We sincerely wish that your future may be a continuation of the happiness experienced while learning the funda- mentals of life at Old Fort H h School. - -r . y. Old Fort has its share of beauty and brains as exemplified by those participating in the Free Enterprise parade. In the Beginning . . SEPTEMBER The eagerly awaited and sometimes dreaded opening days begin with noisy chaos in the halls. New friends, new faces, new teachers, and new classes add to the disorder. Work and fun begin, and everyone knows the year is in full swing. Adding to honors earned by OFHS students, the land judging team of the vocational agriculture department won the district contest of the Mountain View Federation. The fun of football begins with decorating goal posts for the weekly games. The fun reaches a hilarious climax in the antics of the Powder Puff participants. OCTOBER features Fall, Fun, and Football 9 IfiSiSiii NOVEMBER . . . preparation for SAT and PSAT A working knowledge of history aided those who participated in the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test. Here, studious juniors seek a better under- standing of the political and cultural foundation of the nation. and College Day Seniors who realize the necessity of a college edu- cation receive an opportun- ity to ask puzzling questions of representatives from numerous colleges on Col- lege Day at Pleasant Gar- dens. The guidance co- ordinator for McDowell County Schools arranged this service to aid students in choosing a college and career to suit their needs. 10 DECEMBER . . . concentration on MACBETH in anticipation of research papers . . . but tempered by thoughts of Christmas holidays Winter, Work, and Old Man Winter brings unexpected vacations to joyful students who seem oblivious to the fact that lost time must be made up on spring days. 12 Worry . . . JANUARY Exams, FEBRUARY Recovery Study and diligence are rewarded, as Peggy Lackey can testify. She was chosen to receive the D.A.R. Good Citizen award, based on scholarship, leadership, loyalty, and patriotism. 13 Civics students lay problems before a panel of parents for frank and animated discussion. They conclude that good citizenship begins in the home. MARCH Brings the Promise of Spring . . . 14 In its first year of organization, the school band has made giant strides toward becoming a first-class, perform- ing musical group. Mr. Joseph DeNardo, director, deserves commendation for the success of these young musicians. To the P.T.A. goes credit for the very necessary financial backing. . . . with APRIL showers . . . Band concerts . . . and spring fever. 15 The beginning of the End MAY Junior-Senior Banquet, graduation practice, that strange feeling of joy and nostalgia, and the excitement of those last days brought the year to a close. Each event was greeted by Seniors ' cries that it is the last. Under- classmen realized that there would be other high school years, but each felt the senti- mental feeling that there would never be another year such as this. Looking back brought memories of work, pleasure, friend- ship, and the realization that the year has passed with the speed of wonderful times, leaving lasting memories. 16 ADMINISTRATION Administration The operational success of Old Fort School has been largely due to the quiet, efficient management of the principal, P.W. Greer, In addition to his regular multitudinous duties, this year Mr, Greer is directing the faculty in compiling in- formation and courses of study for re-accreditation by the State Department of Public Instruction, Once this is achieved, work will continue for accreditation by the Southern Associ- ation of Colleges and Secondary Schools, Improvement of the quality of education on the local level is attributed to Mr, Greer ' s unceasing efforts on behalf of the students and com- munity. A man of grave responsibilities, Mr, James E, Johnson serves McDowell County as superintendent of public schools, Mr, Johnson supervises county-wide curriculum and physical facilities, and handles all administrative problems of the seven- school system. Serving the school as secretary, Mrs, Margie Thomason is an asset to school management. The order and accuracy with which she keeps school records and carries on school correspondence has improved work- ing conditions for the faculty and Mr. Greer, Mrs, Leola Wright, supervisor, is charted with the respon- sibilities of the free exchange of ideas between teachers in the county. Mrs. Wright also observes county-wide methods of instruction and offers her advice and help. 18 Mr. Donald Anderson Agriculture N.C. State, B.S. The festive mood was equaled only by the festive occasion. A smiling queen reigned over the Homecoming activities. Crowned at half-time she was again honored at the dance