Now, as Seniors of the Class of 67, we wish to present THE TRAIL. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed compiling it. Our thanks to the many PATIENT people who have helped us. It is h oped in some small way this dedication may convey to Mr. Austermiller our most sincere thanks for all of the many hours he has spent helping students, building “props” for plays, helping with the Junior-Senior Prom, and in general doing many constructive projects around Old Fort High School. A most hearty “thank you” Mr. Austermiller. 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION The Old Fort Board of Education meets the first Monday night of each month. The problems for these men to solve become more complex each year. A cup of coffee, rolls, and doughnuts help much to stimulate and sharpen their think¬ ing. Besides the Board of Education’s monthly meetings this year; additional meetings have been held with Green Springs Board of Education and Bettsville ' s Board of Education. Due to the Purdy Report reorganization is being considered. Mucy repair work and equipment have been bought this year. New tables and chairs were placed in the study hall to replace the old desks. The same was done in the Language Room, Science Department, and Commercial Room. A trampoline, wrestling and tumbling mats and lockers were bought for the Physical Education Department. All Equipment Purchases and Capital Improvements for the school year 1966-1967 cost approximately $28,385. About $5, 000 of this will be paid from Capital Improvements. Old Fort School Community has been very loyal in supporting the decisions of the Board of Education. For this the members of the Board are grateful and appreciate your trust in them. Each Board Member and the Clerk devote many hours and thoughts willingly and freely to try to make Old Fort School one of the best schools in Seneca County. 6 r SUPERINTENDENT MR. ROGER E. GODDARD, Superintendent of Old Fort School, has been here for four years. He has a B.S. in Ed¬ ucation from Defiance College, and a M.S. in Education from Indiana University. He has taken much additional work toward a Ph.D. Degree from Toledo University. Mr. Goddard’s name appeared in Who’s Who for the year 1966-1967. An honor he so well deserves. Many improvements and additions have been made to the Old Fort School Physical Plant as well as to the Curriculum at Old Fort School. The old building has been completely overhauled both outside and inside. A well-planned curriculum and an excellent program has been instituted by him. A very good science and mathematics program has been established. Due to Mr. Goddard’s excellent guidance, planning, and hard work, Old Fort School continues to hold a very important and respected place with all schools in the surrounding territory. The Class of 1967 expresses a hearty “thank you” to Mr. Goddard for his foresight and guidance. 7 PRINCIPALS MRS. HELEN M. NEWMAN Mrs. Newman has a B.S. from Bowling Green State University. She also has many hours of additional work from Ohio State University, Heidelberg, and correspondence work from Indiana University. For twenty-four years she has been Principal of Old Fort High School. She is one of the few women high school principals in the state of Ohio. Besides the duties involved as Principal, she also teaches bookkeeping, two seventh grade classes of Mathematics, and has two study halls. She is advisor for the Junior Class, Student Council, Annual, Cheerleaders, Honor Society, and is director of the One- Act Play. MR. LARRY SHELT Mr. Shelt has a B. A. from Heidelberg College and has taken additional work at Toledo University for a Master’s Degree. He was Elementary Principal and taught two classes of Seventh Grade English the first semester. This was Mr. Shelt’s third year at Old Fort School. During the summer months, Mr. Shelt also directed the Migrant School and the Remedial Reading Program, besides teaching an English class himself. Old Fort School has become quite well-known for its program for migrant children. The English and reading programs have become quite popular. All of this is due to the excellent guidance of Mr. Shelt. The Elementary Program during the year has been