The Class of 1968 wishes to dedicate this issue of “The Trail” to Mr. Paul Gillmor. Mr. Gillmor has been a member of the Old Fort School Board since January, 1948. Since January, 1965 he has been president of the Old Fort Board of Education. He has always been very interested in Old Fort School and has worked hard to make it one of the best schools in Seneca County. Our special thanks to Mr. Gillmor for presenting ground to Old Fort School to be used as an Athletic Field. It is hoped, Mr. Gillmor, that by this dedication we may express in a small way our appreciation for your many kind¬ nesses and hard work. 4 Seated: Mervin Ransom, John Buskirk, President; Alton Zimmerman, Vice-President. Standing: Donald Pence, Paul Molyet. On January 9, 1968, The Old Fort Board of Education reorganized. Mr. John Buskirk was elected President and Mr. Alton Zimmerman, Vice-President. The first Monday night of each month is the regular meeting time for the Board. With the help of a cup of coffee and rolls or doughnuts the men attempt to solve the many complex problems facing them. Many additional meetings have been held by Old Fort’s Board of Education. Re-organization is being considered very strongly. The Old Fort School Community owes much to these men who willingly devote much extra time to the business of making Old Fort School a good school. The community has expressed its loyalty many times by supporting and pass¬ ing every school tax levy presented. The Old Fort Board of Education is very grateful and appreciates the community’s trust in the members. This ex¬ cellent cooperation by every one has made Old Fort School one of the best schools in Seneca County. upermiembnt • V MR. ROGER E. GODDARD, Superintendent of Old Fort School, has been here for five years. He has a B.S. in Edu¬ cation from Defiance College, and a M.S. in Education from Indiana University. He has taken and is now taking additional work at Toledo University for a Ph. D. Degree. He also took post-graduate work at Miami University. Mr. Goddard’s name appeared in Who’s Who for the year 1966-1967. An honor he so well deserves. A well-planned curriculm has been instituted by Mr. Goddard. A very good science and mathematics program has been established. New furniture for several rooms has been bought. The migrant program has been expanded. In the fall of 1967 Old Fort School was the educational center for all migrant students in the Green Springs, Bettsville, and Old Fort Districts. Due to Mr. Goddard’s excellent guidance, planning, and hard work. Old Fort School continues to hold a very important and respected place with all schools in the surrounding territory. Old Fort School is one of the two Seneca County Schools who are members of the North Central Association. The class of 1968 expresses a hearty “thank you” to Mr. Goddard for his foresight, guidance and excellent leadership. 7 “Principals MRS. HELEN M. The play itself, concerned Newton Fuller (Kenneth Ulmer), his wife Annabelle, (Deborah Semer) and his daughter Madge (Susan Mestrez) and their lives as they moved from a big city apartment to a dilapidated old house in the country. It was truly a comedy from the word go with Farmer Kimber (Ronnie Rau) taking advantage of a city slicker’s lack of rural knowledge, cook Katie (Jennie Hersh) combating cows in her kitchen, Maid Hester (Irma Cantu) in an unmarried uproar, nephew Ray¬ mond (Stephen Haugh) as a nasty little rascal, Mrs. Douglas (Mary Cunningham) as the lady next door, actor Clayton Evans (Douglas Colgate) and his actress wife Rena Leslie (Susan Shaf¬ fer) having typical Hollywood romance problems, Sue Barrington (Paula Sheidler), Miss Wilcox (Cecelia Tolento), Tommy (William Schwenke) and Leggett (Stephen Magers) as Madge’s friends who drop in for a fun (?) weekend, Mr. Prescott (Patrick Chaney) trying to own the en¬ tire territory, Steve (Douglas Pence) Madge’s boyfriend who tries to be understanding and rich Uncle Stanley (Jake Wonder) who really doesn’t have a penny. However, all’s well that ends well and the play was a great success. THE VERY OPPOSITE SEX On November 3, 1967, the Senior Class presented their Senior Play, “The Very Opposite Sex.” Mrs. Sandra Best directed this three-act comedy. The play opens on a sidewalk near the high school in Weston, Minnesota. Binky Blaine (Susan Shaffer) a senior, has just moved to Weston. She meets Emma (Janice Joseph), one of the brainy students of Weston. Roger Andrews (Douglas Pence), a