1969 Trail Old Fort School Old Fort, Ohio Administration and Faculty 5 Foreword Youth is full of life. It is the tears of joy that accompany hard-earned victories; the pat-on-the- back that comes with defeat. Youth is ideas. It is testing new theories and questioning the old ones; trying to grasp concepts of the world and LIFE. Youth is togetherness; the moments spent together planning dances; the feeling of warmth that follows victories as a team. Youth is Old Fort School. Thus, it is within the pages of this volume that beats the heart of that Youth. Our thanks to Mr. Omlor! The squad was comprised of girls only. Brown shirts, white blouses, and gold V-neck sweaters were worn by all. It was a completely new experience for both the staff and myself, so try to overlook some of the mistakes we may have made in putting together this yearbook. I would especially like to thank Kay Sheidler and Kathy Laird who did most of the work in putting this book together. Barbara Burkart did all the ad pages and Pat Beeler and Diane Powell devoted much time to the annual also. Saturday, April 19, 1969, the Junior class presented the play “The Campbells are Coming.” Mr. Fred Good directed this hillbilly comedy which takes place in the Brannigan’s summer cabin in the Ozarks. In the first act we find that Kaye Brannigan has broken her engagement to her hillbilly boyfriend Jeff. When she arrives home from college she announces to her family she is engaged to Kingston Campbell, and that he and his mother are coming to visit the Brannigan family. Act two opens to a completely different scene but the same setting. The Campbells sent word that they would arrive early, and while Kaye was away, the family decided to pretend they were severe hillbillies. During this act the Campbells are continually insulted, thrown around, and made to do terrible things. The act closes as Kaye returns home and the joke backfires. The third act brings the play to a close, and here Kaye decides she cannot marry Kingston because he is tied to his mother’s apron strings too much, and that she still loves Jeff. Ma Brannigan. It was all be¬ cause of that arm that Old Fort won the Ohio Class A State base¬ ball championship. With the first state championship in anything resting on the northern Seneca county community, a parade of approximately 150 cars greeted the returning champions south of Tiffin. The Stockaders and Coach Jim Rosendahl were es¬ corted by the parade for re¬ maining distance to Old Fort Saturday afternoon. Friday night Coach Rosendahl lamented that the 4-1 victory over Seaman that day was the worst game thrown all year by Rau, who finished with 10 vic¬ tories and no losses. The coach blamed the nearly two-week layoff since the last game for Rau’s failure to be sharp. Approximately 24 hours later Rau was completing one of the most brilliant games of his high school career. He held Anna of Shelby county to one hit in a 6-0 victory which decided the state championship. There was no layoff this time and without a days rest Rau was strong all the way. He had a rubdown in the Ohio State training room after the Friday game and Rosendahl elected to use him in the finals. “I actual¬ ly felt better today than yes¬ terday,” stated Rau who also remarked, “I think I could go seven more innings right now.” In winning the championship the Stockaders also became the only unbeaten high school base¬ ball team in Ohio, Class A or AA, without a loss. Rau was never in serious trouble and gave up only one hit. His no - hit bid stayed alive for five innings until Anna sec¬ ond baseman Jerry Clark hit an opposite field single in the sixth ' inning. Clark and a run¬ ner who reached first on an er¬ ror in the seeond inning were the only Anna base-runners. No one got beyond first. The Stock- Only Unbeaten In State Ohio Baseball Crown ader ace struck out seven and did not issue a walk with his near - perfect control. Coach Rosendahl explained he did not wish to break up a win¬ ning combination as part of his reasoning in coming back with Rau in the final. He also could have called upon Doug Pence, also an unbeaten hurler. Pence and Rau alternated at shortstop when not pitching. “Pence v has been doing a great job at short and Rau said his arm felt good and wanted to try,” explained Rosendahl of his decision to go with the same lineup which won in the semifinals. As a result of the decision Stockader outfield¬ ers had only two, chances to handle the ball in the game. On the offense Old Fort scored three runs in the first inning on singles by Steve Cleveland. Doug Pence, a passed ball, one of two hits by Rau and an Anna throwing error. Mike Hoke scored the fourth Old Fort run in the fourth when tripled and tallied on Dick Hull’s sacrifice fly. Final runs came in the fifth on Rau’s double, Ed Cantu’s single, a passed ball and an er¬ ror.
