GC 977.101 SE50F, 1970 3 1833 07225 2130 THE TRAIL 1970 Old Fort School Old Fort, Ohio l r D I Foreu ord As editor, there are many things that I would like to say about the 1970 Trail. I feel that all the work that was put into it was well worth it. It will be a lasting and tangible memory, not only for the Class of 1970, but also for anyone who, in some way, had a part in the activities in this book. There are many people who helped to make this yearbook possible. All of these people have come to mean something special to us, the people with whom they were so patient. Therefore we would like to thank everyone who helped us, especially Mr. Frederick Good, our advisor, who worked with endless enthusiasm. Now, as you turn the pages of this book, we hope many fond memories will be brought to mind, memories that will remind you of the work, the success, the failures and the hopes and dreams that could only have come from knowing and working with people like the teachers, advisors, and students of Old Fort High School, 1969-1970. Editor 2 Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1970, would like to dedicate the 1970 edition of “The Trail” to Mr. Frederick Richard Good. Mr. Good’s two years of teaching, since graduation from college, have been at Old Fort. Mr. Good graduated from Fostoria High School and from Ohio State University in 1967. He majored in Micro-biology and received his B.A. in Biological Science. He also received his M.S. in Food Science from Ohio State. During the past two years, Mr. Good has taught General Math, Algebra I, Geometry, and English 9,10. The class is dedicating this yearbook to Mr. Good as a very small token of our gratitude for the many times he has helped us when others had given up. He directed both our class plays, served as advisor for our yearbook and has been our unofficial class advisor. We sincerely hope that this dedication can in some small way repay him for all his hard work and energy. Therefore, Mr. Good, the Class ol 1970 wishes to say thank you tor being “our kind of person”. While the War of 1812 was raging upon all sides, messages of hope, despair, encouragement, and feverish excitement passed over the Old Trail. From this small, war-like beginning evolved the peaceful little village of Old Fort. Hardy pioneers settled about the rich river land, and the Old Trail now served in peace, even as it had in war. As the community grew, need of adequate education grew, and so it was that Old Fort school had its beginning. Down through the years the Old Trail, though it has undergone the changes of civilization, has supported its burden of human travel. Generations have come and gone, yet it has withstood it all. From the standpoint of the seniors leaving the school portals, that Trail is symbolic of Life’s Road. With slightly faltering footsteps, we place our feet upon its vast expanse. No matter how intensely we look, we cannot see into the foggy future, but we do have a very comforting thought. Our beginnings are founded true, with good, deep roots. The future now looks a bit brighter. We step upon the Trail with a lift of the shoulders and place our feet with the confidence of Youth who have a Heritage. Each and every one has gone out to search for a new and different kind of life. Have they achieved the goals that at one time were so important? Have their lives been successful? Let’s look iu on a special report from the Huntley and Brinkley News Hour. This is the Seven O’Clock News with MIKE ONEY filling for David Brinkley. We are now outside the new NASA Control Center located in the heart of the city of Old Fort, a town which has grown to the size of a metropolis. We have with us Senator DENNIS STACY, who will be our host during the tour through NASA. It o o seems as if the growth of Old Fort has had its greatest effect in the school. This has caused many problems tor VICKIE GRAHAM, the elementary principal. She has been forced to add many new faculty members to her staff. One of them is a new school nurse, PAM BROWN. She has her hands full with casualties from MARGARET GONZALEZ’S physical education classes. Another addition is SUE LUTZ, an assistant to the school secretary, JUDY OAKLEAF. Senator Stacy has informed me that NASA Control Head, ex-marine DOUGLAS CLEVELAND, is ready for the tour. Upon walking through the