llTrue happiness can be had only when we use our talents and knowledge to serve others? With this as his own formula, Dr. Oliver S. Willham, served Oklahoma State University for fourteen years as president. He died Septem- ber 29, 1974. Dr. Willham was named president January 17, 1952, following the plane crash death of Dr. Henry Bennett. Dur- ing his term of office, the institution was changed from Oklahoma A 8: M to Oklahoma State. OSU was admitted to the Big Eight Conference and the first atomic reactor at any Southwest institution was obtained. The Development Foundationls Faculty Council and the universityls international education programs were started. Enrollment rose from 8,000 to 15,000 and he guided OSUls expansion of physical facilities. The tallest structures on campus, two residence halls, bear his name a Willham North and South. US Senator Henry Bellmon commented on the death of Dr. Willham: llOliver Willham was truly a friend to Oklahoma higher education, but more important. he was a builder. Under his leadership Oklahoma State University became an outstanding center of education and research. He made its influence felt in communities throughout Oklahoma and other nations as well. His friendly, open personality will long be remembered along with the many accomplishments of his full and useful career?
