Class Hzslory THRU THESE PORTALS FRESI-IMAN YEAR Early one September mornmg rn 1940 there conyerged on the beautrful edlflce called Old Lyme School a group of yery green but yery determmed youngsters Wandering almlessly around the corridors they soon learned they were to depart to Room 27 rn the newly added wmg In Room 27 they found many old frlends and a number of new ones Seycn of our new students lrke therr ancestors had descended upon us from a reglon farther north called Hamburg Thus group mcluded Ruth Maynard ulrette Crowley Beatrnce W'elch Walter Tls dale Allan Pllmpton Arthur OConner and Fred Czrkowsky Durmg the course of the year we also added Carmen Lopez Gran McGee and Blll Brown After a strenuous breaklng rn week for both the faculty and the students they fmally settled down to elect therr class offrcers They mcluded Presldent Helen Martm V1cePres1 dent Orrin Champlain Secretary Barbara Bro That year the students of Old Lyme High had the pleasure of recenmg mstructron from a most mterestmg faculty mcludmg Mrs Dem mg Mlss Walsh Miss Whlttler Miss Mrnard Miss Stokes Mr Hyelm Mr Dane and Mr ulnlan and Mr Thorp our new prrnclpal superlntendent Our home room teacher and advisor that year was Mr Dme Soclally speaking the Freshmen that year had many dances the St Patrlck s dance stand mg out as most promment When the Drama tics Club presented ane Eyre three of our most drstxngulshed Freshmen appeared rn the cast namely Vlrglnla Muller Helen Martm and Mary Spenrs In the field of sports we were represented by Mlke Traskos Kcn Lougee erry Rlce oe Mclxernan Art O Conner and Lee Halyburtou The football team won two of four games but the basketball team weakened by the loss of Kwasnxewskl and Kung won only one of thlr teen games The baseball team dld a llttle bet ter though and won four of twelve games It was thxs year that a new system of clubs was established that met durmg extra curricular perrods They were the Student Councrl Pho tography Radno Home Fconomncs Lettermans Glee Drlyers and Dramatlcs Clubs Our Stud ent Councll members that year were Orrm Champlaln and Helen Martm Thrs new sys tem proy ed both mterestlng and lnstructrve to all the students All rn all thc Ireshmen contrlbuted much to thc school and enjoyed many of its benefits SOPHOMORE YEAR In September 1941 a yery greatly decreased number of Sophomores doggedly retraced thenr foot steps back to school Absent from the class were Barbara Atwood Blll Brown Orrm Cham plarn Iared Czrkowsky Lee Griswold ulxette Crowley Beatrlce Welch and Carmen Lopez Later rn the year due to thelr lust for adven ture and patr10t1c splrxt to defend thelr country we lost fue of our most well known boys to the armed forces They were Mike Traskos Bob Spelrs lmmy Bean erry Rxce and Ken Lougee Thrs year we had the pleasure of haung Mxss Kutz as our home room teacher and ad yrsor Our home room was 26 The class offx cers that year mcluded President Mike Tras kos Vlce president Bob Sperrs Secretary Bar bara Brodeur and Treasurer Ey erett Bonfoey The faculty that year retalned only Mlss Walsh and Mr Dane but were supplemented by Miss Kutz Miss Charpentrer M155 Symonds Mlss Handy Mr Hayes Mr Wordell and Mr Cole 'Ihe latter was succeeded by Mr Scott and later by Mr Kryger Our Student Councll members were Charles Muller and Helen Martm The socral event sponsored by the Sopho more s mcluded the Inltlatron Wrnter XX'onder land and St Patrick dance and the Whats lt Hop All were fmanclal and soclal successes When the Glee Club presented The Sunbonnet Glrl an operetta by johnson A Morgan Helen Martm a well known Sophomore appeared ln the tntle role supported by a cast practically composed of Sophomores I V . In the freld of sports Old Lyme had rm proved somewhat In football we won the Shore Lme Tournament but m basketball we won only 6 of 21 games The Sophomores