very well planned and carried out. Old Fort School will suffer a great loss at the resignation of Mr. Shelt; but we all wish him much success in his new job as Educational Consultant for Follett Publishing Company. X MRS. (continued) V CLASS PROPHECY SETTING: OLD FORT CITY IN THE As we drive down Main Street, we see anew building, the city ' s Municipal Hospital. Some of the employees were our fellow high school classmates. The unique design of the hospital was the work of ERNIE WISE, a leader in modern architecture. As we enter this beautiful building, we see on our left, the office of the leading psychiatrist, JOYCE BOCK and her secretary, JOANN GEGORSKI. Here comes a few more of our alumni, now nurses, PAMELA BEELER, LINDA DEMONTE, ANNETTA HESSICK and their su¬ pervisor JANE RANSOM. After touring the wards, we walked outside and caught a taxi driven by WAYNE BINTZ. Just as a side note, we were picked up by the city’s constable, HENRY GARZA and his assistant BOB GARZA for speeding. After a short delay, we proceeded to the new co llege. Here, we found working as teachers, MARY KOH¬ LENBERG, BETH SCHWENKE, JAN AUSTERMILLER and JOE PITTS. Here comes Professor DOUG DUNLAP and coach BUZZ DUMOND with their arms around the Physical Education teacher SUE WHITMAN. An interesting side note is that all the wiring was done by DAVID TREMBATH, an excellent electrician. Next on our agenda is the new office building which is seventy-five stories high. On the first floor is a teen center with music by LONNY FRY and his band The Fry Guys ' . ' We see sitting at the tables CLARENCE STRAIT and RAY YAROS wait¬ ing on their sodas which are being prepared by a great soda jerk, BOB MYRES. On the next floor is STEVE MAIN’s office, the FBI agent for this district. Next to him is the new Beau¬ ty Parlor run by BEVERLY OAKLEAF. Going to the third floor, we find the navy recruit¬ ing office now being occupied by Staff-Sergeant TED COBLE. And there is the office of that known journalist SUE CASSLEMAN. The next floor is the floor for agriculture. Here we find the office of TIM BERLEKAMP, leading con¬ servationist, and his secretary LINDA RENNINGER. Right now two sucessful farmers are interviewing Tim, MAUR¬ ICE TERRY and GARY SHARP. YEAR 1980; POPULATION 35 The remainder of the building is leased to the known chemical engineer, CHRIS MC DONALD. His lab technician SUE POWELL and his secretary AN¬ ITA SALDIVAR are working to develop two new products One to make sewing easier for seamtress DORIS STACY and the other for blacksmith SKIP NOWAK to make plastic horseshoes. With a population like this, Old Fort City will prosper even more in years to come. Be sure and visit us in years to come. Witnesses: Faelkao Ylreveb Ztnib Enyaw IE CLASS HISTORY On September 6, 1955, forty-eight bewildered first graders embarked on their first adventure in educa¬ tion. Of the original forty-eight, twenty-four remain to graduate. They are: Jan Austermiller, Tim Berele- kamp, Joyce Bock, Susan Casselman, Ted Coble, Linda DeMonte, Douglas Dunlap, Dale DuMond, Lonny Fry, JoAnn Gegorski, Annetta Hessick, Mary Jane Kohlen¬ berg, Steve Main, Chris McDonald, Lester Nowak, Bev- ely Oakleaf, Susan Powell, Jane Ransom, Linda Rennin- ger, Doris Stacy, Clarence Strait, Maurice Terry, Susan Whitman, and Ernest Wise. Miss Day and Mrs. Mosier started us on our way. During the year, Miss Day became Mrs. Biddle. This was an overwhelming year, because it presented many first experiences, such as: Riding a bus, eating in a cafeteria, sharing with new friends, and learning to sit quietly. One of our most exciting experiences was our trip to the Toledo Zoo. Our second grade teachers were Miss Badertscher and Mrs. Witter. Writing the alphabet was one of our painstaking chores. Our trip to the Maple Sugar Camp was one of our big thrills. The next year, Mrs. Beebe and Mrs. Young were our teachers. Two new additions to the class who re¬ main to graduate were Larry Joe Pitts and Ray Yaros. Leading us through the fourth grade were Mrs. San¬ ford and Mrs. Snyder. We took a trip to Hayes Memo¬ rial that year. There was quite a bit of rivalry between the classes for the weekly spelling championship. Pam¬ ela Beeler, Robert