EE 2 DEDICATIGN In vi 'u QXX QQQ Z1 To Marion Robinson we of the Senior Class dedicate this 1951 yearbook. Miss Robinson has devoted a total of 26 years to the teach- ing profession. She taught at a country school before becoming an elementary and later a high school teacher here. Her membership in the Alpha Sigma Chapter of the National Teachers' Sorority is due recognition of her outstanding work in the field of education. We, the students of Old Fort, will always rem- ember Miss Robinson as a patient instructor who helped us realize the value of history texts. By this small token, we express our appreciation for her many years of service. In addition to her duties as office receptionist, she acts as cashier in the cafeteria and assistant to the teachers whenever they need help. During this school year, Mollie Stiger, Mae Karg, and Doris May served as our very competent cooks. Their efforts to satisfy our hearty appetites were greatly appreciated at lunch time. The man who shouldered the great responsibility of keeping our busses rolling throughout this year was Bill Elmers, our bus mechanic. For the past severalyears Luther Flack has served as our school Custodian. He is to be commended for his fine work in the never-ending task of keeping the building in the best of condition. Our seven busses this year were drivenbyEu1a Flumerfelt, Glendon May, Ray Murphy, J. Lehr Swihart, Willis Fitzgerald, Evan Lynch, and Arthur Mehaffey. To these people we owe the safe transportation of the students to and from school. Anna B. Miller launched us on our journey by helping us to master our three R's. We were very proud of our toy or- chestra, and equally ashamed of the times we stood in the hallas punishment for some misdeed. This, too, was the year we planted a tree in the school yard on Arbor Day. Eleven years later as seniors we repeated this Arbor Day customby plant- ing two more trees on the school grounds. The following year Zelma ZeisMullins refereed our nu me r ou s quarrels and squabbles while helping us add to our small store of knowledge. We were ushered through the third and fourth grades by Connie Ryman Michael and Edith Zink respectively. The next two years found us situated on the third floor of the building, and as a result we began to feelrather 'grown-up . Mary Alice Riehm Sanford and Mrs. Nor- man Heilman alternated as our teachers during our fifth year for the purpose of fa miliarizing us with thehigh school routine of studying. The next year was similar to our fifth with the exception that Junne Dick shared teaching respon- sibilities with Mrs. Heilman. Nextcame the junior high school rush. Arthur Mehaffey acted as adviser and guide as we became accustomed to the confusing routine of classes. We won the magazine drive this year and were re- warded with a party. Our eighth year , with Marion Robinson as home room teacher, was highlighted by the scholarship te sts. Our efforts were not in vain as we cap- tured first-place honor in addition to placing several others in the upper twenty- five per cent of the county. After proving that we were capable of handling high school work, we were duly promoted. The seniors welcomed us with the Freshman Initiation which proved to be less humiliating than we had feared. We found time to compete in music, sports, and speech events with our upperclassmen and again won the magazine campaign. J. Lehr Swihart was our adviser. During our sophomore year Ruth Slot- terbeck was our adviser, and for the first time our home room was in the study hall. As in all four years,we took the com- monly-called punch tests and wondered as to their value. Our activities increased as did our competitive spirit. Aclass Hal- loween party and treasure hunt was held despite stormy weather. Our junior year found us trying hard to keep both studies and extracurricular ac- tivities going. This year we proudly pre- sented our first play, Growing Pains. Stage fright and inexperience were only two of the problems Mary Minick Lang, our director, coped withbefore this pro- duction was staged. We selected our class rings and banqueted the seniors with an April Showers' theme , all under the sup- ervision of our advisers, Helen Newman and H. H. Austermiller. At baccalaureate and commencement we ushered the sen- iors through their concluding high school ceremonies. And then we were seniors. We had our pictures taken,decided to publish an annual, and had a senior play. Dolores Green, also one of our advisers,directed our efforts in producing the play, The Adorable Imp . We were the honored guests at this year's Junior-Senior Ban- quet. On our senior trip to Cleveland, we were accompanied by J. Lehr Swihart, our other adviser. C la s s flow er and colors, caps and gowns, and diplomas were only a part of our long-awaited bac- calaureate and c omme nc e ment pro- grams. We finished our twelve years of progress on the 'trail' , firmly believing in our class motto, 'Character is the cor- nerstone of success . As we leave the school that has been our life for these twelve years, we leave the guidance of patient teachers, but take with us many memories. We wonder how Old Father Time has treated them. After some deep research, we compile a nearly com- plete list of the whereabouts ofthose 21. We make plans to visit them and hope to pick up news of the other few along the way. Well, here goes! We receive a tip, decide to accept it, and travel first of all to New Riegel. Our tip pays off as-we find Joe Darr settled down here in the trucking business. It might be best to have our new 1930 Ford checked before going too far, so as we reach the metropolis of Slabtown we pull in- to a garage with Fry, Fry, 8: Fry above the door. Howard Fry, the head mechanic, tells us it will take 8 hours to check the car. Meanwhile, we venture to a movie and no- tice that the feature is 'Hopalong Hade , sta r r ing none other than our long-lost classmate, Keith. Nearby Lima, Ohio at- tracts us, so after the movie we visit one of its night clubs. We're in luck as apretty blond waitress fwe remember her as Norma Voelzkel takes our order and says that Lynn Wonder, the one-man band, will play in a few minutes. We hear Lynn, get our car, and proceed down the road at the moderate rate of 25 miles per hour. We encounter trouble on the outskirts of Marion where Sergeant Bill Baxter arrests us for speeding. After appearing before Judge Otto Lynch who fines us, we hurry on,wishing we hadn't found these two classmates. The next possibility on our list is Pros- pect, Ohio. There, about midnight, we find and patronize Lynch's Rooming House operated by Carol Lynch. The next day we pull intoa gas