With frightened, yet eager countenances, we all trouped into our different classrooms. Not knowing what everything was all about, we soon became ac- quainted with this new life under the guidance of our understanding teach- ers, Miss Mary Burgin, Mrs. Nichols, and Miss Calhoun. After learning our basic ABC 's, and how to apply these letters to the things we knew, we traveled on to the second leg of our iourney. There, we were met by Mrs. Glossie Pyatt, and Mrs. Elizabeth Lindley, who acquain- ted us with various other methods of learning. With this great store of knowl- edge, we stepped on up to the third grade. With Mrs. Grace Steppe, Mrs. Lindley, and Mrs. Taylor directing us, we began to study such fascinating things as What makes the World go Round, and various other strange new things. From there, we went on to the Fourth Grade. Under the guidance of Mrs. Margaret Harris, Mrs. Enloe, and Mrs. Wilson, we learned our multipli- cation tables, and began studying more about History and Geography. With Mrs. Simmons, Mrs. Brad- ley, and Miss Roberts to guide us in the fifth grade, Miss Powell, Mrs. Lonon, and Miss Davis in the sixth, and H UG H VESS BARBARA WALKER SAMMIE ALLISON ............ We were herded through the last lap of our grammar school education by Miss Betty Sue McCraw and Charles Estep. Then began that long awaited moment--High School! That ninth year was surely an exciting one. We were separated and put in home rooms. We discovered our total ignorance to school pro- cedures, and we had to learn all over again. Miss Field, Mr. Woodward, Miss Biddix, Mr. Wil- liams, and Mrs. Church assisted us in righting ourselves. Mr. Williams and Miss Biddix were our homeroom teachers . The tenth grade was very exciting too, but for the most part, it was a repetition of our first year in high school. We all had our various sub- iects under Mr. Woodward, Mr. Hornaday, Mrs. Marston, Miss Melba Hicks, Miss Louise Bailey, and Mrs. Church. Mr. Hornaday and Miss Hicks were our homeroom teachers. We began the eleventh grade with Mrs. Painter and Miss Field directing this 'momentous year. There was plenty of feudin' but it was all good-natured. We had lots of fun raising money for the Junior-Senior Banquet, especially at the ball game we played with the teachers, and the Junior Play, Deadly Ernest. - Q , frm p ,. ,.Ln1-.!- K. 44, f ,,i .... . f-f- ' - 'V it Q Vs. -. This year has brought many new experiences for us. Under the supervision of Miss Field, our Senior sponsor, the school store was operated by the Seniors. With the guidance and help that Miss Field has been willing to give us, we feel that we have accomplished a great many things. We sincerely hope that our future life shall be as pleasant and as enriching as the past twelve years have been. tl DAVID ALLISON Ta the valiant heart, naught is im- possible. As far as the football team of Old Fort High School is concerned, the football season began on August l7, l955, with a meeting of all the candidates for the squad. At 2 o'clock, equipment was issued to approximately twenty men and the first football practice ever to be held at Old Fort High ensued, under the capable direction of head coach, James Washburn, line coach, Donald Thomas, and backfield coach, Jim Kisselburg. Practices were held twice daily for two weeks be- fore school started, and with the opening of school, scrimmages were held every day. As the first big game approached, which was on September 9, tension mounted. Excitement ran high through the community and a half hour before game time, there were an estimated five hundred fans on hand. Although Old Fort was unable to generate a scoring drive in the first half, they pushed across two touchdowns in the second half and the clock ran out before the 3rd drive could be completed. With Donald R. Gilkey, Robert Plemmons and Hershel White led the scoring attack with two aerial touchdowns. Despite on excellent showing in their first appearance on the grid- iron, the lndains went down to defeat by the score of I8-T2 The next week the squad iourneyed to Glen Alpine to encounter one of the best Class A teams in the Western part of the state. In spite of some spectacular catches by Robert Plemmons, they bowed to Glen Alpine, 27-6. Donald R. Gilkey got a sprained wrist which was put into a splint for a week or two. The following week, they played Bakersville on Marion's field, but were unable to put to- gether a successful drive, bowing to Bakersville, T2-O. Led by the brilliant offensive work of Eddie Harris, the Old Fort Indians won their first ball game as they tromped Hot Springs 7-O. Kenneth Carver was hospitalized because ofa bad eye, but was able to play again in the latter part of the season. Next they journeyed to Mars Hill where they played their first ball game in the rain and mud. In spite of Joe Litaker, who made spectacular tackles from one side of the field to the other, the Indians lost to Mars Hill, 26-O. -Allll'k They were visited the following week by Ervin. In the first half, the team couldn't put together a successful scoring drive, but Ervin put together 3 or 4. With the fine passing of Donald R. Gilkey, the spectacular catching and running of Eddie Harris, and the tackling of Dan Gibbs, Old Fort scored three touchdowns in the second half. This didn 't turn the tables because Ervin won 39-18. Lloyd Porter got an injured ankle and missed the following game because of it. The squad journeyed to Clyde the following week where they were defeated 53-6. Donald R. Gilkey hitting end Her- shel White for their only score. The next Thursday, the Indians played the Marion Jr. Varsity. Marion got a flying start as they scored I9 points in the first half. The Indians blanked them in the second half as they scored thirteen points. The team's attack was led by the fine ball carrying of Joe Litaker, who was bothered by a couple of cracked ribs that he received in practice. Dan Gibbs received a couple of cracked ribs and Lloyd Porter was hos- pitalized with a locked knee. The squad's last game was with Spruce Pine's Second Team, which they won T2-O.
