Dedicotion The Class of 1942 takes extreme pleasure in dedicating this yearbook, the first ever published by the students of Old Lyme High School, to Miss Mary Yvalsh, who gave so much of her valuable time to act as adviser. Her untiring efforts are greatly appreciated, and are, to a great extent, responsible for the success of this publication. fi MARY E. WALSH JOHN H. THORP Appreciation We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Thorp, whose liberal attitude and splendid cooperation dur- ing the past two years have served as an inspiration to us all. lve fervently hope we have lived up to his expectations in this review. The Student Council The Student Council was organized by Mr. Thorp in 1940 with the purpose of gaining a closer relationship between the student body and the faculty. Under the guidance of the Coun- cil's adviser, Mr. john Dane, a constitution was formulated and ratihed, outlining its functions. The chief accomplishments of the Student Council to date have been to preside over various assemblies, to regulate dates for social functions, to issue charters to new clubs. and to bring to the Coun- cil's attention ideas and motions set before them by fellow students. The Lyme Lzght The Lyme Ligbtf which has been in circulation since Octo- ZX, ber, 1941, is the first newspaper Old Lyme High School has ever produced. It is not only edited by the students, but also published on a rotary duplicating machine. Several experiments were made with the production of the paper, starting with a magazine every six weeks, until the present method of weekly publication was reached. Miss Mary Walsh has been the sole adviser of The Lyme Ligbtf' and has carried staff members through in many a crisis in which the immediate production of the paper seemed almost impossible. Senior Play Cost Jean DeWolf, Vernon Wood, Thomas Bonetti, Miss The Arrival of Kitt The annual senior play was presented in the school auditorium February 27. Miss Isabel Handy, who coached the play, deserves much credit for the success of the production. The play centered around Tommy Bonetti, who did a superb job in his dual role of a young athlete and the actress, Kitty. Sam, a negro porter, was portrayed by jim Noyes, who with his lanky body and drawling speeches, brought out more humor than was in the script. Although illness caused Walt Mazer to miss several rehearsals, he came through splendidly, acting the part of a pompous bachelor. Chick W'ood again showed his ability by playing Ting, a go-getting bellboy. By virtue of his portrayal of a social parasite, athlete john Speirs can now add dramatics to his list of achieve- ments. Genevieve Firgeleski enacted the part of a prim French maid, and everything went smoothly until Judy, Mr. Thorp's dog, started going in the wrong direction. Aunt jane, an antiquated old maid of fifty, was played by jean DeW'olf, in high-laced boots. Barbara Monroe's amusing characterization of Kitty furnished much laughter and excitement, and jane, a sweet young thing, was capably depicted by Eleanor Maynard. DRAMA T I CS CL UB FIRST ROW: H. Unde- feated victors in the Shoreline Conference, the team dis- played such determination and a will to win as has not been seen in many a day. The game which was most outstanding was the second encounter with Clinton, in which in order to reap the fruits of victory, it was neces- sary for the Blue and Gray to score three touchdowns in the last five minutes of play a feat which we consider record approaching Ml FOOTBALL if FIRST ROW Vernon Wood Douglas Bramble Joseph McKernan Randolph Brown Jack Barley Thomas Bonefh Mr Leo Hayes coach SECOND ROW Jack Speurs Michael Traskos George Kung Robert McLean Leon Machmk Norman Emerson FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Home O Lyme O Ly me O Lyme O Lyme Caplan john Speirs George King Michael Traskos jack Bailey Opponent Clinton Madison Clinton Madison it 'A' ld 18 ' ' 6 ld f 24 ' ' 12 ld 24 ' ' 12 ld 30 ' ' 12 'Ir 'A' The success of the 1941-42 basketball team cannot be measured on paper, for though the boys lost their share of games, they rarely walked off the court at the final whistle without having given a creditable performance. They have competed in both basketball and soft ball with no little success in each. The bulk of activity, however, has been confined to competitions within the school. Play days-sports programs including girls from sev- eral schools on a non-competitive basis-have been en- joyed in past years. Old Lyme played hostess to seven other schools in 1940, at Rocky Neck. These days were particularly planned to increase friendly relations between schools. FIRST ROW: B. Monroe, N. Zimmerman, D. Kotzan, E. Griffith, S. Larson, J. DeWoIf, N. Fraser, R. Dean, C. McKernan.
