It will help us to recall pleasant memories of our high school days and we hope that you, too, will be able to do so. Tb our parents, who have made our high school education possible, to the faculty, for their help and encouragementg to our advertisers and sponsors, who assisted in making this publica- tion a success, we express our appreciation and thanks. Dedication To our advisor andphome room teacher, we ded- icate this 1949 yearbook. Mr. Swihart has ded- icated 34 years of his life to the teaching of boys and girls. His advice and counsel has been invaluable to us. He is more than a teacher of Science and Mathematicsg he is a sincere friend and counselor. In this small way, we express our gratitude for his friendship and help. It is our hope that he may have many more happy years in his chosen profession and that many students may benefit by his assistance in the years to come. in Admizziitmtimzi , I Q ,A S V lx F. The position that the Old Fort School holds is evidence of their good judgment in school affairs. Good teachers and a modern, well-equipped building have been their goals. We are grateful to each member of the Board of Education for the effort put forth for our bene- fit. We trust that we can partially compensate them by becoming useful citizens and by doing our bit to improve the school and community. ERNEST HIESTAND, Superintendent Faculty B- A. 'S swf Fendie 14 Schmitz Lizzy Murnbles Bill Class History It was on the day after Labor Day, 1937, that we, the members of the class of 1949 took our first step on the 'trail'. The forty members of our class that year were taught the fundamentals by Miss Anna Miller. Part of the second grade was located in our home room the first year and they helped us to overcome that 'lost' feeling and become acquainted with the atmosphere of school. A scarlet fever epidemic caused a lot of absen- ces but we managed to keep up on our work pretty well and soon began to feel very proud that we could read s little and add a few problems. We made up the traditional toy or- chestra which was directed hy Misa Miller and accompanied by Mrs. Newman and made several public appearances during the year. Mrs. Zelma Zeis Mullins was our second grade teacher. This wss the year that the new building was being built so we heard a lot of pounding and odd noises comparable to those of this year. Although we advanced s year to the third grade, our home room was in the same room due to the fact that our class was too large for the room now occupied by the second grade. One of the highlights of this year was the day when our teacher, Mrs. Connie Ryman Michael took us on a tour through the new building. We returned to our room thinking of those long, hard yesrs ahead until we would become s part of the new building. It really wasn't as long as we had expected. We started something new when we entered the fourth grade. This was a harmonica hand under the direction of our hole room teacher, Miss Edith Zink. By the end of the year, we thought we were quite accomplished musicians and appeared on several programs in the com- munity. A fourth grade tonette class has been conducted every year since. Our movement to the top story of the school building for the fifth and sixth grades resl- ly made us feel 'grown-up'. At recess, we sometimes got a chance to peek into the study hall and see how the high school acted-- lFrom our seventh grade actions, I don't be- lieve this was such a good influence.J Hav- ing two teachers also made us feel big and gave us a little taste of high school life. Under the direction of Mrs. Delthia Doran Murphy and Miss Marion Robinson, our 'gray matter' was increased and we soon found our- selves hunting for the seventh grade home l'D0m n Yes, we hunted, and most of our teachers spent the next year hunting for the cause of our actions. Of course, we wanted to act like the high school and show them that we could make spit-balls and throw erasers, to0. The class became a little settled, however, on the last day of school when about seven members discovered that they would have to return to the seventh grade the next year. Our home room teacher this year was Miss Janet Steer. We did win the annual magasine drive, however, and were given a very nice party by the teachers. I can imagine how they must have felt, giving a party for that 'terrible seventh grade'. Under the guidance of our home room teacher Miss Robinson, we continued to improve our reputation through the eighth grade and real- ly made an outstanding record for the school in the annual State Scholarship Test. Mem- bers of our class placed first, second, fifth, and ninth in the county and forty-five percent of our class ranked in the upper twenty-five percent of Seneca County. Mr. Hiestand also thought this was a pretty good record and happily graduated us into high school on the last day of school. We were pretty well grown up now and showed