MA UDE CLOUTIER WE NEVER KNOW HOW HIGH We never know how high we are Till we are called to rise; And then, if we are true to plan, Our statures touch the skies. The heroism we recite Would be a daily thing, Did not ourselves the cubits warp For fear to be a king. Emily Dickison Of Oi l.-MllD IT4TM To Mrs. Maude Cloutier, a teacher and friend we will always remember, we, the Senior Class of 1976, dedicate this yearbook. This dedication is but a small repayment for the time, patience, and knowledge which she gave to us. We thank her for her thoroughness, her willingness to improve us, and for the love and guidance which she so unselfishly gave. Mrs. Cloutier helped to shape and influence many of the graduates of Old Fort, and we, the Seniors, feel very proud to be included in their number. We will always carry with us the fond memories of her class, and moreover the fond memories of a truly wonderful person. 7 ANNUAL STAFF SEATED - Gene Haugh, Chris Whitman, Pam Niday. From the air, stewardess Diane Barger points out the Scenic Sandusky National Park, and the famous Old Fort State University, a huge educa¬ tional complex and institution of higher learning. After landing at Scherger International A irport, owned by mil¬ lionaire recluse Larry Scherger, we visit the airport bar, and find interpreter Nancy Casse man helping bartender Butch DeMonte understand a foreign customer. We also find the owner of the Roach Brewery, Terry Cleveland and his head taste-tester, Mary Ann Burks, sampling the products of some of their competition. Mary Ann assures us that Roach beer is made only with the sparkling water of the Sandusky River. A t the airport currency exchange counter Linda Oakleaf exchanges our U. S. money for Old Fort chips, and urges us to visit the Sue Cantu Art Museum which is at the airport. The Museum is not hard to find for Sue ' s advertising head, Kathy Barth, has done a tremendous job of marking the way. After viewing many of Sue ' s masterpieces, we take a taxi-van, driven by Pat Smith, to Old Fort State Univer¬ sity, designed by the leading architect of our time, John Cook. Secretary Gina Fry graciously offers to be our guide and shows us several of the important parts of the school. We first visit the athletic complex and find head basket¬ ball coach, Pat Swickard, teaching the cheerleaders a new cheer. Track coach Gary Powers is instructing his run¬ ner in how to run a two minute mile, and we see baseball coach Tom Burks filming an Aqua-Velva commercial. From the athletic complex we go to the pre-nursery school educational department, headed by Rise Wise. Pam Niday is the head infant guidance counselor, using information from computer designer Jim Perry’s latest model to plan advanced college curriculum for the children. From the nursery school, Gina guides us to the school of agriculture, where Dean John Bender demonstrates to us how he is able to recycle waste oil into a new protein substitute which is being served in schools across the coun¬ try. We then proceed to the school of music, under the direction of world-renowned pianist Vivica Cleveland. After listening to her latest sonata, we depart from the school and head towards the Ralston-Purina plant, owned by Jeff Miller. Jeffs secretary, Karen Oakleaf, recently voted bookkeeper of the year, introduces us to the head of the Purina Farms, agriculturalist Roger Lange. As we are about to embark on our tour, we find our unirail tour bus will not move, so chief mechanic Gary Kerlin is summoned, and we are soon on our way. Purina veterinarian Scott Rosenberger shows us his latest development — a fourteen legged turkey. Scott is sure this will be a big seller at Thanksgiving. Hitting the road once again, we quickly arrive at the Ellis Mall, named for the famous defense lawyer Don Ellis, who generously donated the 1000 acres for this shopping paradise. The first store we stop at is the world- famous boutique “ Om-lars, owned by Cheryl Omlor, the international trend setter in the fashion world. Pat Terry, in charge of Cheryl ' s marketing, invites us to stay and watch a fashion show of Cheryl ' s latest creations. Knowing that Cover Girl model Teresa Kirby will be in the show, we cannot refuse, and thoroughly enjoy ourselves as fashion editor Chris Whitman describes each of Cheryl ' s creations. 132 From the world of fashion we move to Jim Smith ' s Auto and Body Shop. We wateh as Jim ' s head mechanic, Larry Weiker, installs a Weiker converter in a car. The Weiker converter, recently patented by Larry, causes gasoline to ferment, and has been in great demand. Moving out into the mall we encounter another store to our right. The Haugh and Gibson Health Supplies Cor¬ poration, owned and operated by Edna Gibson and Gene Haugh. With their combined efforts they have invented such modern health conveniences as nuclear powered dentures and atomic tooth paste. Leaving the store we hear the squealing of tires and the howl of a siren and an ambulance rushes by, piloted by ex-race car driver Dan Snay. He reaches the Emergency Medical Services Building just as his engine blows up. We wateh as rescue