con trnbuted joe McKernan Mnke Traskos Lee Halyburton and Benny Andrxcks to the cause Thus the Sophomores had taken their place socxally scholastrcally and athletrcally m the school JUNIOR YEAR Returnmg rn 1942 to take our place as un rors we noted the loss of many of our former students They mcluded Benny Andrlcks Gran McGee Art OConner jenme Scranton and Taffy McCulloch When we flnally settled down for the year we came upon a new face Upon nnvestrgatron rt turned out to be a fugr trve from Kansas Harold Smrth Smxtty was rmmednately taken rn as a member of the gang ard became a very promrnent junior At the start of the year we were greeted by a change ln the faculty and 2idIl'llfllSff2.flXC of frces Our new prmcrpalsupermtendent was Mr Umberger The faculty mcluded Mrss Gravelm Mrss Huntley Miss Kennedy Mlss Kenyon Mr Kotzan Mr Grover and Mr Lelp Wordell were st1ll wrth us from the previous year Mrs Haynes and Mlss Hyland replaced Mr Dane Mrss Kennedy and Mrs Hurlburt the former M1ss Charpentrer who left later IU the year The Jumors that year had the pleasure of Mrss Gravelm as a home room teacher and ad vrsor and Room 29 as a home room The class officers were Presrdent Pat Brown Vrce pres rdent Mary Spears Secretary janet Stanhope and Treasurer Mary Appleby Our Student Councrl representatlves were Charles Muller and Helen Martm The soclal events of the unror Class con srsted of a mmstrel a play and three dances The mmstrel was a great success partnally due to anet Stanhope Helen Martm Lee Haly burton and Mary Spelrs The play Mlss nm my later presented by the Dramatrcs Club was also presented by unzors ln that Helen Martm played the role of herome Later ln the year we had the Chrrstmas and St Patricks Dances both fmancral and socral successes As a clrmax for the year the junior Prom was pre sented It was a great soclal success and wrll long be remembered as the frrst Prom Old Lyme Hlgh School ever had when the class g1v1ng rt dxdnt go ln the hole Athletxcally speakmg the junlors gave flve men to the team They mcluded Lee Haly burton joe McKernan Harold Smxth Walter Tlsdale and Allan Pllmpton Although vue won very few games the boys were rn there fnghtrng all the tlme Scholastrcally and socrally the juniors had taken thenr place rn the school and even now prepared to make therr last stand SENIOR YEAR In September 1943 the lrttle group agaln retraced nts steps back here Absent from our mrdst were joe McKernan Harold Smlth ,Lee Halyburton Faye Houllhan Pat Brown and Everett Bonfoey We also lost Helen Martm one of our most drstrnguxshed class members Helen had graduated the previous year W drd have a new addrtron to the class through Charles Duke who stayed two months As before we had our old home room 29 and our former home room teacher Miss Grav elm Our class Off-ICCIS th1s year were Presrdent Secretary Janet Stanhope Treasurer Mary Ap pleby Our Student Councxl members that year were Walter Tlsdale and Charles Muller The faculty mcluded Miss Gravelm Mrs Smith Mlss Huntley Mrss Prest Miss Pratt Miss Hall Mrs Dunn Mr Grover Mr May and Mr Kotzan The socral events of the year mcluded the Penny Farr the Chrrstmas Dance and the St Patricks Dance All were great fmancral and socral successes In the f1eld of sports the Seniors were repre sented by Walter Trsdale and Allan Plrmpton Thrs was the Hrst year Old Lyme Hlgh ever had a soccer team and although they falled to wm any of the games scheduled the spmt was there These two boys were also outstand mg ln the Helds of basketball and baseball Thus you have the hrstory of the class of 1944 And now as we prepare to pack up our books and pencils to leave we are struck not by a slgh of relref but by a srgh of regret be cause now that rt IS time to leave we have suddenly realrzed that our school days wrll probably be the happrest days of our llves I 1 3 .
