In the following week Curley Elliott threw a 30- yard pass for the only score as Old Fort went down be- fore the powerful NCSD boys. The final margin was 41-6. J. W. Turner snagged a long pass to minimize a large deficit in the game against Cranberry. The final score was 48-6, in favor of Cranberry. Bad luck and fumbles plagued the Redskins as they went down before Drexel 26-O. Blazing off the newly-developed single wing offense, Crazy-legs Moore went 45 yards to prevent another whitewash as East Yancey won 19-6. The Conference Champions, Glen Alpine, rolled over a resisting Redskin line to win 39-O. 1 Injuries increased the odds as Old Fort went down before Salem, 40-O. The Homecoming game with Crossnore was a spirited contest but ended in a scoreless tie. James Melton caught a 20-yard pass to score against Spruce Pine, but the final score was 18-7, favor of Spruce Pine. Rushing yardage failed to tally for Old Fort as they lost the final game 13-O to Oak Hill. The class invited people in the community to visit and discuss with them these various subjects. One of the more interesting discussions occurred when a panel composed of students and parents studied the role of the home in the development of good citizens. John McEntire, a member of the class, presided. CHAMPION SPELLER SANDRA KNUPP spells another yard-long word to demonstrate the ability that won her first place ina county-wide contest. She began the path to this honor by winning her division in the school competition. A month of intense study followed this, and paid off on March 31, when she defeated a Glenwood finalist for first place. For this achievement, Sandra was presented with a trophy, which may be seen in a case at the entrance to the building. ROBERT BYRD retired the high school spelling trophy for Old Fort by winning the 1962 contest. His victory com- pleted the series of three consecutive wins begun by Penny Carver in 1960 and 1961. 7 r'-N1 ., s . .-nn-sq -r Qs'-f 2? .