Garza, and Robert Myers joined our class. Mr. Bare and Mrs. Baxa taught our fifth grade classes. Our extra activities included making plaster of paris figures and beanies in the school colors. Henry Garza and Anita Saldivar were new class members. Taking us through the sixth grade were Mr. Buck- ham and Mrs. Cl outier. Entering the class that year was Wayne Bintz. Seventh grade brought a whole realm of new ex¬ periences. We gave our first assembly before the high school and junior high, depicting a typical day in an old-time school. Mr. Canterbury was our advisor.Join¬ ing our class were Gary Sharp and Steve Main, who re¬ turned after an absence of five years. Our eighth grade counselor was Mr. Mehaffey. David Trembath was the only new addition. After re¬ ceiving our eighth-grade diplomas, we were passed into the ninth grade. Mrs. Martin ushered us into high school as our freshman advisor. Our class officers were: Ernest Wise, President: Larry Joe Pitts, Vice-President; Steve Main, Secretary; Lonny Fry, Treasurer. In the tenth grade our class advisor was Mr.Brueg- gemeier. Our class officers were: Larry Pitts, President; Ernest Wise, Vice-President; Skip Nowak, Secretary- Treasurer. Mr. Mehaffey and Mrs. Newman were our class advisors in the eleventh grade. Beth Schwenke joined our class that year. Our class officers were: Larry Joe Pitts, President; Ernest Wise, Vice-President; J o y c e Bock, Secretary; Lester Nowak, Treasurer. Two events were outstanding that year--our class play and the Jun¬ ior-Senior Prom. We all participated in our play, The Teahouse of the August Moon. The theme for the Junior-Senior Prom was Paris By Night. We finally arrived as seniors. Mr. Mehaffey and Mr. Goddard guided our class throughout the year, Mrs. Newman assisted. Our class officers were: Jan Auster¬ miller, President; Douglas Dunlap, Vice-President; Susan Powell, Secretary; Ernest Wise, Treasurer. We presented Cheaper By the Dozen. In contrast to first grade, everything we did our senior year was for the last time. Now we are on the threshold of a new experience. The careful, thoughtful, and persistent guidance our parents and our teachers have given us will serve to stimulate us the rest of our lives. Mary Jane Kohlenberg Jane Ransom 33 OUR JUNIOR PLAY On April 15 and 16 of our Junior Year, we presented THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON. It was directed by Mr. John Weglian. Captain Fisby, constantly plagued by bad luck, is sent by Colonel Purdy to reconstruct an Okinawan village after World War II. As a gift he is given a geisha girl, Lotus Blossom. His shrewd interpreter, Sakini, persuades him to build a teahouse with supplies sent for construction of a school house. The villagers are made wealthy by selling sweet potato brandy to service men. The plot is discovered and Fisby is ordered to leave Kolbiki. However, hust as he is about to go, word comes from Washington that Congressmen are coming to see the successful village. Things are returned to their proper places and Fisby is allowed to stay. OUR SENIOR PLAY The Frank Gilberth family moved to Old Fort on Friday the 28th of October. Yes, the senior class presented the public with CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. Our director was Miss Sue Tennant. Frank Gilberth was a traveling man, always trying to save time. Please tell our sponsors that you saw their name in The T rail. Whenever possible may the citizens of Old Fort School Com¬ munity patronzie these sponsors. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The Class of ' 67 of Old Fort High School wishes to express its deep appreciation for the willing help given to them. The loyal support of advertisers, patrons, and sponsors made this edition possible. Without their support we would have had to curtail some of the features that make our yearbook more interesting and desirable. Also, thanks to all who have purchased yearbooks. We are very grateful for your help. This year ' s issue of The Trail was sold to three hundred families. It will be read by many times that number of people interested in the activities and accomplishments of the student body at Old Fort Local School. May God bless each of you!