very popular male-type stu¬ dent, and his sister Sooky (Sue Mestrez) and friend Mabes (Alberta Smith) who fill Binky in on Roger and Vera (Jean Sheidler), the girl he dates. Binky decides to join Junior Achievement when she finds out Roger is a very active member. Binky makes many friends in Junior Achievement: Mr. McGovern (Jon Williman) is the ad¬ visor, Sally (Sharon Puffenberger), Horse (Gerald Wilbert), Phil (James Hessick), Rosey (Cecelia Tolento), Joey (Ronnie Shireman), and Nancy (Irma Cantu). At the first meeting, Binky makes a big sale to a buyer from a large department store. Miss Adrian (Debbie Semer). However, Roger discovers it was Binky’s father (Pat Chaney) who fired his mother (Mary Cunningham). After a big fight, Binky decides to transfer from Roger’s company to the Horsefeathers Com¬ pany. In the spring, when it is near closing time for the J.A. companies, Horsefeathers is in last place. However, they discover that their feathers can be made into dog food. On the night of the large banquet, which is attended by the members’ parents: Phil’s father (Steve Haugh), Rosey’s dad (Jake Wonder), Sally’s mother (Teri Speller), Vera’s mother (Jennie Hersh), and Mr. Adrian (Greg Huber); Binky’s company is nearly arrested by a policeman (Charles Fausey) for running her father’s laundry. lift} J H i 3 U1M (Atm i S j , ... • M Nanette Byrne Susie Shaffer Mike Bethel Sue Mestrez Teri Speller Jim Puffenberger Cherie Recker Bill Schwenke Greg Huber Jean Sheidler Chuck Fausey Steve Haugh j t J 1 1 vrt ' Mary Ellen Pam Keckler Cunningham Rod Gillmar Irma Cantu Jon Williman Doug Colgate Photograph not available Steve Magers Cecelia Talento Frank Saldivar Pat Chaney Class |Mtstoru On September 4, 1956, forty-seven first graders gathered in either Mrs. Biddle or Mrs. Mosier’s room for one full day of school. Of these forty-seven, with new additions and withdrawals, forty of us remain. They are as follows: Michael Bethel, Nanette Byrne, Irma Cantu, Ben Chaffee, Patrick Chaney, Douglas Colgate, Mary Ellen Cunningham, Charles Fausey, Rodney Gillmor, Steven Haugh, Jennie Hersh, James Hessick, Gregory Huber, Cindy Huston, Janice Joseph, Pamela Keckler, Steven Magers, Susan Nighswander, Douglas Pence, James Puffenberger, Sharon Puffenberger, Ronnie Rau, Cheryl Recker, Frank Saldivar, William Schwenke, Deborah Semer, Susan Shaffer, Paula Sheidler, Ronald Shireman, Alberta Smith, David Snyder, Teresa Speller, Karen Staley, Cecelia Tolento, Kenneth Ulmer, Gerald Wilbert, Jon Williman, Jacob Wonder, and Fyle Zyski. Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Witter led us through our second year of school. Our new members this year were Rachel Daugen- bach, Irma Cantu, Sharon Propes, Rex Mellott, Ronald Harpe, Joey Mesnard, Jackie Mesnard, Patsy Nycum, Marvin Daven¬ port, Jerry Cook, and Raymond Daugenbaugh. As third graders we learned many exciting things and had a chance to get to know each other better. We were also taught a different type of writing. This was fun. The teachers who helped us through this year were Mrs. Gibson and Miss Blossom. Our new members were Paulette Mesnard, Nancy Perry, Claudette Mesnard, Tom Brandyberry, Daniel Webb, Margaret Oliver, John Brown, and Sandy Ison. In our fourth year of school Mrs. Sanford and Mrs. Snyder had the privilege of leading us. We had no new members this year. Mrs. Baxa and Mr. Bare led us through the fifth grade. This year Sharon Puffenberger, Alberta Smith, Frances Flores, Linda Terry, Larry Adams, and William Bintz was added to our class. In our last year of elementary school Mrs. Cloutier and Mr. Shiley helped us so we could make our way to Junior High. Mike Hemmerly, Debra Ford, James Puffenberger, and Margaret Zablocki joined us this year. In Junior High we learned many different things. We also felt older because we were seventh graders and were in with high school kids. We also had a chance to participate in many school activities. During this year we won a magazine sale. The prize was a class trip. We all had chosen to go to Put-In-Bay. Our advisor was Mr. Burton. The class officers were Tom Brandyberry, President; Paula Sheidler, Vice-President; Mary Ellen Cunningham, Treasurer; and Cheryl Recker, Secretary. Mr. Lutz and Miss Ziegler directed us through the eighth grade. This was our big step towards high school. Barbara Rau, Nancy Snell, Glen and Dennis Morton, Robert Hites, Lyle Zyski, Terry Calvert, and Cindy Huston helped increase our