immediately following the game. Homecoming Chosen by an admiring team as the Homecoming Court were Virginia Burnette, senior; Judy Allison, junior; Sharon Hendley, queen; Libby Piercy, sophomore; and Jo Lytle, freshman. For the first time at Old Fort the various clubs were represented in the Homecoming Court. They were Judy Crawford, Student Council; Linda Wilson, F.F.A.; Judy Jenkins, F.T.A.; and Linda Lytle, F.H.A. Court attendants were still a center of attraction at the dance. It was a big night for the girls as well as for the team and Old Fort ' s fans. 23 An elderly couple and a representative of an age gone by were prize winners in the annual costume judging. Brandishing two humorous stage props, Charlie Howery steps up to the micro- phone to weave a tale with riotous effects. Halloween Carnival The Halloween Carnival, sponsored annually by the PTA, began with a dinner in the school caf- eteria. The gym opened with booths for younger visitors. Later a well-presented stage show featuring local talent drew much approval from the packed house. The Sabres, a local band, entertain both students and guests as they await the coming festivities. Pearl Grant, as Minnie Pearl of the Grand Ole Opry, captivates the audience with her folksy humor. Flaxen curls and awe-inspiring figure, Jethrine accompanys her Adonis-like husband, Homer”, in a duet, Let Me Go, Blubber . Serving as directors and members of the chorus, Lenore Padgham and Elenore White perform as the Gold Dust Twins . The display of talent resulted in an evening of rewarding entertainment and down-to-earth fun. The enthusiastic applause drawn from the audience compensated the cast for all the hours spent in diligent rehearsal. A coveted position of honor for the elementary grades is the spot of Prince and Princess of the Carnival. This year the proud bearers of the title are Beverly Early and Mike Ramsey. FOOTBALL Going through the pre- game rituals. Old F ort play- ers loosen their muscles with strenuous exercises. A sprightly Redskin has the ball carrier in his hands as teammates close in from the back. It ' s teamwork like this that wins games. 38 Redskins plagued by injuries The outlook for the season was bright when Old Fort took the field against Bakersville. As the first game proceeded, the Redskins scored twice for an 14-0 victory. After this glory, the road was downhill. Many of the key players were eliminated due to injuries. Many first string players were disabled, leaving inexperienced sophomores to call the plays for Old Fort. Yet, the Redskins put up a good fight and demanded the admiration of fans and coaches. The second victory for the Redskins came in the last game of the season, the Homecoming game against Spruce Pine. Returning next year the boys who received experience and practice expect to carry their team to the top rung of the ladder. Coaches, students, and fans anticipate a big year for Old Fort on the gridiron. Terry Hendley, bright, young Junior, honored his team with many feats of strength and cunning. Most of all, how- ever, he won the glory of being named All-Conference guard. Every team needs leaders, including football teams. Old Fort ' s young team follows, FIRST ROW: co-captains Jerry Piercy, Mark Hensley, Charles Stire- walt, Jerry M c F al 1 s . SECOND ROW; Coach Ken Griffin, Jim Melton, Jimmy McGinnis, Coach James Washburn. 1 39 Girls’ Basketball The Old Fort Maidens opened the 1964 season as defending McDowell County Champions. Get- ting off to a slow start, the girls showed improve- ment as the season progressed, ending with a 10-9 record. They took third place in the Skyline Con- ference, after holding the number one spot for four consecutive years. Although the Maidens did not produce a cham- pionship season, each game was an unforgettable experience. Each victory a reward, each defeat a heartbreak, each teammate a link in a chain which bound the girls to their team and school. Leading the Maidens through victory and de- feat, co-captains Gloria Turner and Peggy Lackey discuss strategy with Coach Ken Griffin. Backing the team is a creditable reputation and a desire to live up to the expectation of ardent supporters. Willing to practice long, hard hours and to give devoted service to their coach, team, and school are the Old Fort Maidens, SITTING; Judy Davis, Sherry Hendley, Bonnie Harris, manager, Judy Crawford, Theresa Early. STAND- ING: Rita Silver, Gloria Turner, Shirley Hartwell, Margaret Creasman, Peggy Lackey, Sheila Hipps, Catherine Robinson, Libby Piercy, Mickie Ann Johnson, Shirley Jenkins, Judy Harris, and Linda Lytle. 