L.'l 1966 Troubadour Norfolk, Virginia TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration and Faculty.............34 Classes 64 Organizations........186 Greeks 234 In Memoriam Professor James J. Barron Professor Willard E. Robb Sophomore James D. Schneider Junior Fred Keyes 4 I 5 6 Old Dominion College presents its students with varied outlets for self-expression. Art, music, sports, even a friendly card game all ploy an important part in developing the complete student. In the end, however, we are all here for one reason — the books. The college offers numerous opportunities for participation in athletics. An active intramural ond varsity program give emphasis, direction, and meaning to sports. Here the practical lessons in perseverance, determination, and sportsmanship are most forcefully learned. 8 Change is constant. Our campus reflects this truth in the astonishing idea that pretty coeds commute on motorcycles and that young men feel the need to disploy an expression of personal integrity. Yet tradition keeps alive the familiar sight of cheerleaders urging victory on the playing fields and the preoccupied artist in secluded contentment. I 12 By increasing the limits of experience, individual insight and expression expand. Thus our personal relationships in college functions become in themselves o means of education. How gratifying is that feeling of growth we hove all experienced in the interaction of person to person and mind to soul. MARKET 14 In this community college the image of mobility is always present. From early morning till late evening the campus swarms with the movement of automobiles, motorcycles, and pedestrians. But in this frantic life one must have something to cling to. 15 rr A quick glance around the college and a student realizes how important seasons are to campus activities. In the fall, there is the quick walk back to class, a tour for the new students, the insanity of registration, and the renewing of old friendships. In the fall campus life is filled with new people, books, and classes. 17 As the winter's first snow fell late in January, the wall along Hampton Boulevard was capped, the Old Academic Building took on a new charm, and the empty Foreman Field stands seemed more empty than ever. School was closed, and swimming was out at Rogers Hall while sliding was in on Foreman Field's ramps. t 18 And while the snow fell, many o student had thoughts of spring, summer, and getting away from the books. For a fortunate few, spring will be a trip to Florida to let go. More than a few will hurry through assignments to get out on the ball field. But for most, the warm days will be lazed away with friends on Virginia Beach. Thus the cycle continues, and an ever growing number of youths anticipate Freshman Orientation in the warm fall sun. 21 Trying to capture 7,500 students twelve hours a day over a thirty acre campus would seem gargantuan, but it can be done. Not in any organized manner with divisions and categories, but as the people and their actions happen. Here is another look at Old Dominion College and her people. if SL : r $ ? §s s K .sxsmkws ,v '■ VJ K W ®® F®5fi®KS , gw« w SfcTO UJ v • A A W i i M K K 5 ; S S K Sf® 5 5«fiVi® K A vi K S S S S S S S K ? In the fall of 1930 the doors of the old Larchmont Elementary School swung open to admit the Norfolk Division's first college students. It was then, as it is now, a commuter's school, but little else has remained the same. We grew steadily in the following years — new buildings, increasing student body and faculty, expanding curriculum and campus. 1930 r I r 27 Librory 1942—AdministrotiOfi Building 1962 1966 Our school's growth is dramatically figured in our library. The library in 1930 was nothing more than a small collection of books and pamphlets donated by the teachers. By 1940 we had collected enough books to fill the shelves in a small one-room library. In 1960 we occupied our new library building, and our collection of books has increased to 110,000 volumes. We look back with pride, and the inevitable nostalgia descends as we see the old destroyed so that the new may be created. Yet our future is so bright with hopes that we can only briefly stop to say thank you to all those who have come before us and made us what we are today. K WA W W W A % A A A A A A A A I 30 Dedication Mrs. Ernest Hemingwoy and Professor Seward. Professor Seward and Malcolm Cowley. In 1947 a scholarly young man who was the Chairman of the Department of English at Tift College was brought to the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. Two years later he became the Chairman of the then five man Department of English. When in 1961 the Department had grown to twenty-five members and the College had been examined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, that accrediting agency was able to characterize the Department of English as very strong. Very strong—that is a useful phrase when we talk about Professor Seword. For instance, we can certainly apply that phrase to his scholarship. He has published one novel, two books of criticism, and numerous magazine articles. He has edited plays and books of poetry. His book reviews appear regularly in newspapers. And he is now working on a book of his personal reminiscences of his friend Ernest Hemingwoy. As a school we share the honor of his literary accomplishments. But more importantly, he has