RETROSPECTUM A Brzef Hzstory of the Class of 1942 On the mornxng of September 6 1958 a group of determlned youngsters self propelled or trans ported by motor vehncles converged upon the beautiful ednflce known as Old Lyme School They passed through the stately portals and tramped doggedly down the halls to thenr respectlve home rooms All of the groups mlngled freely wxth each other renewmg old acqualntances and form mg new ones The Freshman Class that ns the Class of -12 grnmly entered xts homeroom shrewdly surveyed the surroundmgs studned their home room teacher and advxser Mlss Whnttner and de hantly seated themselves Truly they were a group of fresh men and gurls ln the fullest sense of the word destined to be long remembered ln the an nals of Old Lyme High School The tragic New England hurrxcane occurred durmg the first part of the school year Although xt created havoc nn other branches of lnfe II only gave the students a vacatnon of two days After a strenuous week of breakmg ln the fac ulty the Freshmen took t1me out to elect therr class officers They mcluded Robert Kennedy pres1 dent Fred Scranton vice presndent Cecnly Cham plam secretary and Theron Hoxsne treasurer That year the Freshmen had the pleasure of re cenvmg mstructnon from a versanle and mterest mg faculty It mcluded Mxss Ashley Mlss Roy and Mr Hall Admnmstratlve dutxes were shared by Mr Moulton and Mr Hall Early rn 1939 the first lournalnstnc attempt of the hlgh school made tts appearance It was called the Old Lyme Hlgh Llghts Although lt was publxshed only twlce and had more lnabxlmes than the New Haven Ranlroad lt was the founda tion for blgger and better thnngs to come The efforts of the Freshmen partlcularly Barbara Mon roe were mstrumental ln the success of the paper In the sprmg of 1959 preparatxons were begun for a full four year hngh school by the addltlon of a new wmg to the orngmal bunldmg at a cost of nearly S90 000 The mterest of the people of Old Lyme tn the proper educatlon of thetr off sprmg IS clearly shown by their actxons m the past seven years xn regard to the creatnon mam tenance and preservatxon of an educatxonal mstx tutlon of hugh standmg Socxally speaking the Freshmen held thelr ovsn by bemg responsxble for one thnrd of the affanrs held The Hallowe en Party proved a success so cially but the receipts were neglngnble When the Dramatic Club presented Tom Sawyer nn the sprmg of 1939 George Knng a well known Freshman appeared nn the tltle role supported by a cast partially composed of Freshmen In the sports field Old Lyme had a good year Snx man football was introduced The powerful basketball team of whxch B111 Bugbee was a member won 9 of 14 games The baseball team won 6 of 15 games All m all durmg thexr flrst year m hugh school the Class of 42 contrxbuted much to the school and nts reputatton and enjoyed many of nts benefits and advantages In September 1959 the lnttle group returned to Old Lyme Hlgh as Sophomores Absent from the class were Nancy Woodbrxdge Lucius Blglow Theron I-Ioxsxe Fred Scranton and Howard Dan :els However these losses were supplanted by the appearance of a rustic group of Yankees from a reglon between Old Lyme and Hadlyme known as Hamburg The group mcluded Helen Bull Rlchard Lee Francis Rand and Wxlllam Bates Mr Rand however departed before school closed m une Durmg the first part of the year the Sopho mores w1th Mass Walsh as advnser were forced to maxntam thenr homeroom upon the stage as the new wing was not yet ht for human habltatxon However the dawn of a new year found the class comfortably situated nn Room 26 wxth thenr new homeroom teacher Mr Hjelm That year the faculty was supplemented and replaced by new teachers Mass Walsh Mnss Mm ard and Mr Hjelm Mxss Dworskx substituted durmg the recuperatlon of Mlss Mmard who had sustained a very bad accxdent The class olhcers elected that year were Robert Kennedy president Sam Green secretary and George Kmg treasurer The socnal events sponsored by the Sophomores mcluded xnmatxon ceremomes for the Freshmen and a card party Both were socxal and financial successes Basketball was the only game nn whxch Old Lyme gamed any measure of success The team won 12 of 18 games and came m second m the Shore Lme Tourney The hard clean playxng of such Sophomores as Bugbee Spelrs and Kxng proved to be a defimte asset to the team The Sophomores showed thenr fellow students and the faculty that m all three llnes of endeavor soclal scholastic and sports their abnlltxes were at least equal to those of any other class D a 9 . 7 9 ' I , ' ' 9 9 , . . . , . . . , . , , - ' 7 1 7 7 ! 9 , . 9 9 ' ' ' , 9 - 1 , . 3 9 , . . . .