class. This year we won another magazine sale and again received a class trip as a prize. This time we chose to go to Columbus airport and the School for the Blind in Columbus, Ohio. The class officers were Paula Sheidler, President; David Snyder, Vice- President; Mary Ellen Cunningham, Secretary; and Deborah Semer, Treasurer. Mr. Lutz urged us forward through our freshman year, too. As the saying goes “third time’s a charm,” well, for the third time we won another magazine sale and this time we went to Toledo. Our new members this year were Pam Keckler and Ken Ulmer. Our class officers were Paula Sheidler, President; David Snyder, Vice-President; Mary Ellen Cunningham, Secretary- Treasurer. As sophomores Mr. Brueggemeier and Mrs. Wilier were our class advisors. This year the class officers included President Paula Sheidler; Vice-President Ken Ulmer; and Secretary-Treasurer William Schwenke. Robert Baxter and William Schwenke were our only new members. Mr. Austermiller and Mrs. Newman helped us through our junior year of high school. This along with our senior year, was the most exciting year in high school. Our money-making projects were a sweatshirt sale, a car wash, our Junior Class Play, (The play was entitled “George Wash¬ ington Slept Here,” directed by Mrs. Jerry Sweeney), and we sold programs at the basketball games. With the money earned we sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom. This was held at Lehman’s Lodge in Fostoria. The theme for it was “Blue Hawaii.” The class officers were President Kenneth Ulmer; Vice-President Paula Sheidler; Secretary Cheryl Recker; and Treasurer Mary Ellen Cunningham. We had only one new member during this year, Jon Williman. Now in our senior year we look back at all the wonderful things that have happened to us through the twelve years we spent at Old Fort School. As seniors, Mr. Austermiller and many of the teachers led us on our way to greater opportunities in life. We also earned money in our senior year. Our money-making projects were a sweatshirt sale, selling programs at the basket¬ ball games, running the concession stand, and our Senior Class Play entitled “The Very Opposite Sex” directed by Mrs. Sandra Best. This year our class officers were Kenneth Ulmer, President; Paula Sheidler, Vice-President; Cheryl Recker, Secretary; and Jon Williman, Treasurer. By Alberta Smith and Sharon Puffenberger 35 (Ulass ProjjJjeqi With the growing population of Old Fort City, many new businesses are developing. STEVE MAGERS, the newly elected mayor, has appointed JIM HESSICK as the town cop, and JON WILLIMAN as the Justice of the Peace. The Old Fort Pickle Station is a real large company now with FRANK SALDIVAR as the manager. With farmers like ROD GILLMOR and JERRY WILBERT, the company is the largest in the area. As we traveled on through the city, the taxi cab driver, GREG HUBER, stopped and showed us the school. Employed there was none other than SUSIE SHAFFER and DEBBIE SEMER. All ot a sudden a loud noise was heard. A yellow Corvette driven by JEAN SHEIDLER came sliding around the corner with state patrolman DOUG COLGATE chasing her. Shireman s Garage was just down the street so we took our car down to have it serviced. The owner and operator was none other than RON SHIREMAN and chief mechanic was LYLE ZYSKI. Their private secretary was IRMA CANTU. Sports have played a big part in our city. RON RAU is now coaching the Old Fort Jets, with his all pro halfback DOUG PENCE leading the team. Helping Ron are his chief scouts STEVE HAUGH and PAT CHANEY. Old Fort is a real swinging place with CHUCK FAUSEY operating a teen-age night club. KEN ULMER and JIM PUFF- ENBERGER are the two waiters. JAKE WONDER, DAVE SNYDER, BILL SCHWENKE, and BEN CHAFFEE had the entertainment with their own band. On the sixteenth floor of the Old Fort State Building, NANETTE BYRNE and SUE MESTREZ are employed as secre¬ taries. On the next floor JANICE JOSEPH and TERESA SPELLER are running a beauty parlor. As we move on we see JENNIE HERSH as the clerk at the Old Fort Store. KAREN STALEY is the bookkeeper there. CHERYL RECKER and MARY CUNNINGHAM are running a nursing school with SHARON PUFFENBERGER and ALBERTA SMITH employed there as secretaries. Now we turn and go west and find another Beauty Shop owned by CINDY HUSTON. She has three girls that we know working for her. They are PAM KECKLER, CECELIA TOLENTO, and SUE NIGHSWANDER. We stopped and talked with them for awhile. Then we saw