' SPECIAL REPORT OSU l974-75 The President of the United States came to Oklahoma State for spring gradu- ation. He was greeted by a packed sta- dium of admirers. Only a few students protested his appearance. This conserva- tive campus was one of President Nixon,s final hours of glory. The respectful crowd cheered continually and boostedhhis morale in his Watergate battle. However, Richard M. Nixon resigned his office a few months later.

David Boren trigho, a college professor from Oklahoma Baptist University and a state repre- sentative, rode into the state executive mansion with a landslide victory over Republican oppo- nent James Inhofe. The victory over Inhofe tupper righO was anticlimactic to Boren,s sur- prising upset of incumbent Governor David Hall Oower righo and Congressman Clem McSpadden Gower far righo in the democratic primary. With a broom symbolizing his desire to clean up the state house, Boren,s campaign gained momentum as Governor Hall faced indictments over alleged bribes and McSpadden was tied to hold guardtt politics. Boren was unknown to a majority of Oklahoma voters, but with a reformist image, he plunged into the limelight. Inhofe and Boren had similar platforms but Boren capitalized on Oklahomats heavily Democratic registration and the momentum from his primary upsets.
