal Rumba Queen Senoruta Lacheta Rosuta Nancy Fraser and her dashung dancung partner Senor Amerugo Fernandez Allan Pllmpton Cortez I never would have recognuzed them un theur gay colored South Amerucan dress We summoned our host Mr Tusdale and asked that the entertamers be brought to our table after theur show Talkung to them we commented on theur excellent perform ance They told us they had luved un South Amer uca for the last five years acqurrung the Latun Amer ucan characterustucs It was revealed to us they had been marrued and were now tourung the Unuted States We broke up after thus delughtful evenung spent among my old classmates Whule sleepung peacefully the next mornung I was awakened by the screamung of surens Lookung out the wundow I saw an ambulance and a crowd of people flocked around what remauned of a mar oon plastuc lumousune one of those latest motorung creatuons wuth the all glass tops nothung to ob struct your vuew Poor druver she probably had been out all nute and just now tryung to get back to her Park Avenue Apartment I reached for my glasses to get a good look Someone un a whute uniform was leanung over a small figure now lufted to a stretcher I notuced that the nurse had pretty black curls They seemed famuluar but I could not quute place them After eatung breakfast I proceeded up town Newsboys everywhere were yellung Extra Ex tra read all about ut My curuosuty gettung the best of me I bought a paper Readung the account un the paper I notuced ut was about Vurgunua Leugh a famous actress formerly from Old Lyme De cudung to see uf she was the gurl I knew un our class of 44 I went to see her at the Harkness Meducal Hosputal Upon enterung a room I col luded wuth a nurse that seemed to be almost on the run I looked up and saw those black curls agaun I now realuzed that ut was Mary Appleby e was on her way to see the new patuent that was brought un so I went wuth her Lookung at t us luttle hgure I was much amazed to see that ut was Vurgunua Muller poor kud stull unconscuous Askung Mary about her she told me Vurgunua had been actung for many years She was now playung the leadung part un her husband s latest play A I had to catch the 2 30 plane to New Mexuco I bade farewell to Mary Enterung the plane a pretty stewardess showed me to my chaur Whule makung me comfortable she talked contunuously If I wanted to complaun ut would have been of no use She looked famuluar but I was too occupued to recognuze her As the plane soared toward the heavens I began to suffer a headache As the stewardess offered her assust ance she looked at me strangely as uf she recog nuzed me She asked me uf I had ever luved un Con nectucut and dud I attend the Old Lyme School I told her I had and of course asked her She saud are you kuddun rught away I knew ut could be no other than Barbara Brodeur Duscussung past events and what our classmates were doung Bar bara told me she heard Ruth Maynard was luvung un New Mexuco As I was gomg there I would look her up Landung at Sante Fe Munucupal Aur port I hurruedly made reservatuons at The Brunker Hotel As the hotel was hot and stuffy I decuded to go take a look at thus beautuful landscape No tucung what was once a well kept farm and now seemed shut down I decuded to look around En terung the yard two large growlung black dogs darted around me Afraud to move I just stood and stared In the doorway was a rather pretty woman and behund her stood what must be her husband He seemed much older than she Feelung self conscuous I gazed at the house and saw small heads un most every wundow Goung nearer to the woman I notuced she had bug brown eyes I remem bered back un hugh school a gurl un our class had brown eyes Could thus be Ruth Maynard the gurl I always knew to be so dugnufied9 Funally rec ognuzung me she spoke Several weeks ago l was unfortunate enough to get un the way of a reckless druwer and because of that ended up un the hosputal wuth a broken leg Much to my amazement I heard a famuluar vouce and when I finally opened my eyes I found I had not been dreamung It was a grrm realuty I was un the hosputal and of all people anet Stan hope was my nurse We had a wonderful con versatuon although her work was neglected A uf she ever dud any' She told me that ummeduately after school she had left tl' little hamlet of South Lyme and