this by climaxing the year with s picnic and weiner roast behind the school house. We were duly sworn into high school on the night of Freshmen Initiation and began to participate in all of the high school ac- tivities. Several members of our class made honorable records in music, speech, and scholarship this first year. As our contri- bution to the annual Play Festival we pre- sented 'Ten Percent Tommy'. Our Sophomore year was also a busy one. We staged 'Who Murdered Who' in this year's Play Fest. It was this year that people began to notice us and realize that we had some future basketball stars, musicians and speech stu- dents in our class. Miss Betty Kemper was our class advisor the first two years in high school. There were three big events during our Junior year. The first was the selection of our class rings. With the help of our advis- ors, Mrs. Helen Newman and r. Mervin Ransom, we picked what we of course thought were the prettiest rings any class had ever had. The next big event was the Junior Play. Mr. Hiestand directed our play 'If This Be Bliss' which turned out to be quite a success. It was a three-act comedy. Music between acts was furnished by the High School Orchestra under the direction of Miss Slotterbeck. The large sum of money which we made enabled us to put on a nice banquet for the seniors and teachers in the spring. The banquet was fol- lowed by dancing in the cafeteria which we had decorated in a twilight garden setting. We had a lot of fun working on this big event. Now that we are Seniors, we have eighteen members in our cliss, nine boys and nine girls, all of whom are looking forward to graduation. We call ourselves the forty- niners and are wondering how much farther up the 'trail' we will have to travel until we find our gold. We realize that the teachers, with their patience and hard work, have help- ed ua along so far. Now we must travel alone. How far we get will depend upon how well we apply what we have learned the past twelve years. Let's hope all of us soon dis- cover 'gold'. With utmost confidence in his legal ability we do hereby appoint Marion Kroetz sole executor of this estate, and trust that he will deal with this estate diligentry and upon our death see that all of the small favors we have asked be taken care of. ARTICLE I We, the Senior Class, with the faculty utmost in our minds, bequeath to them many days and nights of peaceful rest with freedom from the many nightmares that we have caused them in our four years of high school. I ARTICLE II To the Senior Class of 1950, the Senior Class of '49' wills all the Senior privileges and our untar- nished reputation and hope they do not use them to excess. ARTICLE III Tb the dear Sophomores, the Seniors will all their collections of gum wrappers, waste paper, flove notesj and hope that they will know how to put them to the best of use in future years. ARTICLE IV Tb the Freshmen, the Seniors give their unsurpass- ed knowledge of the three R's and hope that we did not treat them too hard at Freshmen Initiation. ARTICLE V ' We, the Senior class of 1949, hereby make these individual requests and upon our death we hope that they will be carried out by our executor. John Lavo wills his beauty and size thirteen basketball shoes along with his-place on varsity to Marion Kroetz and hopes that he fills them well. Beverly Hoffman who has such great cheerleading ability wills this to Lucille Depinet and Beverly hopes that she will take advantage of this next year. Mary Jane Wilkinson who has such lovely blond hair thinks that she ought to will this to Virgil Kisabeth who could use some long hair when winter comes with his short butch. Donald Weller wills his much used cigarette light- er along with an extra box of flints and a can of lighter fluid to Arthur Ohler on condition he uses it for many years to come. Dema Peterson wills her great ability of being able to stare everybody down and looking cross eyed at the teachers to a great beginner Charles Humes. The Seniors hope that Chuck can defend this wonder- ful title. Tom Darr not to be out done by John Lavo wills his sweet smelling sweat socks and locker to Tom Shaffer along with his guard position on the varsity basket- ball team. Betty Laux who has such a pert little nose thinks that more people should enjoy it, so she has con- sented to give this to Herman Guttenberg. The Seniors think Herman would look awful nice with a short nose. Robert Borough who so dearly loves to chew gum has consented to give this ability to Corrine Woessner on the condition that she doesn't get caught in one of Mrs. Newman's classes chewing it. Anne Hiestand who loves music so dearly and plays her flute so beautifully has consented to will her flute to another great music lover Ray Berlekamp. Anne hopes that Ray will always treasure this gift dearly. Bernard Schmitz wills his ability of being able to give a diamond to Mildred Heilman