Graduation 1971--a day of laughter and tears. This year the bacca¬ laureate and commencement were combined into one ceremony which was an aid to family and friends who travel here for the great event. Rev. Hugh Bowland, who had the Seniors in class at one time, was the baccalaureate speaker and the Hon. Charles Kurfess, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, was the commencement speaker. As the diplomas were being awarded by C. Alton Zimmer¬ man, President of the Old Fort Board of Education, James Rosen- dahl, class advisor, handed a long stem yellow rose to each of the graduates. After a recessional, the Seniors received friends and family on the front lawn of the school. 46 Hon. SPORTS Stockaders Capture Coach Brings Team Together Larry Willis Senior Doug Terry Senior Kent Whitman Senior Mark Murray Senior Steve Berlekamp Junior Old Fort ' s basketball team had their finest season in almost a decade. The team was well balanced everywhere and with three starting Seniors, it had plenty of experience. Tournament time was one of hope for Old Fort to go all the way in 1971. Though detoured by Vanlue in the regionals at Bowling Green, the Stockader ' s fine accomplishments in the tournament will be remembered for years to come. Lakeside was our first opponent, playing at Norwalk Junior High School, the game was never close. Led by Steve Berlekamp and Jo Terry, the Stockaders jumped to a 19 point half-time lead and coasted to a 70-61 rout. St. Mary ' s came next in a game in which Coach Bise especially wanted to win. The Stockaders ran to a 72-65 win and much celebration. Mark Murray had 26 points and Old Fort had the sectional trophy. 1971SCL Championship Managers Dan Perez, Bill Ellis, Bob Hoffman. Statisticians David Strang, Jane Huffman, Emily Fry. Jeff Fry John Burks Junior Junior Dave Burks Junior Rob Burkart Junior Don DeMoss Junior The District was next and so was Colonel Crawford. Playing before a sell-out crowd of more than 2,000 at Norwalk, the Stockaders got by the Eagles 66-62 in a nip and tuck battle. But all these games only led to one thing, a chance to go to the big-time. Bowling Green State University and the regionals. Only one more opponent and that was our old rival from Attica, Seneca East. Seneca County showed its power with its one and two teams fighting for the district title. Old Fort came out like a buzzsaw, shutting off Rick Smith inside, and running and gunning the fast break all night long. We blew them off the court 82 to 68, playing our finest game of the season. Larry Willis and Doug Terry both had 23 points and the shouting and joy followed us all the way home. 89 Sectional And District Nets, Mean On To Regionals Varsity Cheerleaders Freshman Cheerleaders Sue Cunningham, Holly Sheidler, Melanie Burks, Debbie Barto, Cheri Weiker. There are many words we could use to sum up the accomplishments of our baseball team, but only one we are really sold on--fabulous. In the past five years under the leadership of Coach Rosendahl, the Stockaders have compiled an overall record of 99 wins and 35 losses. Need we say more? This record includes 5 straight district championships leading onto the regionals. In these 5 appearances, the Stockaders have managed to gain 2 state berths--winning the Class A Championship in 1968 and be¬ coming runner-up in 1971. The season started off slow this year, but the boys were able to hang in there and get down to some serious ball playing. The schedule was one of the toughest in years, confronting many double and triple A schools. Yet the boys managed to keep their cool and come out on top. It all started out when we defeated Seneca East for the Sectional Title. The score was 4 to 2 with Larry Willis going the distance for the Stock¬ aders. Now we were on our way to a chance to make it five in a row-five District Championships, that is. Larry again went all the way, defeating Plymouth 7 to 0 in the opener and Lucas, 7 to 0 in the finals. Again we found ourselves traveling to Deshler once more to appear in the re¬ gionals. Our first encounter was with Columbus Grove. We soundly de¬ feated them 4 to 2. Now our hopes were high. Would we win tomorrow and find ourselves on the way to Columbus to compete in the State? It looked that way when the Stockaders walked off the field with a victory over Arlington. The score was 7 to 2. The first game of the state saw Larry on the mound again facing Northwestern. The score was tied 5 all in the top of the 9th. We managed to get a couple boys on when Keith Whitman came up with a satisfying double, driving in two runs. We came out on top, winning with a score of 7 to 5. The State Finals. How would we fare? Not like we had hoped. The boys just couldn ' t seem to get it all together. Russia defeated us by a score of 13 to 5. But, we couldn ' t have been more proud of our Coach and Ball Players. The only thing left to say is thank you and to let them know that they did their best.