taken up nursung un the largest cuty she could fund New York She was now luvung wuth her husband a Naval ofhcer un an ultra modern apartment un one of New York s swankuest hotels anet had advanced to head nurse and was en yoyung her work ummensely About thus tume she was called elsewhere leavung me wonderung why she In the freld of sports Old Lyme had rm proved somewhat In football we won the Shore Lme Tournament but m basketball we won only 6 of 21 games The Sophomores con trnbuted joe McKernan Mnke Traskos Lee Halyburton and Benny Andrxcks to the cause Thus the Sophomores had taken their place socxally scholastrcally and athletrcally m the school JUNIOR YEAR Returnmg rn 1942 to take our place as un rors we noted the loss of many of our former students They mcluded Benny Andrlcks Gran McGee Art OConner jenme Scranton and Taffy McCulloch When we flnally settled down for the year we came upon a new face Upon nnvestrgatron rt turned out to be a fugr trve from Kansas Harold Smrth Smxtty was rmmednately taken rn as a member of the gang ard became a very promrnent junior At the start of the year we were greeted by a change ln the faculty and 2idIl'llfllSff2.flXC of frces Our new prmcrpalsupermtendent was Mr Umberger The faculty mcluded Mrss Gravelm Mrss Huntley Miss Kennedy Mlss Kenyon Mr Kotzan Mr Grover and Mr Lelp Wordell were st1ll wrth us from the previous year Mrs Haynes and Mlss Hyland replaced Mr Dane Mrss Kennedy and Mrs Hurlburt the former M1ss Charpentrer who left later IU the year The Jumors that year had the pleasure of Mrss Gravelm as a home room teacher and ad vrsor and Room 29 as a home room The class officers were Presrdent Pat Brown Vrce pres rdent Mary Spears Secretary janet Stanhope and Treasurer Mary Appleby Our Student Councrl representatlves were Charles Muller and Helen Martm The soclal events of the unror Class con srsted of a mmstrel a play and three dances The mmstrel was a great success partnally due to anet Stanhope Helen Martm Lee Haly burton and Mary Spelrs The play Mlss nm my later presented by the Dramatrcs Club was also presented by unzors ln that Helen Martm played the role of herome Later ln the year we had the Chrrstmas and St Patricks Dances both fmancral and socral successes As a clrmax for the year the junior Prom was pre sented It was a great soclal success and wrll long be remembered as the frrst Prom Old Lyme Hlgh School ever had when the class g1v1ng rt dxdnt go ln the hole Athletxcally speakmg the junlors gave flve men to the team They mcluded Lee Haly burton joe McKernan Harold Smxth Walter Tlsdale and Allan Pllmpton Although vue won very few games the boys were rn there fnghtrng all the tlme Scholastrcally and socrally the juniors had taken thenr place rn the school and even now prepared to make therr last stand SENIOR YEAR In September 1943 the lrttle group agaln retraced nts steps back here Absent from our mrdst were joe McKernan Harold Smlth ,Lee Halyburton Faye Houllhan Pat Brown and Everett Bonfoey We also lost Helen Martm one of our most drstrnguxshed class members Helen had graduated the previous year W drd have a new addrtron to the class through Charles Duke who stayed two months As before we had our old home room 29 and our former home room teacher Miss Grav elm Our class Off-ICCIS th1s year were Presrdent Secretary Janet Stanhope Treasurer Mary Ap pleby Our Student Councxl members that year were Walter Tlsdale and Charles Muller The faculty mcluded Miss Gravelm Mrs Smith Mlss Huntley Mrss Prest Miss Pratt Miss Hall Mrs Dunn Mr Grover Mr May and Mr Kotzan The socral events of the year mcluded the Penny Farr the Chrrstmas Dance and the St Patricks Dance All were great fmancral and socral successes In the f1eld of sports the Seniors were repre sented by Walter Trsdale and Allan Plrmpton Thrs was the Hrst year Old Lyme Hlgh ever had a soccer team and although they falled to wm any of the games scheduled the spmt was there These two boys were also outstand mg ln the Helds of basketball and baseball Thus you have the hrstory of the class of 1944 And now as we prepare to pack up our books and pencils to leave we are struck not by a slgh of relref but by a srgh of regret be cause now that rt IS time to leave we have suddenly realrzed that our school days wrll probably be the happrest days of our llves I 1 3 .