1 1 [ mMM ■|| ; |l [i I ■ 40 striving to gain the ball for Old Fort, Verna McEntire jumps with an agile opponent and tips the ball toward a waiting team- mate. Poised at the free throw line Sherry Hendley takes a deep breath before tossing the ball for a possible score. Maidens in Action Driving under the basket Libby Piercy avoids a block by a tip-toeing opponent and the score goes up an- other notch. Diligent practice payed off for this Old Fort player as she moves with rhythmic assurance and adds two points for the maidens. Struggling for possession of the ball opponents push, tug, and all but come to blows as the ball bounces from the rim back to the playing floor. Crowds watch the progress of the ball toward the basket as Libby Piercy towers far above an opposing- guard. Determined not to lose possession of the ball, rov- er Verna McEntire weaves away from an equally de- termined guard in an at- tempt to toss the ball to a free teammate. Boys’ jBosketboll Old Fort sportsmanship breeds champions. Two nights a week, every week, from December to March, Old Fort students gather somewhere and join in the chorus, We ' re from Old Fort, couldn ' t be prouder. If you can ' t hear us, we ' ll yell a little louder. Hearing this call to arms, the Redskins rush -onto the basketball court with the battle cry, We ' ll win tonight! Maybe not all games are won, but the fighting spirit is there. This spirit carries the team through triumps and downfalls, onward to the tourn- ment. Then the tournament brings championships and a new trophy for the collection. With a background of trophies from past glories, the top strategists leading Old Fort in the footsteps of former champions are Coach Ken Griffin and Captain Jerry McFalls. Through years of training, Old Fort turns out spirited and experienced teams to represent the school on basket- ball courts throughout the county and elsewhere. This year the ambassadors are, left to right: Johnny Oates, Johnny Walker, Billy Craig, Billy Lytle, Wayne McCauley, Jimmy Willis, Mickey Arney, Chuck Melton, Ralph Willis, Danny Willis, David Rhinehardt, Jerry McFalls, Billy Snyder, and manager, Roger Souther. .. ■■■■■ All eyes are on the ball as Mickey Arney pauses that fraction of a second before making a toss through the net for another two points. Poised to lunge for the rebound, play- ers rally at one end of the court as suspence draws spectators to the edge of their seats. Packed to standing-room-only capacity, the gym shakes with cheers as rival teams. Old Fort and Pleasant Gardens, race for the winning score in the last few minutes of play- ing time. l Old Fort in Action Jimmy Willis and opponent leap, arms outstretched, toward the goal to aid their team ' s cause. An Old Fort shot is knocked away from the goal by a teammate in a moment of su- spense. Shooting one of his accurate jump shots from almost mid- court, Danny Willis foils an opponent who tries to block his shot. Track has been an up-and-coming sport at Old Fort in recent years. Under the experienced eye of Coach Jim Washburn the track boys have practiced ardently and won many honors for the school. Representing Old Fort High at the track meets are, SECOND ROW: Roger Johnson, Steve Wilson, Tony Baker, Jerry Moore, Ray Allison, Billy Morrow; FRONT ROW: Rhonda Lewis, Larry Camp, Johnny Allison, Terry Hendley, and Richard Johnson. First baseman Jimmy Willis tags out a dust- choked opponent as he slides across first base. Waiting for a turn at bat 0 1 d Fort players watch intently as a team- mate steps into the bat- ter ' s box. Baseball A good defensive team is built around a good pitcher. Jerry McFalls displays his skill on the mound. Alert and waiting for a fast ball or curve, Larry Sutton grips the bat as the fans look on. The many turns, dips, and jumps that accompany cheers require much practice to aevelop the exact timing of expert precisionists. The cheer- leaders practice on the front lawn of the school in heat, cold, or dampness. “WeVe got the coach, weVe got the team We’ve got the pep, weVe got the steam” . . . Braving the cold of football season and the tension of the basketball courts to lead loyal fans in boisterous cheers are Pat Grindstaff, Kaye Arney, Barbara Plemmons, Judy Jenkins, Frances Lytle, chief, Jo Lytle, Linda Wilson, Sharon Hendley, and Sharon Berry. Following the guidance of their J.V. coach are FIRST ROW; Dean Thomason, Ronnie Evans, Eddie Rhom, Donald Lackey, Alvin Turner, Mike Elliott, Roger J oh n s o n , Mike Gibbs; SECOND ROW: Ronnie Richardson, Robert Hartwell, Charles Stockton, Larry Walker, Wayne McCauley, Tony Silvers, David Rhinehardt, Fred Burgin, Ray Allison, Troy Kelly, Mike Hensley, and Coach James Washburn. J.V. s realize the rigors of basketball Holding the ballon his fingertips, an Old Fort aspiring star leaps to score a field goal. Junior Varsity Snatching a rebound from the eager hands of an opponent, an agile J.V. forward starts for a better shooting position at center court.