whose ability to receive a diamond seems better than any other Junior. James Smith does not like Plymouths so he has de- cided to give his Super Delux Limousine to Tom Hade on the condition Tbm doesn't run the wheels off of it. Tbm should be very happy to receive such a wonderful gift. Betty Donaldson who seems to have so much super- human strength that door handles just naturally break off when she takes hold of them, wills this strength to Alvin Kiesel and may it make him a stronger man in the future. Kenneth Hill wills his great headache of drawing up the ads for the annual and his large store of sleeping pills to another great artist Ralph Joseph. Kenneth hopes that Ralph doesn't take too many sleeping pills and get sick. Helen Shade who always seems well supplied with boy friends, will give one to any girl in the Junior Class who promises to take the best of care of him in future years. Bill Zimmerman who always seems able to squeeze out of trouble no matter what the offense may be, wills this ability to Jack DeMoss who always man- ages to squeeze into trouble but never out. The Seniors hope that Jack uses this to his best ad- vantage. Although Phyllis Miller thinks a lot of her wavy hair she has considered to give this to Don Edwards whose hair is plenty long but very straight. Jack Stiger who receives much pleasure from cracking his knuckles and also his foot, thought maybe Gladys Colvin would like to sit next year in study hall and do this so he has decided to give this ability to her. Helen Wise wills her great musical ability and place in the band to Donald Bishop. Helen hopes that Don will take her place in the band next year. First, Don, you will have to learn how to play an instrument. We, the Senior Class of Forty-Nine, hereby sign this our last will and testament. In spite of these gigantic projects, they gave a good representation in extra-curricular activities. Their participation in music, dramatics, and sports showed they were willing to attempt anything. The class officers were: President - Don Edwards, Vice-President - Jack DeMoss, Secretary-Treasurer - Marion Kroetz, News Reporter - Margaret Kemp. BOYS ' CHORUS All of the boys in high school who were interested in music enjoyed themselves for two periods a week singing in the boys' chorus. Although this group did not appear as often as the girls' chorus, they worked diligently and six boys were chosen to sing with the boys' chorus in the County Festival. GIRLS' CHORUS The members of the girls' chorus, wearing the new choral robes, made several public appearances throughout the year and took part in one audition. They sang at the Christmas program and at Commencement. In the District Choral Auditions, the girls' chorus received a II, or excellent rating. Six members of this group were selected to sing with the County Chorus in the annual Music Festival. MIXED CHORUS Many outstanding opportunities were available for thirteen members of the mixed chorus this year. These people, Betty Donaldson, Mary Jane Wilkinson, Anne Hiestand, Helen Wise, Beverly Hoffman, Mary Anglemeyer, Robert Borough, Tom Darr, John Lavo, Jack Stiger, Don Edwards, Lynn Wonder, Don Wise, and Gene Zimnerman were chosen to sing with the Seneca County Mixed Chorus last sunmer. They practiced hard so they could offer a pleasing pro- gram at the Ohio State Fair and at the Northwestern Ohio Teachers' Meeting in Toledo. Our school was represented by twelve students who sang in the mixed chorus in the County Festi- val. The mixed chorus also sang at Baccalaureate. 29 bee gp he ' QI c f L E E 2 R' Dirk .va if iw 30 Ck, 1-,G QQ' Q -own- X. cb-K. Q 690,00 This year Mrs. Newman has been in charge of the Girls' Physical Education class, which consists of the girls of the upper four grades. This class meets on Monday and Wednesday. We've done a variety of different things, but the game we liked most was volleyball. We en- joyed learning a few steps in square dancing, and also a little exer- cising frequently. There has been a rule made by the Ohio High School Athletic Asso- ciation this year to eliminate the girls' volleyball tournament. To take its place the superintendents of Seneca County have decided to hold a Girls' Volleyball Festival. Each school will be permitted to enter an A team and a B team. The eight members of each of these teams will meet a county rival in a thirty minute gane. Omtory Those who entered the Prince of Peace contest were: Margaret Kemp, Jean Bonnell, Anne Hiestand, Joyce Heilman, Beatrice Heilman, Otto Lynch, John Lavo and Robert Borough. An elimination contest left Anne Hiestand and Otto Lynch to compete in the county contest. Anne claimed the honor of first in her contest and Otto was chosen as alternate in his. Anne then went to the district to come out on top once again. She then went to Columbus to compete in the state contest. This time com- petition proved to be too strong.