brought his personal warmth and knowledge into the classroom to share with his students. The strength of his teaching has been an inspiration to many. In appreciation for his great contribution to Old Dominion College, this book is dedicated to Professor William Ward Seward, Jr. 31 Lewis W. Webb, Jr. President President Webb has been associated with Old Dominion College from its infancy. He joined the faculty os Instructor of Physics In 1932, become the chief administrative officer of the College in 1946, holding the title of Director, then Provost, and in 1962 wos given the first title of President of Old Dominion College. His ossociotion with the College hos been so intimote and vitol, that it is difficult to disassociate one from the other. There is o naturalness, a rightness obout this relationship. Who more appropriate should be the architect of the growth and future of our school thon President Webb, o native son of the orco that has loved and provided for Old Dominion College? 34 As President of the College, Mr. Webb hos oil of the responsibility for its odministrotion. His primary duty is to oversee the operotion ond growth of the College, with the help of his administrative organization. He is the chief administrative officer of the four main divisions of the school: academic, student personnel services, burget, ond personnel administration. The President is our major emissary to the city, state, ond notion for the betterment ond strengthening of Old Dominion College. Furthermore, in order to be owore of the latest developments in higher education, he must olwoys be in contact with other colleges ond universities. The President is truly the nucleus of the school. President Webb ond Mr. Grody H. Whicker, Assistont to the President Mrs. Normo B. Hamilton, Confidential Secretory to the President, with President Webb 35 The Provost is primorily responsible for shoping the ccodemic policy of the College. He shores this responsibility with the Academic Council which is comprised of the Deans of the five Schools. His busy office reflects the vitolity ond dedication of the mon and the demanding nature of his job. The Boord of Visitors, by action of the Generol Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginio, has legal authority for all mojor policy-making decisions of Old Dominion College. It also hos the duty of selecting the President of the College. The Boord, os in the cose of all stotc-supported colleges, is appointed by the Governor. The present Board of Visitors was appointed on July 1, 1962. Dr. John B. Johnson, Jr. Provost Board of Visitors: Front Row: Mr. W. Peyton May, Mrs. Harvey L. But Old Dominion is not only the student; it is also the complex administrative organization whose sole purpose is to serve the student. Dr. G. Beginning with the spring of 1962, Coach Lou Plummer has compiled a 24-0 record in dual meets. In February of this year, ODC placed fifth in vorsity competition at the State Indoor Meet with Coppi winning the high hurdles and Mike Hayes the high jump. This goes along with the Little 8 Championship and second in the Moson-Dixon Conference Meet. The 1966 squad will miss the services of Etheridge who owns the school 100 yard dash record and George Green, 880 and 1 mile record holder. Lou Coppi, considered one of Virginia's premier hurdlers, will be back to co-coptain the Monarchs olong with 2 mile man Bob Williams. The regular seoson opens March 28 against Springfield College. Baseball The 1965 Old Dominion Basemoll Team was just on average Monarch squad. An average year for Old Dominion, however, is always spectacular. Winning 22 and losing just 6, Coach Bud Metheney piloted his bombers to the Mason-Dixon Conference Championship for the third consecutive year. Leading the Monarchs at the plate was Little All-American Fred Kovner with a .429 batting average. Backing him up was outfielders Jim Zadell and Tommy Harrell with a .343 and .329 overage, respectively. On the mound Fred Carlson led with a 1.31 E.R.A. and 4-0 record. Fred Edmonds, the big man on the pitching staff, had a 8-1 season and 2.20 E R A. The year was not without its disappointments. Riding a 26 game winning streak, the Monarchs were stunned by Ithaca College 4-3 when the tying run was tagged out as he overran third base. In the nightcap, Old Dominion came out on the short end of a 3-2 score. The Monarchs picked up the pieces and started on a new winning streak, but had it end abruptly at 4 games as they suffered one of their worst defeats in history, 17-2 at the hands of Bridgewater College. With the regular season concluded. Old Dominion was invited to defend its N.C.A.A. Eastern Regional College Division Championship at Yankee Stadium. In the finals Union College won 3-1 and prevented Metheney's squad from winning an unprecedented three consecutive titles. Graduation has thinned the Monarch's ranks for '66. Gone are Kovner, Zadell, Harrell, Edmonds and relief specialist Bill Yeargen. The infield remains solid, however, with co-captains Mel Renn and Lee McDaniels, Fred Balmer, and Don Strickland returning. Pitching aces Carlson, Denny Riddleburger and Al Baker are also back with Herb Burton, Tony Zontini, and Robert Williams from last year's freshman team. If Coach Metheney can replace his outfield, this should be another average season. 307 Fred Kovner tokcs botting proctice. One of the rore times Kovner foils to get on bose.