station to have our limousine washed and are surprised to find Bob Mc- Cormack as the attendant. Following Bob's advice, we stop in Columbus and lunch at B1ue's Bubble Bar. The proprietress is, of course,lviar1a J'ean,who now manages 15 restaurants. We head next for Tennessee. There ina small town called Strawberry Plains we visit Nancy Lucas and Nellie Pletcher at their beauty salon. We get our hair waved in hopes of attracting the Southern people. The girls do a good job, but all we can at- tract is Paul LaFountaine. This we do near Chattanooga as he's hitchhiking back to army camp. We notice his bravery metal which he claims he received for riding in a jeep with a Wac. We leave Paul and in Atlanta, Ge or gia stop for some cooler clothes. Thelma Mellott has a very nice selection in her store but the prices are a trifle outrageous. Our next stop is Tampa, Florida. We decide to go tuna fishing and so hire a guide and boat. Ralph Zimmerman as the guide shows us a good day. Going farther southwe find lvfary Alice Oakleaf in the Everglades raising alligators and mak- ing purses. Five classmates remain to be found as we start our return trip. Driving over rug- ged mountain trails pays off as we finally arrive in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia. Here we find Janita Riedel running a hillbilly school to teach singing. We continue on to Washington, D. C. and the White House. There we find Jean Bonnell as the President's secretary and Don Wise as his trusty chauffeur. Among the re- porters waiting for the President we find Marilyn Fenstermaker who has been inter- viewing him for five years. We leave Washington, nearly forgetting there is one classmate we have yet to see. But not for long! Suddenly our poor Ford is struck from the rear by a lady driver. We are less angry when we learn she's Ruth Doran, now a stewardress on the North American Airlines. By the way she was driving, we believe she'll catch that plane she missed. Back to the state of Ohio and finally Old Fort, we sigh with relief after all the con- fusion. The Old Fort Chapter of Future Farmers of America was very active this year. The juniors and seniors went with the republic Chapter to Chicago for a three-day stay in November. The occasion was to attend the National Livestock Exposition. While there the boys also visited the Board of Trade Building and took tours through the meat packing plants. The local chapter entered the county judging contest in which they did very well. The boys received second in general livestock and first in dairy judging. Their combined score was high enough to take first place in the contest. The judging team also participated in the state judging contest at Columbus. The c ha pte r parliamentary pro- cedure team received a gold award at the county parliamentary procedure con- test. Walter Joseph represented the Old Fort F.F.A. in the District Public Speak- ing Contest this year. He placed first there and went on to the state contest. Other activities that the local chapter participated in were the County Safety contest, CountyPest Hunt and the County F.F.A. Basketball League. The Prince of Peace contestants received preliminary experience when they took part in the F r e m ont Invitational Tournament. After three rounds of competition, Old Fort students claimed top honors. Janita won the first place trophy and Otto, the second place trophy. the Mourners, he realizes that the opinions expressed about him when he lived were in direct contrast to those given now after his death. His many faults are openly discussed, but lacking the ability to communicate with mortals, he is unable to defend himself. The coup de grace ffinal blowl comes when he hears-his fiancee agree with the others, that perhaps it is just as well that he has died. The cast placed first in the preliminary triangle at Old Fort on March 7. On March 14 they received the first-place trophy in the finals of the county one-act play tourna- ment at Melmore. Then the squad entered the Sylvania Tournament and brought home the DivisionA trophy. The de- baters climaxed the season by tying with Akron Bath for third in the state tourney which included fifteen teams. The issue debated for this season was 'That the American people should reject the welfare state . Walter Joseph and Kenneth Watson upheld the affirmative view while Under the direction of Ivirs. In the county tourney the lads played three games. In the first game they overcame Bloomville 8 to 0. The boys collected but one hit as they beat New Riegel 3 to Z in the semi-finals and then became county baseball champs by defeating Bettsville 5 to 1. After a long layoff over the winter the lads started spring training. They continued their tourney play when they met Rossford in the district contest at Clyde. Tb.is,their first game, left them on top bythe score of 9 to 6. They were next matched against Weston in the semi-finals. Their 8 to 4 victorybrought them to the all-important finals.. Here the Old Fort Stockaders pulled an upsetand beat a powerful Woodville team, 5 to 1. This brought Old Fort its first district baseball tourney title. The Old Fort nine entered the regionals at Findlay next. After their ups and downs during the season, the boys found their bearings in the county tour- nament and won the third-placetrophy. They surprised many people with their fighting spirit and team co-operation which enabled them to beat teams they had lost to during league play. In the district tournament at Bucyrus the Old Fort lads played a fine game but lost to a powerful team from Lucas. The majority of the team this year was composed of junior boys, so we are looking forward to a good team next year. The junior high basketball team had a comparatively small season this year. The boys won their game with Green Springs by a score of 61 to 34. However, they lost their tourney game with Thompson by the score 24 to 30. Composing the junior high team were Jacque Blue, Don Witter, John Borer, Ivlarion Nlellott, Ronnie Fry, Larry Gutten- berg, Burdell Binder, Charles Kear, Jim Stover, and Jim Darr. The reserve team played on twin-bill schedules along with the varsity except in the tournaments. These lads had really rough sailing, finishing with a record of three wins and fourteen losses. The Junior-Senior Banquet held Saturday evening, April 21, was Hawaiian in theme. Miniature palmtrees and Amer- ican Beauty roses, the senior class flower, decorated the dinner tables. Dancing in the school cafeteria followed the dinner. The cafeteria, decorated in the senior colors of azure blue and American Beauty, re- sembled the ballroom of a ship head- ed for Hawaii.