door, we see JOANNA FOREMAN and CATHY FOREMAN working on some financial reports. ALICE ULMER is also busy taking dictation from MIKE MURRAY. Down the hall we see KATE STIGER examining the Astronauts’ teeth, while Doctor JOHN SWOPE gives physicals in the next room. 1 urning to the left, we come into the room where the space capsules are being built. The mechanics, FRED WILBERT and BILL BINKLEY, are now working with the head carpenter, GORDON TERRY, and (light plan executive, RON RYMAN. The next stop is the cafeteria where CAROL MYERS, KAREN GABEL, and OPAL TERRY serve us lunch. In the cafeteria we meet BRAD FRY, RICK MYERS, and ROBIN BYRNE with their high school vocational classes. They invite us to visit the high school which has just recently been built by “RICK SANFORD and Sons Construction Firm”. Superintendent BILL MURRAY welcomes us as we walk into the expansive new high school building. DEE ANN DRUCKENMILLER is seen drilling her girls’ basketball team. She has coached four slate championship games. KATHY SMITH, the English teacher, is grading compositions across the hall. As we go to the business department we find MARCIA BINKLEY explaining the use of some new data processing equipment. Time is getting short so we must leave the city of Old Fort. Coming to the edge of town, we see one of the greatest Airline Training Schools in the country. ROBERTA BETHEL, one of the School’s head teachers, and secretary DEBBIE SHELLHAMMER are busy working. Down the street we see the First Lady’s Palace, a beauty salon known across the nation for its beautiful creations. WINIFRED COLGATE is the owner. Many important people have grown up here. ROBERTA DeMONTE has become the director of the National Council of Adoption. MARTHA ZYSKI, also a former resident of Old Fort, has been working as head administrator for the Peace Corps. Many others have gone on to be scientists, doctors, and lawyers, like the famous criminal lawyer, ZILPA GARZA. Our time is up however, and we must be getting back to New York. It has been great visiting the city of Old Fort, and thank you Senator Stacy for being a wonderful host. We can now see that goals can be achieved. Time, energy, and hope can make dreams become reality, and life.a success. Now back to Chet. 32 33 Senior Wills I, BOBBIE BETHEL, will my glasses to Bonnie Curns to use next year in Bookkeeping II class, because she needs them very hadly for those small figures. I, MARCIA BINKLEY, do hereby will my bumpy and rather monotony breaking ride to Vanguard and hack each weekday, to any unsuspecting Junior attempting to make the ride. I, BILL BINKLEY, will my height to M.J., it might help him improve his barnball skill a little. I, JUDY OAKLEAF, will my height, 5’0”, to Steve Berlekamp, so that he may walk in the bus without bumping his head on the ceiling. I, RON RYMAN, do hereby will my YMCA membership card to Jeff Fry, who will probably need it in the future to keep him out of trouble. I, RICK SANFORD, will my ability to sprain ankles to Jim Burks because he already has a good start. I, DEB SHELLHAMMER, will my ability to stay out of trouble to anybody that needs it. I, KATHY SMITH, will my ability to stay out of trouble to my brother, Larry, who nees it. I, DENNIS STACY, will my basketball suit to Doug Terry, in hopes. I, KATHY STIGER, will my place at Vanguard to anyone stupid enough to want it and to my brother, Kim, I will my ability to get along with the teachers. I, JOHN SWOPE, will my great abilities with girls to anyone who likes to spend his weekends with the guys. I, GORDON TERRY, being of sound body and mind, will my ability to stay on my feet at Senior Parlies, to Jeannie Bowers, so that she can have fun and stay healthy at the same time. I, OPAL TERRY, will to my brothers, Boyd and Jerry, all my books and willingness to study. I, ALICE ULMER, will my old Senior locker behind the library door to anyone who doesn’t mind being pushed around by a “door” in between classes. I, FRED WILBERT, will my track shoes to anybody that wants a lot of blisters. I, MARTY ZYSK I, will my ‘70’ socks and baggy sweatshirt to Lis DuMond for good luck with next year’s intramural team. I, BRAD FRY, will all my good times in high school to anyone who is willing to go through the punishment I had to, to have them. 34 35 Sounds interesting, tell more! Working hard.
