Recorders and audio visual equipment aided the language courses in improvement of use of Span- ish and Latin. Latin students studied language arts, customs, beliefs, and government of the Greeks and Romans. Films and slides of Latin America and Spain, and discussions on current Latin America showed customs, government and living today. Journalism and news photography students pub- lished the Torchlight newspapers and 1960 Torch- light yearbook. Highlights in the Language Arts department in the first year of the decade are the Intramural Contests both oral and essay divisions, state con- test on Hiring the Handicapped, entry in district contest at McAlester of one-act plays, orations, and readings, publication of essays and poetry in National Anthologies and Oklahoma Anthlogy, and the junior high spelling bee. English Literature students traveled to Tulsa to attend' Shakespearean play and held an open house for Elizabethan projects. Standardized reading and vocabulary tests were given to col- lege-bound seniors and they were introduced to an accelerated reading program. Speech and dramatics are used in Enfzlish as Sonhomores present the story of Christ's birth in the Christmas assembly. Shepherds are Clinton McGonigle. Sam Thomp- son, Eddie Woodfield.
