Under it all, we were just a little sensitive about being low men on the totem pole and did our utmost, in the presence of upper-class- men, to let them know we were practically their equals and expected some recognition that was not condescending. We were constantly on the alert for upper-classmen attitudes, and even attempted to copy them in order to become naturalized to high school life. During said freshman year and the two years that followed, there occurred at approximately the end of the first semester a phenomenal change in each succeeding senior class. At noon, every senior class invariably selected the same table, and formed a hilarious, intimate cluster that one didn't break into without feeling like an intruder or definitely out of place. At all school activities the participating seniors would be in a group set a little apart as though they had things in common that had to be shared then or never. Commencement exercises were commonly accompanied by sad, parting tears, and many vows to write soon, and never forget the good old days at school and the friendships made there. This clannish force prevalent in senior classes seemed very strange to us under-classmen, who had one or two close friends, and didn't bother too much with- the rest of the class. Old Father Time has finally caught up with us. The first semester has quickly come and gone: our days as seniors at Old Fort School are numbered, and as graduation looms larger and even larger on our horizons, our busy steps slow a trifle. Suddenly, we feel oppressed with the shortness of time. We wonder what We've been doing all four years to have neglected knowing our classmates better. We now find something fine and good about all of them: we lay aside the petty grudges and quarrels of yes- teryears and never grow tired of being together. The future is nearly forgotten for a time in the overwhelming desire to live the present before it is gone forever. The teachers, too, play a large part in this over-all feeling. They no longer appear to us as policemen or watch-dogs who guard our every move. They, too, are friends, so willing to help us in our every need. Their guiding influ- ence in our lives cannot be overestimated: we're indeed grateful for their untiring efforts in our behalf. So now the issue is before us. We've had such a marvelous year, and have made the most of it, too . . . enjoyed each other's comradeship and that of the faculty. But the time has come when we must say farewell to all, and each go on to prepare his own destiny. We all have much before us, and such wonderful memories behind. Good-bye is too harsh and such a defi- nite end to it all, so we say instead: Farewell, 'til we meet again. There was always lots of candy and a good t1me 1n store The th1rd grade was much as the f'1rst two That year the Cromers school 1o1ned ours QIV mg us some new puprls and a new teacher MISS Zelma Zels Thls was theyearthat the same th1rd grade room was part1t1oned off and parts of the second and fourth grades were rn w1th us M1ss Robxnson and MISS ZGIS both had the respons1b1l1t1es of teachmg us to use our gray matter In the wlnter t1me we could hardly wa1t unt1l the snow fell so we could bulld forts and have snowball frghts It always seemed as 1f recess per1ods were never long enough or there weren t enough of them In the sprmg the mmds of the boys part1cularly turned to baseball They al ways seemed to have a good t1me play1ng 1t though there were numerous quarrels over who should be on whose srde and who would get 'I6 to be umpxre Most of the teachers found them selves IH the m1ddle of everythmg stra1ghten 1ng 1t out for the fellows It seems as though 1t turned out some pretty good players accordlng to the results of the h1gh school team M1ss Edlth Zmk was our capable teacher ln the fourth grade Thrs was the year the new part was added to the bu1ld1ng It was hard to study wlth so much excrtement and so marw strange HOISGS There were tractors and electrlc hammers and what not runnmg outslde our w1n dow cont1nually One day Mr Rost took us for a tour of the new burldmg It was st1ll rn the rough stages of course but to come back 1n the frfth grade and look at the f1n1shed product was a Wonderful srght lf you remember the old butldmg as I do you certalnly appreclate more fully the fme IGCIIIIIQS we have now We thought 1t was wonderful 1n the f1fth grade to have a room on the th1rd floor We were al most 1n h1gh school we thought Thls year M1ss Delthra Doran and MISS Roblnson shared the sublects between the frfth and srxth grades whlch gave us a taste of h1gh school hfe We thought we were pretty much on top of the world 1n both the frfth and srxth grades We had the same teachers 1n the slxth grade and our Then before we knew 1t we were IH Iunlo Hrgh My what a htel Eugene Russell was our home room teacher rn the seventh grade and Mrs Helen Newman 1n the e1ghth grade We thought It was wonderful to go around llke the h1gh school krds d1d We began to adopt the1r ways by trymg to look and dress as they drd The glrls donned Sloppy Ioe s and the boys began to turn thelr shlrt collars down and comb the1r ha1r We had a few partles studled qurte a b1t and were devout sport fans In the e1ghth grade we were grven the usual e1ghth grade tests whrch doom all classes at that t1me I-Iow ever our m1nds were becommg qulte masterful and we took qu1te a few honors 1n that test We Just dldnt th1nk we would become much smart er but what a lot we had to learn' lhen lo and behold we were freshmen We were happy go lucky but looked down upon by our upperclassmen Extra currrcular GCIIVIIISS took our eye Now we could 1o1n 1n sports speech and mus1c affa1rs Wed show those upperclassmen that we werent as bad as they thought Of course we spent some t1me on stud1es too but we drdnt hke those as well Algebra perplexed us all but we caught on sooner or later Cmostly later? This was the year