nurse, Nancy Eschennbrenner, pulls radical dietician Marilyn Beier from the ambulance and drags her into the Medical Services Building. Admitting nurse Pam Borough deduces that Marilyn has once again swallowed one of her experimental food pills, and should be better quickly. Teaching nurse Betty Cunningham explains to her students that Marilyn ' s pill is designed to do away with cafeteria cooking but hasn ' t quite been perfected. In the crowd at the hospital we spot Dan Hiestand, head obituary writer for the Old Fort Blab Newspaper. We follow him to the Blab Building where we meet Blab editor Karen Gillmor. Karen ' s secretary, the talented typist, Martha Beeler, shows us around. First we watc h as the director of the Blab’s circulation department, Diane Funston, instructs delivery boys in how to throw papers properly. We then see international columnist, Aurora Ortiz, working on her latest gossip and advice column. The lights go out, but to rescue charges Willis Smith, e ectrician-in-charge, and the lights are soon functioning again. We leave the mall at last, and head for our next to the last stop, the Fort Seneca Athletic and All Around Have a Good Time Stadium, owned by David Hade. Diane Rau, president of the International Softball League, intro¬ duces us to her new star, Joe Ortiz. Regretfully we are running out of time, so we are unable to watch this superstar in action. Arriving back at the airport, we go to the ticket office where Sheri Shireman cheerfully sells us some first class tickets. Security guard Brenda Joseph asks us to walk through her metal and alcohol detector, and then confis¬ cates all the Roach beer which people are attempting to smuggle out. Boarding the plane, we find that interna¬ tional smuggler Tina Brutcher has managed to slip by Brenda ' s watchful gaze, and so the party begins as we fly off into the sunset. Compliments of OLD FORT MUSIC BOOSTERS 82 THE HISTORY OF OLD FORT SCHOOL FROM PA ST TO FUTURE Until 1885 the children of the Old Fort vicinity received their education at the Foxtown School which was located on the Watson farm where Depinets once lived. On the Fourth of July of that year it was burned down, the fire a result of fire-works. A temporary building was erected in 1886 where Mrs. Emma Nease ' s home once stood. At this time, Charles Flumerfelt, a representative to the state legislature was able to have legislation passed to enlarge the territory to sixteen square miles. The new school built at the north end of town became known as the Old Fort Special School. School was carried on here until 1917. In 1915 the County Board of Education enlarged the school district, adding territory from Pleasant, Liberty, and Ballville Townships. The same year an election was held voting a bond for the erection of a new school building. This was enjoined three times and actual construction was held up for eighteen months. The construction of the new building began in 1916 under the management of the Zemke Brothers Com¬ pany, Sandusky, Ohio. The rural schools in this district were maintained for two years, and were central¬ ized in 1920. After centralization the new school became a first grade high school in place of the former second grade high school. The last principal in the old building was J. H. Nunamaker. The first principal in the new building was Miss Carol McCaulay. The instructors in the new building were high school, Miss Carol McCaulay; sev¬ enth and eighth grades, Mrs. Helen Flumerfelt; fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, Miss Grace Craig; and first, second, and third grades, Miss Anna Miller. The following year the staff was composed of Harrison Zellner, Misses Hazel Stine, Luella Hoke, Esther Heilman, Grace Craig, and Anna Miller. The first agriculture instructor was Jay Whitney and the first home economics instr uctor was Miss Elsie Steward. At this time the student body consisted of 140 boys and girls. Since that time the school has grown until at present there are approximately 566 students and 35 teach¬ ers. In the summer of 1976 the construction of a new high school building will begin. The construction will take place in three phases. Phase I will consist of the building of the following: cafeteria-commons area, music room, vocational agricultural department, industrial arts department, gymna¬ sium containing a ninety-four foot basketball court, locker rooms, training rooms, and offices for all departments. At this time a new sewage system will also be installed. The completion date for Phase I is set for September 1, 1977. Phase II will begin sometime in the not so distant future. This Phase involves raz¬ ing all of the 1913 addition and possibly the 1938 addition. However, the auditorium (built in 1938) may remain and could be totally remodeled. No dates have been set for this Phase. Farther into the future Phase III has been proposed. It consists of constructing a swimming pool. At no time during the building Phases will the operation of school be hampered. The construction of a new high school building has been carefully planned and has already involved a lot of hard work. 184