a barber shop and decided that we needed a hair cut. We walked across the street and found that MIKE BETHEL was the owner. After getting our hair cut and chatting with Mike for a short time; it was time to leave the big city of Old Fort and go back to the jungle. Dennis Stacy, Jim Hessick, Steve Main. The Old Fort Chapter of the Future Farmer’s of America were well represented at the 1967-F.F.A. State Dairy Judging at the Division of the Ohio State University Agriculture Department in Columbus, Ohio, on May 6, 1967 by Steve Main (a se¬ nior of 1967, who placed first in the Seneca County F.F.A. Dairy Judging Contest), Dennis Stacy (a Freshman in 1967,and second on the County Team), and James Hessick (a Junior in 1967, taking the place of Jan Austermiller, who was on the Land Judging team, which conflicted with Dairy judging and the General Livestock Judging team). All four boys placed in the top three in the county General Livestock Contest. But someone on the Dairy Team couldn’t be on the General Team. The Dairy Team took first place in the annual state contest held at Ohio State University. The team scored 1,173 points out of a possible 1,500. James Hessick scored 443 out of a possible 500, which made him the highest individual in the state. Stacy scored 374 and Main 356. The contestants judged one ring each of Ayrshires, Brown Swiss, Guernseys, Holsteins, and Jerseys. Questions were asked on the first three rings and pedigrees were judged on the Holsteins and Jerseys. After winning the Ohio contest, the Old Fort team had ttfe honor of representing the Ohio F.F.A. at the National F.F.A. Contest held in connection with the National Dairy Cattle Congress at Waterloo, Iowa on September 26, 1967. Steve Main was unable to attend the National Contest, so Gilbert Lemmerman (a Sophomore in 1967 was chosen by the Vo. Ag. instruc¬ tor, Mr. Hugh H. Austemiller.) Mr. Austemiller drove to Waterloo. Gilbert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lemmerman. James Hessick received a gold individual award, while Dennis Stacy and Gilbert Lemmerman received silver individual awards. James was in the top ten of the National Contest. There were forty-one states represented, with ten of the plates receiving gold awards, including the Old Fort team repre¬ senting Ohio. The team from Maryland won the contest. Indiana and Oklahoma had two gold awards and one silver award. This made them second and third. Ohio and North Carolina had one gold and two silver awards, which made them in fourth and fifth places.Individual scores are not given out at the National Contest. The contest consisted of placing six rings of dairy cattle on dairy type and then placing three rings of dairy cattle cn dairy type and production records including pedigrees. Steve Main is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Main; Dennis Stacy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Stacy; James Hessick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hessick. 75 Seated: Sharon Murray, Reporter; Karen Stout, Chorister; Pat Beeler, Treasurer; Beverly Roth, Vice-President; Jennie Hersh, President; Janice Joseph, Secretary; Teresa Speller, Historian; Irma Cantu, Parliamentarian; Mrs. Watson, Ad¬ visor. The team had five returning lettermen of which four were starters last season. In the 1967 Holiday Tournament at Ada, Old Fort received a very nice trophy. This year was almost a repeat of last year. We played the same team in the finals. This time we defeated them with an impressive victory. Compliments of BALLREICH BROS. At the present time Old Fort Reserves have a fine record of 16-1 with one game remaining on their schedule (Green Springs). These boys have done a fine job this year improving individually and as a team. Probably the highlights of their season were the wins over Bloomville and Attica on their own courts. Old Fort was ahead 25 to 30 points during most of the games. These boys are to be commended for their fine attitude and their hustle and spirit during the 1967-1968 season. Without the loyal support of the advertisers, patrons, and sponsors, the 1968 edition of “The Trail” would not have been the success that it is. We would also like to thank everyone who purchased yearbooks. It is our hope that we have shown the various activities and achievements of the Old Fort students, increased the features in this yearbook, and aroused everyone’s interest in reading and looking at this edition of the 1968 “Trail”.