we wrote thousand word themes on canning which was sponsored by the Ohio Cahners in the War Manpower Commission. Une of our members took first prize another the third and above all we did it in competition with the seniors We thought writing them was an awful task but we were happy to hear the results Miss Ruth Slotterbeck was class advisor thi year lt was a most profitable year in our high school career luniors having arrlved at the age of sixteen we were becoming more responsible and our minds turned to many things The first big event was our play Dont Take My Penny Remember what fun we had producing that play? We began to share responsibilities and liked it It was this year we really learned what the word busy meant After the play We began to work on the banquet Remember how proud we were of it? We had our first formals and new suits and had a better time than the seniors showing them off How the girls wor ried over whether they would be asked or not Our banquet was detailed along the Dutch theme We had appropriately decorated tables in gold and blue colors The cafeteria Where we danced after dinner was also decorated Here we found again how much fun it was to work together We did it under the very able guidance of Mrs. Newman, our class advisor. We also had a party, consisting of a Wiener roast and a show, which was a lot of fun. Now, we are seniors! Our main purpose is to graduate. We are working hard to make our yearbook, The Trail, a success. Those par ticipating in the contest at the Old Fort' Evangelical United Brethren Church November 17 were: Mary Ann Rosenberqer, Almeda Kemp, Walter Moorehart, and Anne Hiestand. Almeda Kemp placed first and Anne Hiesiand, alternate. Those competing in the school auditorium November 18 were: Margaret Kemp, Doris Sherritf, and Homer Zimmerman. Homer Zimmerman received first place and Doris Sheriff, alternate. Bronze medals were awarded to the first place winners. The play chosen by Old Fort was High Window, a melodrama by Verne Powers. The following cast of seniors was chosen and directed by Miss Stiger. The cast received a one rating in their preliminary triangle and a two rating in the final County Triangle. They were eligible to enter state competition on the l8th and 19th of April in Columbus. Because the in- surance company was not convinced that Mr. Winthrop died an accidental death, it delayed payment of the one hundred thousand dollars tor which he was insured. Mrs. Winthrop made Walter believe he killed his uncle and she blackmailed Iudith Ware by threatening to tell reporters of a romance between her husband and Iudith. ludge Craig showed an infinite amount of patience with Emily and her shrewd, crooked schemes. No county meet is held and the boys go directly to the district held at Ottawa Park in Toledo. The first twelve completing the course at Toledo gain the privilege of running in the state rneet. The boys showed up well in the several trial meets that were held. Hopes were high as the day neared for the district rneet. However, none of the boys were able to gain a chance in the state meet. The music department has been very active this year in providing good music for our school programs and the other activities. Miss Slotterbeck has been a very competent conductor for all our music organizations. She likes music very much: and makes learning music a joy to all her pupils. The county solo clinic and the Music Festival are the two main events in which the students participate. The solo clinic has vocal and instrumental contestants. They can compete in both the county and district clinics. The County clinic was held at Melmore on March 225 and the district clinic at Fremont Ross High School on March 29. Those receiving superior ratings at the district are entitled to go to the state contest to be held sometime in May. Many students entered his event and made an excellent showing. The County Music Festival was held at the Hopewell-Loudon School on March 28. A plea tor new members was the first measure. Alter a good response to this, the boys began to work. They had to learn to do part songs, and to harmonize together. They have done very well, and it is good to hear their lusty voices. Seven boys represented this group in the Festival. Their numbers for this program were: The Sea by Charles Huerter, and Tell Me Not of a Lovely Lass by Cecil Forsyth. MIXED CHORUS This group has been participating in many things throughout the year. There were six representatives in the County Chorus, which sang before the Northwestern Ohio Teachers' Convention in Toledo last October. lt was both educational and inspirational to sing with this group of eighty voices. Thirteen students sang in the Festival Mixed Chorus. The numbers were: The Peasant and His Oxen by Aschenbrunner, and Almighty God, Who l-last Given Us Grace by E. B. Whittredge. ORCHESTRA These musicians had a regular spotlight at all the plays. Their lilting strains gave the proper mood for all drama or comedy. The orchestra also participated in the County Orchestra Festival. Nine of this group's twenty members were chosen to represent Old Fort in this program. They were: Robert Blaney, Nora Palmer, Betty May, lanita Riedel, Betty Heil- man, Winifred Watson, Helen Wise, and Lois Berlekamp. Last spring the orchestra received an excellent rating in the district clinic at Fremont. This was very good, considering our small number. BAND Never a basketball game goes by, but what we hear the rousing march music of our band. It has a lot of volume for its small membership of eighteen. The band gives to every ball game that added pep, which makes everyone more enthusiastic to see what goes on. Their flashy brown and gold uniforms make it pleasant for us to look at them as well as listen to them. The band is one organization that our school could not get along Without, so the students must work hard to keep up the good work.
