JAMES WALKER RELLON WALKER We are the junior Class of Old Fort High School. We began our junioryear with great antieipations. We recognized the faet that our ranlcing was next to the Seniors. As juniors We have had a very eventful year. At the beginning of the year, we undertook severalmoney-raising projects for funds for ourjunior-Senior Banquet. One of the most important of these was our magazine sales. This proved very successful. Another was the junior-Teacher ball game . Students enjoyed seeing teachers in this new role and they were surprised to rind some all-conference players among the fa c ulty. Probably the most enjoyable project was the junior Play. The long, hard hours of practice were forgotten with the excitement of opening night. The success of our projects made possible a lovely banquet, that we hope will live in the memory of the Seniors as it will in ours. Several of our classmates were honored for their academic accomplishments by being chosen as Marshals. Exams, U, S, history, detention hall, ball games-victories and losses, and term papers are all memories of our junior year. This year was indeed all we had anticipated. Now we are on the threshold of becoming Seniors-a goal for which we have diligently strived. 32 li 1 I +1 , 1 4 nv w 1 ' .. 5 I , ,. wgl V .,... fl 1 Q 5 9, l :F if L 4 F f I 1 4 I L I Q 1. 4 1 I w Wd? iii Sopgomores Douglas Allison , ' , , Q1 f Martin Allison ,Q , ao v. We know now that we be long and this brings a very satisfactory feeling of security. This year has already had its rewards. Those who have been wise in their study habits over the years have reaped the fruits of their labor by being inducted into the Beta Club. Then, too, there are many of us who have excelled in other fields. In our athletic program we are proud of those who have done so well. Nor would we forget to mention the boys and girls who go along from day to day doing his or her best to become worthy citizens. Many of our Sophomores have another attainment which deserves our notice-we have our driver's license! That to us is a milestone in life. We hope that we do not underestimate the responsibility that it brings. We also like to recall the fe e li ng of unity that has become ours with both Sophomore sections organized under one president. We expect to maintain this togetherness throughout our high school days. Our Sophomores are proving from day to day that they will become good seniors We are accomplishinc this throi l . 3 rg 1 individual initiative which has already brought recognition to some of the members of our class. ffresflmen enjoy High school August 27, 1959 m arke d the beginning of a new and exciting school year for som e eighty of us teenagers lflavinc - J completed eight years of g ram m ar school in fine style, we were now pronounced full-fledged high school freshmen W h d e a e nte re d a new and somewhat strange world. This y e a r the y claimed their first Skyline Conference Championship by winning five conference games against no losses. The team was manned with seasoned performers and no single player seemed to outshine the other, Eachgame seemed to produce a new star. The small things, unnot i ce d by the fans, that produce this winner were many. The perfection blocking of our gre at line of McCauley, Gibbs, Freeman, Lytle, Walker, Carr and Wilson, o pe ne d up big holes for our backs. The play calling and deft ball handling of Quarterback, Mike Teague, as well as Hensley, Harris, and Padgham always fighting for Burgin, Robertson and Rhinehardt can not be over looked in giving cre dit to a sucessful season. Three of our players received arearecognition of their play. Tom Carr, Harold Hensley and Tommy Lytle were sele cted on the conference te am. Tom Carr was also selected on the Times all W.N.C, team. ac 'in' rl. f l ls an -Fl , , .W .q., 1 . r- ,fp wav ,.n.. fb it : - gifs' ' 2 ,p '9-Maile.-1 ' ,. .- ww...-l, ,.., -rf 7:9- 41 WQJIA 1 ,ia i 1 EDGAR POE, TOMMY LYTLE Center JERRY MOORE, TOM CARR Tackle JOHN BURGIN, STEVE MCCAULEY End FRED HARRIS, GEORGE FREEMAN Guard 66 REVILL MALLORY, EDDIE WILSON End DAVID REYNOLDS, JAMES WALKER Guard -arf -f -f 1' ' Lal 1 EDWIN HUDGINS, BUTCI-I GIBBS Tackle 'i HAROLD HENSLEY, TOM CARR. Old Fort's girls lost five players by graduation and are rebuilding this year, The 1959-60 Indian maidens are ledby Co-Captains DeLois Harris andKaye Burgin, two of Western North Carolina's finest girl athletes. OldFort's girls have astonished everyone by winning their first six games, including a victory over power- ful Salem, one of North Carolina's be st girl teams annually. This fine start has served notice on other Skyline and McDowell Conference schools that Old Fort ishard to beat. The Old Fort Girls are the young- est team in either conference and could develop a powerful basketball dynasty if they follow up what they are now doing. C o ac-h Griffin states that a tremendous desire to win and a fine co-operative effort has been the key to the success ofthe girls this se ason. rcv . 1 W - ar A . Mrs. l-lornaday has a staff of student librarians from the l-ligh School to help her . They work at the desk and help with the other chores. The se workers include the follow i ng: Alice Harris, Faye Burgin, Ann Hensley, Carolyn Moore, Kathryn Hudgins, Christine Hampton, Iris C lontz, Nancy C athy,l-lazel Coates, and Shirley Davis. The library has a total of 4700 volumes and has an average of 200 volumes in circulation each day. All grades have a library period each week. This period is used to exchange library books and for lessons on the use of the library. For the first time many children are finding the library is more than a place to check out books. It is a source of information, adventure, excitement, and pleasure . llll yi.. Sa PQ- i M1 Xl! x-,ax rrjsm -wr A ! .3-q-v----v , fs A-X X ' 1.
