Academic honors are given at 0HS Finalists in the intramural English contest pause on stage: standard oration Larry Kay, poetry Elaine Carson, humorous reading Candee MeGown and Mike Crooch. original oration Gary Long, standard oration Charles Volturo, poetry Hermionne Goldstein, dramatic readings Mary Pitchford and Diana Sue Dorer, original oration Larry Kelley. Keeping up on current events are National Merit Scholarship semifinalists Betty Gates, Don Ellis, and Peggy Grolemund. Academic honors are offered at OHS, giving out- standing students recognition in many fields. Awards Night, an annual affair in May, is the of- ficial presentation time for most awards. At that time, winners of the intramural English contests, best students in different subjects, Girls' State and Boys' State members, winners of the Busi- ness Education Contest, most outstanding senior boy and girl, and scholarship winners are re- cognized. -lngm 1 ' -23-

display skill at concerts and contest Senior high marching band had a new sparkle plastic shakos on their hats this fall. They pro- duced one of the finest precision drills the band ever had. The band Won first division in contest marching again this year at McAlester and second place in the street parade. They played at foot- ball games, had a pep band for pep assemblies and presented a concert at Christmas. Another con- cert was given in the spring. Last spring a second semester sixth grade band was organized which met once a week until May. This band was of great value in getting seventh grade students started. Senior High Band is presenting a short concert at the Council House in the heart of downtown Okmulgee. IA'2llllllK the French Horn quartet is James Wood. Other members are Jon Harshaw, Mike Coleman, and Larry Johnson. Playing away are members ot' the clarient quartet Gary Long, Dean Barnes, Ann Hardwick, and Jerry Thorman it l t it W 1 3. ' 5 -i... -V if s is if ' :mill to students for outstanding work Placing sixth and nlnth in the state essay contest on Jobs for the Handicapped- -Passports to Dignity were Peggy Grolemund and Anne Thompson. Winning essays in the soil conservation contest were written by Lynn Lapp and Glenda Pitc. David Towry and Peggy Grolemund compare note: on their winning essays in the intramural essay contest, entitled Gifts, Mlss Mary Lou Finley admires the Parents Maffazinc Achievement award presented to the KeyNotes, who are directed by Miss Finley. Spelling finalists Dana Collier, Richard Maledon. Paul Gill, Doug Collier. all seventh grafters, are due con- gratulations. OHS champion, Richard. placed eighth among 60,000 Oklahoma spellers. At OHS Paul was second, and the Collier twins tied for third. Gary Long receives his band award from Mr. Guy Carr at Awards Night. In the background are seniors in caps and gowns. Q-WN, .29-
